Chapter 53 Do My Best
âTroy, what are you doing?â
The sky had turned dark, and Layla spoke up, âWaiting here wonât help. Imogen still has a wound on her head. Why donât you go back with her? Leo will call you when your grandfather comes out of the operating room.â
âNo.â Imogen immediately refused, holding onto Laylaâs arm. âGrandma, Iâm not going back. I want to wait here with you.â
Regardless of what would happen to Henry, she wanted to be the first one to see him.
âGrandma, weâll stay here with you,â Troy added.
Seeing their determination, Layla didnât object further.
After another two hours, the red light outside the operating room finally turned green.
Imogen, Troy, Leo, and Layla all stood up and gathered at the door of the operating room, waiting for the doctors to come out.
The doors of the operating room opened.
âMr. Brooks, how is my grandfather?â Troy asked immediately.
His voice was hoarse and trembled slightly, betraying his efforts to remain composed.
With tearful eyes, Imogen stared at Willard, her hands pressed together over her heart, praying.
Willard removed his mask. âThe surgery was successful. Heâll be observed in the ICU for two days. If everything goes well, heâll be moved to a regular room.â
Imogen finally smiled. Tears streamed down her face as the weight that had been hanging over her heart lifted.
âThank you, Mr. Brooks.â
Next, Henry was wheeled into the ICU.
Imogen looked at Henry, and his eyes closed, his face pale and lifeless. It hurt her so much to see him in this state.
Just a few days ago, he was playing chess with her, lively and full of smiles. And now, in just a few days, he had become seriously ill.
Imogen and the others followed Henry to the ICU.
The doctor reminded them, âThe patient needs rest right now. Please be patient and donât make loud noises.â
âThank you, doctor,â Layla said.
âNo problem. If you need anything, just let us know. Iâll give you some space.â
After the doctor left, Layla said, âNow that your grandfather is fine, you can relax. Youâve been waiting here for so long. Why donât you go home and have some rest?â
âGrandma, youâve also been waiting here for so long. You should have some rest. You donât want to get sick while Grandpa is recovering.â
âImogen is right, Grandma. How about I take you back to rest? It might take some time for Grandpa to wake up. You should take care of yourself and come back to see him when heâs awake,â Troy suggested.
âThatâs right, Grandma. Grandpa hasnât woken up yet. Weâll stay with him and go to your place to

pick you up when he does,â Leo added.
âOkay, then.â
âWell then, Iâll take you back, Grandma. Troy, you and Imogen stay here with Grandpa. Iâll come back as soon as I drop Grandma off.â
âNo problem, Leo.â
Inside the ward, only Imogen and Troy remained, surrounded by silence.
âItâs been a while, and you havenât had dinner. Iâll ask someone to deliver something to eat for us.â Troy said.
âOkay.â
Troy strode out of the award.
He first went to Willardâs office.
Willard was getting on in years, and after several hours of surgery, he looked tired. He was resting in his office when Troy knocked.
âCome in.â
Willard rubbed his temples. âTroy, itâs you. Do you need something?â
âMr. Brooks, I want to ask about my grandfatherâs condition. You can be frank with me. I came alone, so you donât need to hide anything.â
Willard sat up, and his expression serious. âTo be honest, Henryâs body suffered a lot when he was younger, and as he got older, even with the best care, his condition didnât get any better. And heâs been taking immuneâsuppressing drugs for years, so his body canât handle it anymore. Though the surgery was successful this time, the situation is still not compromising.â
âHow much time does he have?â
Willard lifted his gaze to Troy and held up three fingers. âI can only give him about three months. Beyond that, itâs up to fate.â
Troyâs body shook as if struck by a heavy hammer, the ache spreading through his organs.
Three months.
Grandpa only had three months left.
Troy hoped that this was a joke, but he knew it wasnât.
But if even Willard, the top expert in the field, was helplessâ¦
âTroy, I know you canât accept this. But your grandfather is aware of his condition. Heâs been prepared for a long time. Heâs just most worried about you. Iâve also seen the news lately. Are you really going through a divorce with your wife?â
Willard came forward, patting Troyâs shoulder. âAfter all, sheâs someone youâre meant to spend your life with. If things really canât go on, even I canât stop you from separating. But your grandfather only has this little time left. Canât we let him leave this world peacefully?â Troyâs eyes reddened, and he swallowed hard. âI understand, Mr. Brooks. Thank you.â Troy left with a heavy heart.
He found a secluded place and slumped down, as motionless as a stone statue.
âMrs. Marshall, Mr. Marshall sent me to bring you some food.â
The driver walked in carrying a lunchbox and helped Imogen unpack it.
Imogen asked. âWhereâs Troy?â
âIâm not sure. But Mr. Marshall didnât take the car, so heâs probably still at the hospitalâ Images nodded.
She believed that Troy was feeling equally frustrated about his grandfatherâs condition. At this moment, he was likely finding a quiet place to gather his thoughts.
Imogen didnât have much appetite but thought about the baby in her womb Still, she managed to eat a few more.
Troy returned from outside, his face appearing normal, though his eyes were dark and void of
emotion.
âTroy, you havenât eaten. Have something.â
âOkayâ Troy sat down,
threw the trash in the bi
ked up the cutlery, and had a simple meal. Then, he cleaned up and
âYour body hasnât fully recovered, and youâve been waiting here for so long. Iâm afraid itâs too much for you. You go back to the ward and have some rest. Iâll stay here tonight. If Grandpa wastes up. Iâll let you know.â
Imogen nodded. âBut donât stay up too late, Call Leto take over in the middle of the night.â
âI willâ
Troy accompanied Imogen to the door of her ward and then returned to Henryâs ward to continue
waiting
After returning to the room, nurses came for rounds to check on Imogenâs condition Once the check was done, Imogen quickly freshened up and boy down to rest
Time passed, and Imogen was abruptly awakened by an urgent knocking on her doon
She opened her eyes, rubbing them sleepily. Her vison was still blurred, and she could see that it was still dark outside the window.
âWho is it? Imogen turned on the bedside lamp and got out of bed to put on her clothes.
Troyâs voice came from outside. âImogen, Grandpa awake. He want to see you.â
âOkay. Iâm coming âImogen hurriedly dressed and opened the door âLetâs go.â
âHold onâ
âWhatâs wrong?â Imogen paused.
Troy walked up to her and, under her gaze, began inbuttoning and then rebuttoning her clothes. âYou buttoned up wrongâ
One wrong button would lead to all the rest being wrong
âOh, I didnât notice. What time is it?â
âTen past two in the morning
