Chapter 9

VI

The Craziest Of Them All

I am still in the backseat of the slick Lexus car, but instead of staring at the boring scenery zooming past the car's back window; I am happily munching away at my Double Quarter Pounder with extra cheese.

I take a huge bite of my burger and moan out loudly as the deliciousness of the juicy patty, creamy cheese, fresh tomatoes and lettuce and crisp bun attacks my senses in a good way.

"Do you have to do that?" Sour Jay asks, turning around in his seat to look at me inquisitively.

I don't reply back verbally, but nod my head energetically as I shove a handful of fries in my mouth.

"But do you have to do that every time you take a bite of your burger?"

I nod again before taking another big bite. This time, I moan out sexually while kicking my feet excitedly on the car's carpeted floor.

Jay rolls his eyes at my behaviour. When I start licking the delicious barbecue sauce that dripped from the burger off of my fingers, he shakes his head disgustingly at me before turning around to face the front. This nigga be acting as if he never seen a hungry girl eat before. At the moment I couldn't give a flying fuck about eating etiquette, I haven't eaten anything in forever and all I care about is filling my aching stomach with some of Mc Donald’s secret recipe shit. I ain't out here tryna impress nobody, especially not Jay.

As the drive continues, all that can be heard is the hum of the car’s powerful engine and me munching away happily at my meal.

"Do you have McDonalds in Africa?" Alex asks curiously, breaking the comfortable silence in the car. This nigga. That is such a common and stupid question. I can't believe that in the 21st fucking century, people still have the same ignorant view of Africa as some dark continent where naked people are running around with lions as pets. Dumb fucks.

I swallow the last of my food in my mouth before answering him. "Well, Lex." I start off, completely ignoring the fact that he asked me explicitly not to call him that. "I can't speak for the whole of Africa, but back home in South Africa there is a McDonalds at like every corner." I answer truthfully, slurping my Sprite.

"Then why do you act as if you've never eaten a burger before?"

I pause from loudly sipping on my drink to shoot Alex a small glare. "I do not eat as if I've never eaten a burger before." I defend myself, "I just make sure people know how much I'm enjoying my food."

"Okay, chill." Alex exasperates.

I take the empty burger box and chip box and shove them into the paper bag they came in and also dust off any crumbs that may have fallen onto my lap. I place the bag on the floor and sit comfortably in my seat before drinking away the last of my Sprite.

“So, like, do you guys have like internet or tv’s in Africa?” Jay inquires curiously. My mouth falls slack at the shit question coming out of his mouth. You see, this is the fucking shit I’m talking about. It's because of motherfuckers like Jay that people think us Africans are an uneducated primal society.

“Really Jay?” I ask with my eyebrows raised, “Are you seriously asking me a dumbass question? Imma ignore you right now” I say before looking out the car window.

“So you from South Africa?” Alex asks inquisitively also effectively changing the topic, while sparing me a quick glance through the rear view mirror.

Sitting up from my slouched position, I squeeze myself between Jay and Alex. “Yes, why are you asking?” I question while looking at the side of Alex’s face. “Are you tryna be my boyfriend?”

“What!?” Alex scrunches his face and quickly glares at me, before putting his eyes on the road again. “Where did you get that from me asking where you’re from?”

“So you are tryna be my boyfriend” I say with both my eyebrows lifted and a teasing smile painted across my face.

“No, I’m not!” Alex practically shouts. Both me and Jay laugh at Alex’s expense, the poor man looks so uncomfortable and has a red tint across his cheeks.

“Oh look, little Alex is blushing” Jay taunts in a cooing voice that you would use with babies. I laugh harder at that. Who knew Jay could crack a joke or two.

“Both of you shut up!” Alex says in the same frustrated voice, but with a twinge of embarrassment mixed into his voice. Jay just continues to laugh at his friend.

Waiting for Jay’s laughter to die down, I speak up again. “Well it is good that you’re not tryna be my boyfriend because it would mean that Michael has to beat you up.” I say while looking at the string of cars ahead of us. “And I would hate to see that because I actually like you Alex.” I say while offering him a small smile. Turning my head and looking at Jay, I say, “You on the other hand, I would jump for joy if he knocked you senseless”

Looking at me with a look of disgust, he quickly replies to my comment, “I wanna see the nigga that’s gonna try lay his hands on me.” He says cockily.”Besides, who is Michael, is he your boyfriend or something?”

“He’s sort of my boyfriend, and he would knock your ass out.” I say with confidence lacing my voice.

Ignoring my second comment, Jay quickly replies “What do you mean he is sort of your boyfriend, how can someone sorta be with a person?”

“Well Mr Need-To-Know-All” I say with sarcassim dripping off my voice “He kinda doesn’t know me yet.” I say in a small voice.

“How can he be your boyfriend and not know you?” Alex enters the conversation.

“I said yet, he doesn’t know me yet” I emphasise the ‘yet’ “Its part of why I came to America”

“So you’re telling me” Jay began, “That you came to America to make a boy who doesn't know you yet … your boyfriend?”

“Yep” I say popping the ‘p’, “ That was my plan to the tee, until y’all fuckers came up and ruined it all” I say with an exaggerated roll of my eyes.

“You are one crazy bitch.” Jay mutters under his breath, while looking at me in shock and ... awe?

Leaning back into the seat, I cross my right leg over my left and look Jay dead in the eye.

“You don’t even know the half”

After our little conversation the car went back into a silence, but this time around it was a comfortable one. An hour or two passed and at the end of our boring and very long ride, the car turns into a parking lot of what seems to look like a block of rundown apartments.

Alex parks the car next to an old and rusted, blue Chevron. As soon as the engine stops, Alex and Jay both step out of the car and close their respectful doors behind them. Taking it as a signal, I too unbuckle my seatbelt and step out into the late evening.

Once outside, I notice that like the Chevron next to us, all the other cars in the lots are old and rusted or look like they're about to fall apart. This being said, it makes the shiny Black Lexus that we rocked up in sticks out like a sore thumb.

The sound of footsteps in the distance make me realise that I am a few paces behind the boys, and that if I don't catch up now I will be left behind.

I jog the short distance to catch up with the men just in time as they are about to pull the glass door open to enter. Alex swings the door open and steps into the building. Jay follows in swiftly behind him, and just as I'm about to enter as well Jay slams the door behind him. Effectively stopping me from entering. Unfortunately for me, my brain doesn't register that the door is closed and I walk smack dab into the door!

A cry of pain ripples through me as my head snaps back its contact with the hard glass door. My hand flies to my nose to try and relieve the pain, tears stinging the corners of my eyes.

I watch through the glass and my teary eyes as Jay busts out laughing, and the fucker even goes as far as clutching his stomach before throwing his head back to laugh even louder.

Out of anger I shove the door open and stalk over to Jay, where he is still laughing his head off. I stop in front of him and make a show of stomping on his right foot as hard as I can.

Weirdly, my actions don't make Jay stop laughing. Instead of keeping quiet he wheezes out as he gulps for some air. It's as if my trampling on his foot was nothing but a little tickle to him.

If I wasn't so pissed at him right now, I would probably take a second to admire how beautiful this annoying specimen is. His face contorts gorgeously when he laughs and his perfect pearly whites can be seen through his delectable lips.

Before I can get carried away, and to stare at him like a creep, I turn to look at Alex.

"Can we go." I huff at him.

Heading my command, Alex turns and leads the way to our destination. I follow behind him, eyeing the dodgy interior of the building.

Funny looking stains are smeared on the walls, these stains bare a  striking and unsettling resemblance to shit. Deciding to be safe, I start holding my breath to not smell anything I don't want to smell.

The light fixture on the ceiling is swinging dangerously about and flickering like crazy. The flickering makes it seem as if we are walking through the hallway of some haunted hotel or something.

The dirty tiles under my Air Force look like they haven't been cleaned in years. They probably were white once upon a time, but they are now a revolting brown with rubbish littered all over.

Shouts and screams can be heard from the apartment next to the staircase. A loud bang resounds from the apartment, I jump in fear at the sudden sound.

I look at Alex and Jay and see that they are unfazed by everything, as if they are used to it all. Before we can even continue down the passage, the door of the apartment where the bang was heard swings roughly open.

A plump women with hair that I can bet my life that no comb has ever run through, steps out with a baggy shirt with holes in it. If it weren't for the shitty broke ass building we were in, I would believe you if you told me she was wearing a Yeezy shirt. Honestly what Kanye is doing to us is daylight robbery.

“Fuck you Tom!” She screams into the apartment, “And you ain't ever gonna find somebody that gonna suck them crusty ass toes of yours, you pasty ass piece of shit!” She shouts.

From the midst of the apartment, we hear a “Fuck you too Jackie! And you were fucking enjoying these crusty ass toes this morning!” As a reply from whom I am assuming is this Tom nigga.

I straight up bust out laughing just as Jackie angrily stomps her way to the entrance. There is just something so enjoyable about watching couples fight, they’re just so funny.

Jay shakes his head in disbelief at what we all just witnessed before starting to walk again. Alex follows suit and I continue to follow Alex as he climbs up the stairs leading to the second floor. Reaching the top of the stairs we walk down the corridor and stop at one of the doors.

A bronze 17 is decorating the door and below it is a small peephole. Alex lift a fist to knock on the door three times.

There is a moment of silence before we hear shuffling noises coming towards the door.

"Who is it?" A voice asks from the other side of the door.

"It's me." Jay answers, rolling his eyes.

"Me who?" The voice asks again.

"Bitch, you know who it is!" Jay speaks back, sounding as if he is irritated.

"I’mma ask again." The person behind the door speaks in a clipped tone, "Who is it?"

Before Jay can even open his mouth to answer, Alex cuts him off to answer the dude in the apartment.

"It's Alex and Jay."

There is silence inside the apartment once more before we hear the sound of a lock clicking open. Another lock clicks open, then the rattling of a chain can be heard after another lock clicks.

When I thought it was all over, the sound of a slot sliding open can be heard, followed by the sound of two more locks.

Finally, the door swings open and ...
