âI said you should take care of your work-life balance. If there are events you donât want to attend, just have your agent decline them. Oh, and by the way, Iâm heading back to my parentsâ place this weekend. You mentioned before that you loved our chefâs special fish dish. Letâs go together!â
âNO!â Evie blurted out, her voice laced with panic. She quickly tried to compose herself.
âMadisyn, I canât go this time.â
Madisyn tilted her head, puzzled.
âWhy not? Are you worried about your schedule? I checkedâyou donât have anything planned for this weekend.â
âItâs not about work,â Evie replied hurriedly, avoiding eye contact.
âI already made plans with some friends. I canât break my promise to them.â
âAlright, if youâve got plans, you can join us next time,â Madisyn said with a kind smile. She offered a few more gentle reminders about self-care before letting Evie go.
That weekend, Madisyn and Andrew headed to the Johns Manor together. As their car approached the grand manor, Madisyn spotted Waylon standing at the entrance, gazing in their direction.
She parked the car beside him and rolled down the window.
âWaylon, why are you standing here?â she asked, her tone curious.
âI figured youâd be coming soon, so I came out to greet you.â Waylon glanced briefly at her before his gaze shifted to the back seat.
The back seat was empty. Andrew had already stepped out of the car and opened the rear door.

âWaylon, thereâs still some distance to go. Get in,â Madisyn urged.
Without a word, Waylon climbed into the car. Normally, he was lively and upbeat, but today, his demeanor was distant. He rested his chin on one hand, staring out the window as though deep in thought.
Madisyn exchanged a quick glance with Andrew, raising her eyebrows in question.
Andrew noticed the change in Waylon too but simply shook his head, indicating he had no idea what was wrong.
