Pain shot through Albertine’s wrists as tears threatened to spill. “I didn’t steal it,” she said, her voice quavering. “The owner allowed me to take it.”

Jared’s eyes narrowed to slits. “That’s impossible. The owner never lets anyone touch this kit.”

Albertine’s gaze remained fixed on the medical kit, her entire body tense with urgency.

Studying her face, Jared saw raw fear rather than greed or calculation. Something shifted in his expression. “I know the owner of this kit,” he said suddenly. “Have you seen her?”

“You know her?” Albertine’s struggles ceased as she stared at him in wonder. Yet wariness still clouded her features—trust wouldn’t come easily.

“Then tell me, who is she? What’s your relationship with her?”

As Jared observed her genuine reaction, his tone softened. “She’s a world-renowned doctor—both my boss and my friend.”

“Really?” Doubt creased Albertine’s brow.

Jared couldn’t help but marvel at her transparent nature. Thank goodness he’d been the one to intercept her today, or Madisyn’s kit might have been lost for good. He assured her, “Of course it’s true. Why else would I be here?”

“I’m looking for her.”

Though Madisyn could easily overpower the two guards outside the room, her primary concern was protecting her medical kit.

When she first heard noise at the skylight, she had thought it was Jared, but it had been Albertine instead. Now, Albertine had returned with both the medical kit and Jared in tow.

A gentle smile played across Madisyn’s lips. It touched her that Albertine, after receiving her help, would return the favor with such unwavering dedication. Such genuine sincerity was rare—Madisyn wondered if she herself would have retained such kindness had she been raised in this manor’s oppressive atmosphere.

Madisyn caught Jared and Albertine’s attention with a signal as she rose from the floor. The guards outside, still believing Madisyn unconscious, rushed to investigate a sudden noise from within. Their urgency proved their undoing as Madisyn swiftly knocked them down from behind the door.

“Alright, let’s head over to her,” Jared said to Albertine at the skylight, and they quickly went to the exit to wait for Madisyn.

Meanwhile, the sharp beep of Ailyn’s phone shattered the silence. Her expression morphed from confidence to concern as she checked the screen.
