Chapter 832
Bogus Billionaire
Seanâs brows furrowed. âYouâre saying that sheâs so fragile now that she canât get hurt at all?â
âYes. Even the tiniest of things can cause her a lot of pain,â said the psychologist.
âI get it.â
Caroline returned soon after Sean and the psychologist were done talking.
Sean bid the psychologist goodbye and took her home. When they reached Yates Manor, he excused himself by saying that he had work to do. Then, he slipped into the study to call Kirk and tell him about the check-up.
Kirkâs emotions were all over the place when he heard the news from Sean. Despite that, the worry he felt was completely replaced by the joy of knowing he could stay by Carolineâs side with his mask on.
Besides, they were in Macldo. He was familiar with the place, so he had full faith in himself that he could protect Caroline well.
âIâll head over tonight,â Kirk said.
âKirk, youâre being much too impatient,â Sean teased. Just then, he heard someone knock on the door.
âIâm hanging up. Just head over tonight. Iâll have someone clear out a room for you.â
After ending the call, he said, âCome in.â
The door swung open, and Betty walked into the room. âWhy were you in such a hurry to come to the study just now? I have something important to tell you.â
Even though the door was closed, Betty spoke in a hushed voice.
It made Sean laugh and say, âMom, thereâs no one else here.â
Betty hushed him, took out an invitation card, and gave it to him. âTake a look at this.â
Confused by her actions, Sean took the card from her and opened it.
The sender was Marietta herself, and the invitation seemed to be regarding something rather important.
However, the person she had invited wasnât anyone from the Yates family, but Caroline.
âMarietta sent someone to give this to us this afternoon,â Betty said.
âThe last time we were on the cruise ship, we had barely mentioned Mariettaâs name, but Caroline passed out because of that.
âThatâs why I didnât accept the invitation right away. I just kept it with me. Do you think I should give this to Caroline?â
âNot at all.â Sean sounded certain.
Betty agreed. âWeâre on the same page then. Iâll throw it away.â
âWhy bother?â Sean retorted.
He pointed at the trash can in a corner of the room. âThereâs a trash can right here.â
Betty swiftly tossed away the invitation card and sighed. âIâll head over to Mariettaâs and explain it to her a few days later.â
She continued, âLast time, I scolded her daughter. This time, Iâm refusing her invitation again. She might think that I have a problem with her.â
âHer daughter?â
âYes.â Betty sounded surprised.
âDonât you know that sheâs finally found her daughter?â
Betty wanted to rant to Sean about how awful Yvonne was. Sadly, though, Sean wasnât someone who liked to gossip.
âTell me about it later, Mom. I have work to do.â
Betty responded, âFine. I know you donât like listening to me rant. Iâm going to see Caroline. Sheâs a much better kid.â
Sean was torn between laughing and weeping.
Betty was already at the door when he stopped her. âOh right! Remember to make dinner for Kirk tonight.â
âIs he coming over?â
âYeah.â
Bettyâs smile widened at Seanâs answer. âItâs because of Caroline, right? Sean, when are you going to marry and bring your wife home?â
Sean wanted to tell Betty about Gwen, but he held his tongue when he remembered that there hadnât been much progress between the two of them.
He had been listening to Caroline talk about Gwen all the time for the past few days. He had even jotted Nothing could make him believe that he, a genius doctor, couldnât find a way to handle Gwen.
