Chapter 789
Bogus Billionaire
Just then, someone knocked on the door.
âExcuse me, is someone in there?â
Caroline glanced at the door and caught a glimpse of the pair of shoes under the door.
âYeah.â
âYouâre Ms. Evans, right? Your fiancé said that youâve been in here for quite some time already. He asked me to check if youâre okay,â the woman said.
âAre you okay? Do you need help?â
Caroline didnât respond. Gwen heard the womanâs voice on the phone and smiled helplessly. âYou should head back.â
âI know,â said Caroline.
âJust remember what I told you. Donât think about anything else, okay?â
âOkay,â Caroline replied, her tone meek.
After hanging up, she opened the door to see a kind-looking old lady standing by the door.
âHello.â The lady greeted Caroline with a smile.
Caroline greeted the lady out of common courtesy. She hasnât expected this to be the start of a very long conversation with the lady, who couldnât stop complimenting Eddy as she grabbed Carolineâs arm and led her out of the washroom.
âItâs my first time seeing such a young man care so much for his fiancée,â said the lady.
âYou didnât see how impatient he was when he stood by the door yet couldnât come in here just now.
âYoungsters these days are totally different now.â The lady sighed. âHow interesting.â
Caroline tossed her a smile as the lady carried on talking. âYour fiancé doesnât seem like the expressive type, right?â
Caroline raised her eyes to look at the lady, who smiled and chuckled.
âDonât look at me like that. Iâve been through more than you could ever imagine, so Iâm usually right when it comes to people.â
âYour fiancé seems like the person who would keep an eye out for you all the time despite being a man of few words.â
She then added, âYouâre lucky to have him.â
âReally?â Caroline lowered head. She disagreed with the lady.
Carolineâs gut told her that Eddy wasnât the kind of person the lady had just described. Besides, she had seen what people who gave silently were truly like.
It sounded like she was roasting the lady when that thought occurred to her. All of a sudden, the silhouette of a person flashed through her mind.
âOh my! Did I make you upset?â the lady asked when she noticed that Caroline had been quiet for some time.
âI should have held my tongue.â
TI Caroline shook her head. âNo, you didnât. Thank you for telling me all of this.â
After making sure that Caroline wasnât displeased, the lady beamed. âThank goodness! You should go out and meet your fiancé. Heâs getting anxious.â
âOkay.â Caroline nodded and left the washroom.
She saw Eddy standing by the door, waiting for her. The lady had said lots of nice things about Eddy just now.
But when Caroline saw him at this very moment, memories of the past came flowing back to her like water from a bursting dam.
She remembered the time she had prepared some broth for Eddy and how she had waited patiently for hours just so that the broth would taste better. She also remembered how he had knocked over the bowl of broth that she had even placed before him.
There were also the times when he had thrown away all the gifts she had specially prepared for him for his birthday.
Was he truly just incapable of expressing himself?
Caroline approached him, her mind bursting at its seams with questions.
âAre you okay? You were gone for quite some time,â Eddy asked in concern.
