Chapter 686
Bogus Billionaire
Many issues could have been solved if Mariettaâs biological daughter had been Caroline.
Caroline brought a blanket out from the bedroom and draped it over Marietta. She took Kirkâs hand and whispered, âLetâs turn in.â They should let Marietta rest.
Upon entering the bedroom, Kirk immediately wrapped an arm around Carolineâs waist. Sensing his intention, she quickly pressed her hands against his chest to stop him.
âDonât. Momâs still outside,â she warned.
A smirk played on his lips as he gripped her hands and said, âI wasnât planning on doing anything, though. What were you thinking, darling?â
A blush crept up Carolineâs cheeks. A moment later, she spoke, âI wonder if Yvonne will accept Marietta as her mother.â
âMárietta spent half of her life searching for her daughter. Now that sheâs finally found her daughter, she wonât be able to take it if her daughter canât return with her.â
Kirk tugged at Caroline, urging her to sit on the bed. âDonât worry about it too much. Mariettaâs no ordinary woman. She mustâve expected this, so sheâll be able to snap out of it real soon.â
âKirk,â said Caroline as she rested her head on his shoulder. âWhy do you think there are so many bad endings in this world?â
Kirk felt his heart ache at her words, and he pulled her into a tight embrace. They didnât talk for the rest of the night.
When Marietta woke up the next morning, she seemed as lively as she had always been. Caroline still sensed that Marietta hadnât fully recovered from last nightâs incident. She thought that Marietta was merely putting on this act because she didnât want them to worry.
âWhat do you plan to do today, Mom?â Caroline asked. She told Cheryl she wouldnât be going to work today and would stay home to keep Marietta company.
âNothing, I guess,â Marietta said. âThereâs no work for me to do these few days.â
âHow about we go shopping?â Caroline suggested. âYouâve been here awhile and I still havenât shown you aroundâ
âSure,â Marietta happily obliged.
After breakfast, Caroline asked Kirk to join them, and the three began their journey. Naturally, the task of driving fell to Kirk.
âI never thought Iâd see the day when I would be riding in your car,â said Marietta in the backseat.
Kirk glanced at her through the rearview mirror and said, âIâll drive you around any day.â
Hearing his reply, Marietta pursed her lips to stifle a smile.
Caroline noticed this and laughed. âKirkâs serious, you know? He resigned, so he has plenty of time to spare nowadays. Just call him if you want to head outside.â
âYou resigned?â Shock washed over Mariettaâs face. She wondered why she knew nothing of the change of ownership in the SY Group.
âThatâs right.â Kirk didnât feel like explaining himself, so he said, âDarling, help me turn on the navigation.â
âOkay,â said Caroline. She leaned in closer to him to help set the application up.
Their intimate actions put a smile on Mariettaâs face. She felt comforted at the sight of them. It was as though Caroline and Kirk had the ability to soothe her when she was feeling down.
Warmth and tranquility filled the air in the car. Unbeknownst to them, a huge commotion had started on various social media platforms.
Just a couple of days ago, everyone was talking about how Eddy had helped Layla take over the Collins Group. She had helped restore the Evans family back to their glorious days.
Since then, the tables have turned. Some people claimed that they saw Eddy heading to Evans Group.
Others said that Layla was arrested by the cops..
As there wasnât a single picture to prove these claims, it was all chalked up to hearsay.
Eventually, Caroline and Laylaâs supporters argued with one another. It created such a stir. As a result, even the entertainment gossip columns in the papers werenât selling as well.
After all, the discourse revolved around the Collins Group takeover. Many people were keen to see who would emerge victorious.
