Chapter 585
Bogus Billionaire
Caroline sat up on the bed. She was simply too happy for Marietta. âThatâs wonderful! Where is she?â
âI havenât found her yet.â Marietta sounded a little down.
âI only know that a couple from Easton adopted her and that theyâre from Osbury. Iâve discussed it with my assistant, and Iâll be flying there tonight.â
Caroline checked the time. It should be nightâtime on Mariettaâs side now.
âWhen will your flight land? I can pick you up.â
âYou donât have to,â replied Marietta.
âIâll thank you properly once I manage to find my daughter.â
Caroline smiled. âOkay. Iâll be waiting for good news.â
âThatâs all, I guess. I have to make preparations for something else.â
âOkay.â Caroline ended the call just in time to see Kirk enter the room with a glass of water.
She could sense the jealousy in his voice when he spoke. âWho called you? Why are you so happy?
âIt was Marietta.â Caroline laughed.
âWhat is it? Are you jealous of a woman?â
Kirk froze. He had assumed that Eddy had called her.
âWhy is she calling you at this hour?â he asked.
A smile spread across Carolineâs face. âShe said that she had gotten some news about her daughter, who had been abducted years ago.
âIt turns out that a couple from Easton had adopted her daughter, so Mariettaâs coming here to find out more.â
Seeing the frown on Kirkâs face, Caroline asked, âWhatâs wrong? Arenât you happy for her?â
Her question snapped Kirk out of his daze. âIâm happy for her, of course.â
It was just that Marietta knew him Back then, she handed the script for âDaughter of the Seaâ over to Collins Group because of him Things would be fine if she managed to find her daughter soon after arriving in Easton. However, if it took a long time, she would certainly contact Caroline frequently. By thenâ¦
Turning around, Kirk inconspicuously pressed a hand against his forehead when Caroline was focused on downing the glass of water.
How had things become so complicated?
This just wouldnât do. He had to settle the issue of his identity as soon as possible.
He turned to look at Caroline, who was taking sip after sip from the glass. He couldnât help but find her simply adorable.
However, the longer he stared at her, the more he panicked. âDarling, can I ask you something?â
Now that Caroline had finished her glass of water, she wasnât as parched as before and had regained some strength. âWhat is it?â
âIf Eddy isnât Eddy ⦠I mean, if he hadnât been a part of the Morrison family â¦â
Now, it was Carolineâs turn to stare at him.
This was the first time she had seen Kirk fumbling for words. She found it so amusing that she couldnât stop herself from laughing.
âDo you even realize how funny you sound right now?â
Kirk glanced up at the ceiling for a couple of seconds and laughed.
âLet me rephrase it. Imagine that what happened between you and Eddy was still the same. If I didnât exist or hadnât appeared, and we hadnât gotten marriedâ¦â
Caroline knitted her eyebrows together, but Kirk had no clue as to why she was frowning.
He continued, âBut someone from the Morrison family appeared. He loves you a lot, and you love him too. Would you be with him?â
âNo!â
Carolineâs curt reply made his heart drop.
She then added, âBecause no matter what happens, and even if you hadnât appeared, I still want to be with you.â
Kirk smiled wryly at her words. He cupped her cheeks and said, âBut what if I hadnât shown up?â
