Caroline looked at Kirk, not saying a word.

Kirk clenched his fists and held his breath. He felt as if his heart was falling apart from the stress.

She looked at Kirk with dull eyes. “Do you really think I would fall for that?”

Kirk stopped Caroline before she could turn around. “I know you don’t believe me.”

He took out his phone and handed it to Caroline. “You once attended his press conference, so you should still remember his voice. Even if you don’t believe me, you should believe him, right?”

Caroline looked at Kirk’s phone hesitantly. She still remembered Eddy’s second uncle’s voice like it was yesterday because it was distinctive.

But wait. Why was she indulging Kirk again?

“Darling…” Kirk saw Caroline not taking his phone, and sweat appeared on the tip of his nose.

He looked at Caroline hopefully. “It’s just a phone call, right? You have nothing to lose.”

His logic convinced her. She took the phone, and she dialed Eddy’s second uncle’s number after a moment’s hesitation.

The call was quickly connected, and she could hear his voice. It was calm and assertive, like the voice she had heard at the press conference.

“You must be Caroline.”

Caroline looked at Kirk in confusion. Kirk returned her gaze with a smile.

Holding the phone, Caroline said with her back to Kirk, “Are you Eddy’s second uncle?”

“Yes, I am. I heard about what happened between you and Kirk. I’m really sorry. My personal affairs almost ruined your marriage. I feel extremely guilty.”

Caroline frowned. The voice on the phone really belonged to Eddy’s second uncle! How could that be?

She turned around and looked at Kirk. Had Kirk been telling the truth the entire time?

“Haha, I came up with this evil plan because I didn’t want my uncle to nag me about marriage. I didn’t expect my plan to end up troubling other people.

“How about this? When I have the time, I’ll visit you in person one day, okay?”

Caroline opened her mouth hesitantly. She still couldn’t believe Kirk’s words.

“S–sir, I still find this entire situation ridiculous. Why did you let Kirk register the marriage on your behalf? Was it really because you both have the same surname?”

“Yes.” Eddy’s second uncle chuckled on the phone.

“The best way to make a believable fake wedding certificate is to use the real thing.

“I asked Kirk to register the marriage on my behalf because I didn’t want Daphne to take away half of my property. I hope you can understand.”

Caroline was silent. After a while, she asked again, “Then why didn’t he tell me this?”

“He must have shown you the non–disclosure agreement. In fact, I was being unkind by coming up with this plan.

“I knew Kirk wouldn’t agree to my request to legally register himself and Daphne as spouses. So I talked about this with his father.

“He only found out about this after returning to Easton. We had already signed a non–disclosure agreement then, so he couldn’t tell you the truth.”

Caroline looked back at Kirk with a complicated expression.

Eddy’s second uncle continued apologizing, “I’m really sorry, Caroline. I didn’t expect both of you to get divorced because of me.

“All of this is my fault. Kirk really loves you. He’s even willing to pay the 200 million dollars as penalty for your sake.”

“Really?” Caroline asked nervously.

“Yes. Since he broke the contract to tell you the truth, he has to pay me a penalty of 200 million dollars.”

Caroline protested, “200 million dollars? He’s just a regular employee! He’ll need thousands of lifetimes just to pay you back!”
