Chapter 513
Bogus Billionaire
Caroline looked at Kirk, not saying a word.
Kirk clenched his fists and held his breath. He felt as if his heart was falling apart from the stress.
After a moment, Caroline finally said, âYou weaved a wonderful story, and your logic is sound, but â¦
She looked at Kirk with dull eyes. âDo you really think I would fall for that?â
Kirk stopped Caroline before she could turn around. âI know you donât believe me.â
He took out his phone and handed it to Caroline. âYou once attended his press conference, so you should still remember his voice. Even if you donât believe me, you should believe him, right?â
Caroline looked at Kirkâs phone hesitantly. She still remembered Eddyâs second uncleâs voice like it was yesterday because it was distinctive.
But wait. Why was she indulging Kirk again?
âDarlingâ¦â Kirk saw Caroline not taking his phone, and sweat appeared on the tip of his nose.
He looked at Caroline hopefully. âItâs just a phone call, right? You have nothing to lose.â
His logic convinced her. She took the phone, and she dialed Eddyâs second uncleâs number after a momentâs hesitation.
The call was quickly connected, and she could hear his voice. It was calm and assertive, like the voice she had heard at the press conference.
âYou must be Caroline.â
Caroline looked at Kirk in confusion. Kirk returned her gaze with a smile.
Holding the phone, Caroline said with her back to Kirk, âAre you Eddyâs second uncle?â
âYes, I am. I heard about what happened between you and Kirk. Iâm really sorry. My personal affairs almost ruined your marriage. I feel extremely guilty.â
Caroline frowned. The voice on the phone really belonged to Eddyâs second uncle! How could that be?
She turned around and looked at Kirk. Had Kirk been telling the truth the entire time?
âHaha, I came up with this evil plan because I didnât want my uncle to nag me about marriage. I didnât expect my plan to end up troubling other people.
âHow about this? When I have the time, Iâll visit you in person one day, okay?â
Caroline opened her mouth hesitantly. She still couldnât believe Kirkâs words.
âSâsir, I still find this entire situation ridiculous. Why did you let Kirk register the marriage on your behalf? Was it really because you both have the same surname?â
âYes.â Eddyâs second uncle chuckled on the phone.
âThe best way to make a believable fake wedding certificate is to use the real thing.
âI asked Kirk to register the marriage on my behalf because I didnât want Daphne to take away half of my property. I hope you can understand.â
Caroline was silent. After a while, she asked again, âThen why didnât he tell me this?â
âHe must have shown you the nonâdisclosure agreement. In fact, I was being unkind by coming up with this plan.
âI knew Kirk wouldnât agree to my request to legally register himself and Daphne as spouses. So I talked about this with his father.
âHe only found out about this after returning to Easton. We had already signed a nonâdisclosure agreement then, so he couldnât tell you the truth.â
Caroline looked back at Kirk with a complicated expression.
Eddyâs second uncle continued apologizing, âIâm really sorry, Caroline. I didnât expect both of you to get divorced because of me.
âAll of this is my fault. Kirk really loves you. Heâs even willing to pay the 200 million dollars as penalty for your sake.â
âReally?â Caroline asked nervously.
âYes. Since he broke the contract to tell you the truth, he has to pay me a penalty of 200 million dollars.â
Caroline protested, â200 million dollars? Heâs just a regular employee! Heâll need thousands of lifetimes just to pay you back!â
