Chapter 136
The Hidden Princess At All-Boys Alpha Academy
Chapter 0236
âJacks!â
Jackson hears his name called behind him, but he doesnât register it, or doesnât care. Instead, he
just continues to stride forward in the dark, not really knowing where heâs going, just needing to
getâ¦out. Get away. Disappear into the night, into the wilds, into⦠whatever.
Any place but that castle.
Any place but here.
âJacks! You asshole!â the voice comes again, closer this time, and Jacksonâs instincts make him pay
attention to it, his wolf turning inside him to growl at whateverâs coming. âSlow down! I know you
can hear me!â
Jackson moves on, determined, but inside him his wolf turns again, raising his nose a little, a whine
in his throat. Jackson pushes him away, but the wolf persists, pressing his snout into Jacksonâs
hand. Come on, the wolf says, listen. Itâs Jesse. We like Jesse.
Jackson is the one growling now, insisting that he doesnât like anyone, but his wolf just nuzzles
against his hand, sad, not wanting to run anymore. So Jackson sighs, and slows, and turns when
Jesseâs footsteps come near.
âWhat the hell man,â Jesse says, bending over and panting a little, âIâve been chasing you for like,
twenty minutes!â
âShould have been faster,â Jackson mutters, shrugging and looking away, shoving his hands deep
into his pockets.
âDonât be a dick,â Jesse growls. âIâm trying to be nice to you, the least you could do is let
me.â
âNice to me?â Jackson huffs, turning to glare at Jesse a little. âDo you seriously think thatâs going to
fix anything?â
âYeah, Jacks,â Jesse says, standing up straight and crossing his arms, âI think that being nice to you
is just going to make Ariel magically not have a second mate. Obviously, thatâs what I think.â
Jackson narrows his eyes. âYouâre being a jerk, Jesse,â he growls, turning to walk away again.
âJacks!â Jesse groans, and Jackson tugs his arm out of Jesseâs grasp when Jesse grabs it.â
Donât you get it!? I am being nice to you! This is what people do!â
âWhat?â Jackson asks, still walking but turning towards the slightly smaller Alpha to glare at him.
âDo what? Youâre not doing anything â youâre just bothering me ââ
âExactly!â Jesse exclaims, keeping pace with Jacksonâs long stride. âThatâs what people do! People
who care about each other! When something shitty happens, you show up, and youâre just there!â
âThat doesnât do anything,â Jackson grumbles, discontent â but honestly, nothing, really, would work
for him right now. Nothing can make this better â nothing will make this better.
Ariel â Ari â his mate. But sheâs not really his, is she? Heâd thought heâd had her, heâd thought for a
blissful couple of days that she was his. That everything was going to be okay. That for once he
hadâ¦like, a shot at this life, at this thing they call happiness.
But he never really had it, did he?
No, it was all an illusion. Because she was lying the whole time.
âJackson,â Jesse sighs, grabbing his arm again and making him stop.
Or, well, Jackson agrees to stop â because Jesseâ¦heâs not big enough to actually stop him. But
they pause anyway, on the top of a hill, darkness all around. And Jackson hangs his head as he
waits, becauseâ¦well, where is there to go, anyway?
âThis is me trying to do something, all right?â Jesse says, his voice softer now, his hand. gentle on
Jacksonâs arm. âSomething shitty happens, and even though they canât do anything about it, the
people who care about you show up. And they hang around. So, please. stop walking away from
me and let me do that for you!â
âWhy?â Jackson growls, not getting it.
To iu
be there!â Jesse exclaims, throwing out his hands. âTo show you that I care,
are, that youâre not alone! Toâ¦stop you from throwing yourself into a ditch, or whatever!â Jesse
pauses, staring at Jackson, waiting for him to respond, but Jackson just stands perfectly still, staring
at him. âOr to throw you into a ditch, if you keep being an asshole about it.â
At this, Jackson huffs a laugh.
âSo would you stop running away?â Jesse mutters, crossing his arms now, a little cold in the night
air now that heâs not running around after the big devastated Alpha. âIâm trying to⦠be here for
you.â
âFine,â Jackson says with a shrug. Thereâs a long moment of silence. âSo, what do we do
now?â
âWhatever you want,â Jesse murmurs. âWalk. Sit. Justâ¦exist, if you want to. Or you couldâ¦
talk to me about it.â
Jackson stares at Jesse like heâs insane if he thinks thatâs going to happen, and to his surprise
Jesse bursts out laughing, taking a step forward and clapping a hand on Jacksonâs shoulder.
âJacks, seriously, I need you to tell meâ¦did you grow up under a bridge or something? Why donât
you know how to let someone comfort you?â
And Jackson sighs, a long, deep breath, and just looks down at the ground.
And Jesse sighs with him, realizing thatâ¦well, that the answer is because nobody ever has
comforted him. And Jesseâs heart, like Arielâs, absolutely breaks for this guy.
âCome on, you weirdo,â Jesse murmurs, pushing on Jacksonâs shoulder warmly and turning him a
bit. âLetâs do a little walk. You donât have to say a damn word to me. Iâll justâ¦be here.â
