Chapter 56
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 56:
Hadley sensed Ericâs growing suspicion and quickly suggested, âWhat about tomorrow? Can we delay it by just one day?â
Ericâs response came as a sharp, cynical laugh.
âOne day becomes two, then three, right? Youâre just stalling. You never planned on getting the divorce done, did you?â
âIâm not trying to delay this needlessly,â Hadley protested.
Eric interjected, âWeâre not wasting any more time!â
He was clearly not interested in excuses. âWeâre doing this today. I canât keep setting aside other commitments for this. My time is valuable.â
And with that, he ended the call abruptly.
A wry smile appeared on Hadleyâs face as she held her phone tightly. How could she make it more clear to him that she wasnât hanging on? Those days were long gone. She exhaled deeply, resigning herself to the inevitable. âSo it has to be today,â she murmured.
The task would not be simple, especially not today. She felt a sharp pain in her lower abdomen, worse than usual.
Heading towards Kingsbridge Cemetery on the cityâs west side, where her grandmother lay resting, Hadley braced herself against the discomfort. The sky was a mix of clouds and weak sunshine. The cemetery was located atop a hill. Despite the persistent pain, Hadley ascended slowly, clutching a bouquet she had picked up on her way.
She finally reached her destination. Hadley was drenched in sweat from the climb, wiping it off as she knelt before her grandmotherâs grave.
Placing the bouquet gently in front of the engraved headstone, she managed a tender smile towards the image of her grandmother carved in the stone.
âGrandma, Iâve come to visit,â she murmured softly.
As she spoke, her voice broke slightly, and tears began to stream down her cheeks.
âIâm so sorry it took so long, Grandma. I havenât been here in four years. The flights back were just too costly for me.â

She had been doing somewhat better financially since meeting Colleen. Still, it had been just enough to scrape by, and returning to Srixby had seemed impossible until the Flynn family intervened financially.
Drawing a deep breath, Hadley continued, âGrandma, Iâm staying for good this time. No oneâs going to force me out again. Iâm here to stay in my city, and Iâll visit you more often. Thatâs a promise.â
Through her tears, she smiled, pulling out her wallet to reveal a photo inside. âGrandma, youâve not yet met my little one. Hereâs how adorable Joy is!â Hadley held up the photo. âYou wouldâve liked her. I know you would. Soon, Iâll make sure you both meet.â
Gently, she wiped the headstone with a towel. âGrandma, I wish I could bring more, but these flowers are all I have right now. When things get better, Iâll bring you something truly special.â
Once the stone was clean, she knelt again, whispering a silent prayer. âGrandma, please watch over us, help me to secure a good income, and keep Joy healthy,â Hadley murmured, her voice choked with emotion. âEverything will be okay,â she whispered reassuringly, both to her grandmother and herself. âYou know Iâm strong. Thereâs no need to worry about me.â
Opening her eyes, which were rimmed red but no longer teary, she murmured a goodbye. âIâll visit again soon, Grandma,â Hadley said, giving one last look at her grandmotherâs photo before turning to walk away.
