Final Flashback
One week ago, Karl perched on a table like it was his throne. It wasnât the grin that caught her attentionâit was the size of him! His legs didnât quite reach the floor. His bandaged shoulder curled slightly, still aching beneath the fabric.
For a moment, the rage and fire melted away, revealing just a kid.
Something stirred in her chest, small yet dangerous. It wasn't softness, nor forgiveness, but memory. Of being young, angry, and utterly alone.
She sat down quietly, not beside him, but close enough.
âIt seems like you followed me,â he said. The smile faded, replaced by something sourâfear sharpened into anger. Aurora understood.
âMaybe I did,â she said, setting down her tray. She took a bite, forcing it down, eyes flicking to his wounded side.
âKarlâ¦â He looked at her, guarded, no mockery. She had almost forgotten, lost in everything, that he was a kidâa reflection of her own past at the Academy, friendless and isolated.
âIâm sorry.â Her voice came out softly, but not weak.
âFor what?â he asked, eyes testing. âYou didnât do anything.â
She met his gaze steadily, understanding him better than he did. âBut you think you did.â
He didnât flinch, chewing slowly, weighing whether to flip the table or not. She let silence stretch without defense or retreat. She just gave him her presence. And slowly, to her surprise, something shifted. His shoulders eased, not much, but enough.
âDo you thinkâ¦â he started, then paused. âI shouldnât have destroyed that store?â
Aurora swallowed, wiped her lips. âI donât think you wanted to. I donât think you meant to.â
Karl stared at his food, then up at her. His voice dropped low. âAm I a bad person?â
Snowglobes shattered behind her eyesâscreams, a family scrambling from his fury. She wiped her mouth again.
âNo,â she said. âYouâre not a bad kid.â
He looked down.âYou donât know the things I did,â Karl muttered thinly. âIf you did, youâd call me a bad kid.â
Aurora shifted, voice light. âYou mean murder? Destruction? Chaos?â
Karl blinked, looking at her.
âStealing. Rioting. Burning buildings,â she continued. âKarl, Iâve already assumed youâve done all of it.â
Then, a pulse of red energy scraped at her senses. Her head snapped toward the door. Kristo entered, grabbed a tray, and sat between them without a word. He didnât look at either. Just ate. Karl watched, frowned.
âYouâre not gonna say anything?â
Kristo didnât pause. âDo you want me to?â
âI thought youâd⦠I donât know. Youâd tell me Iâm bad. Dangerous.â
âYou are,â Kristo said calmly. âSo am I.â He pointed at Aurora with his fork. âSo is she.â
That shut Karl up. Kristo sipped something steaming.
âDifference is, I know when Iâm about to explode. And I choose not to.â
Karl scoffed. âThatâs stupid.â
Kristo shrugged. âMaybe. But I havenât had to apologize during breakfast.â
Karl stared, unsure whether to laugh or bite him. Then, just barely, he smirked. Aurora smiled too, despite herself, as she watched quietly. She realized then that she didnât need to be the person Karl trusted most. At least, not in this moment. And for the time, she forgot Milo and Selus. She could breathe.

Or so she thought.
The last arrival made her catch the breath of the room as she came inâeyes landing on Karl, Aurora, then Kristo. The air cleared as she sat, one leg crossed elegantly. Her eyes sharp and amused scanned the table. Kristo didnât look up, eating steadily.
âAre you three playing family?â
Karl smirked, innocence gone, armor back on. âWouldnât you be interested?â
Aurora watched Karl puff up, slipping back into performance. Samantha smiled sharp and slow. Samanthaâs attention drifted to Kristo, amusement flickered. He hadnât looked at her. She moved closer, one hand on his shoulder, then the other. Her lips brushed his ear as she whispered something Aurora couldnât hear.
Kristo stopped chewing, set down his fork, turned slowlyânot angry, just sharp and measured. His eyes locked on hers. âDonât.â
Samantha blinked, smiled. âStill pretending I donât get to touch you?â
Kristo picked up his fork, resumed eating. Aurora knewâhe felt it. Not extreme, but violated. Samantha traced fingers along his cheek, kissed it.
Aurora tensed, about to intervene. But Kristo grabbed her shoulders, pushed her awayâfirm, precise.
Sheâd crossed a line.
Her eyes widened just a beat. Then twinkled with a too-knowing smile. She turned to Aurora, who was still chewing. âSo we meet again,â she teased.
Her smile faded. She looked Aurora up and down like a blemish on silk. âItâs amusing seeing you go after everyone out of your league.â The words could have cut, but Aurora simply swallowed, wiped her lips. Fingers interlaced, smile sharpened.
âYes, weâre playing family,â she said, leaning forward. âAnd youâre interrupting.â
Karl blinked, then laughed hard, delighted. Even Kristo looked at her mid-chew, watching. Samantha paused, then laughed tooâbut hers was too light, too sweet. Music with a serrated edge. Aurora didnât flinch, just smiled sharper.
The delight drained from Samanthaâs eyes, replaced by something darker, bare. âDonât forget,â she whispered. âI tried to warn you. About Milo. About everything.â
âSamantha, thatâs enough.â
Kristo moved fastâgrabbed her arm, pulled her back. But Samantha gaspedâa stage cue. Then used the moment. Twisting toward Kristo, she kissed him.
Aurora turned away for just a second. She didnât see the shove but heard it. Samantha stumbled back a step, breathless, magic faintly sparking at her heels.
âWell then,â she said, smoothing sleeves with practiced grace. Her gaze landed on Kristoâthen Auroraâand twirled. âYou really think he doesnât know what youâre doing?â She smiled too sweetly, but her flickering eyes said otherwise. âEveryone thinks theyâre the exception. Thatâs how he plays it.â
Aurora flipped around.
âWho?â
But she saw no one. Samantha was already gone, singing, âIâll see you again.â Karl laughed, leaving the table. Aurora and Kristo stared at each other.
â----------------------
It took Aurora and Kristo thirty seconds to see the scene had changed. The nobles, the soldiers were dead. Who had done this? And so quickly?
Neither spoke. Auroraâs breath caught. Kristo turned his face away. They didnât describe what they saw â didnât name it.
But the silence was loud. Even the shadows recoiled. And in the middle of it, shimmering with uncanny beauty was Samantha.
Miloâs army of servants, castoffs, and forgotten people now clearly had the advantage.
Her white coat was soaked through. A slow shimmer of red caught in the rising moonlight. She looked up, smiling faintly, bathed in what sheâd done.
Then she saw him.
Her posture shifted. She didnât run to him or speak. She simply turned elegantly toward Milo, like someone waiting to be seen. âI did it,â she said, breathless. âI risked everything. I killed your enemies.â
Milo said nothing. He stepped closer slowly. And then, he looked at her closely.
âI seeâ¦â His voice was quiet. âYouâ¦missed the point.â He scrutinized the brutal way she had killed everybody. âAnd worse, you made this into a showâ¦hosted in this theater.â
Samanthaâs smile faded, fingers curled at her sides.
Milo tilted his head slightly. âBut you misunderstood one thing.â He didnât look at Aurora. He didnât need to. âShe never looks at me when she chooses to kill.â He moved past the blood without stepping in it.
Every word was sharp as bone. âShe doesnât do it for me. She doesnât confuse performance with truth.â
The wind stirred the edges of her coat. âYou think youâve transcended. That youâre clean, sharpened. But perfectionââ His voice dipped. âPerfection is another kind of weakness. A mask. Just like your beauty.â
Samantha said nothing. But the gleam in her eyes faltered.
He continued. âI was wrong about you. Iâm sorry.â He left Samantha behind, blood-slick, radiant, and quietly erased.
âI suggest you donât appear before me again.â
Samantha stood in the snow. Her lips parted, like she might speak, but nothing came. One hand rose, slightly, then curled into a fist. The ash touched her lashes. She didnât blink. He didnât look back. Everything sheâd done was for him. And stillâhe walked away.
She glared at Aurora, her nose flaring. The only reason he chooses you is becauseâ¦
Her eyes were piercing.
