The sound of hurried footsteps and labored breathing echoed through the maze as Scaramouche and Heizou sprinted through its endless corridors. The dim light of their flashlights barely illuminated the shadowy walls, the oppressive darkness seeming to close in on them with every step. Behind them, the lady in white let out another eerie wail, her haunting cries growing louder as she pursued them relentlessly.
âSheâs too fast!â Heizou yelled, glancing over his shoulder as the figure closed the distance. âWe need to split up!â
âAre you insane?â Scaramouche snapped, his voice laced with irritation. âThat thing will pick us off one by one!â
âBetter than both of us getting caught!â Heizou shot back, veering to the right as they reached a fork in the maze. âIâll regroup with the othersâfind them and hold her off!â
Before Scaramouche could protest, Heizou disappeared down the right corridor, leaving him alone with the ladyâs focus entirely on him. He gritted his teeth, his flashlight shaking slightly as he turned left, his footsteps pounding against the cold floor.
The ladyâs cries grew louder, more guttural, as she closed the distance. Scaramoucheâs pulse raced, his mind frantically searching for a way to escape. The faint glow of his flashlight revealed an unending stretch of corridors ahead, each turn more indistinguishable than the last.
âDamn it,â he muttered under his breath.
The wailing grew louder, almost deafening, and he could feel her presence just behind him. He pushed himself to run faster, his legs burning with effort. The maze twisted and turned, offering no sense of direction or relief.
Just as he felt her icy breath at his back, a hand shot out from the shadows and grabbed his arm, yanking him sharply to the right. Scaramouche stumbled, nearly dropping his flashlight, before he realized it was Aether pulling him into the small alcove near the lantern from the maze's entrance.
âStay here!â Aether hissed, pushing him closer to the faintly glowing lantern. The ladyâs screeches stopped abruptly as the light from the lantern created a barrier she couldnât cross. Her form hovered at the edge of the light, her figure trembling before she let out an anguished wail and retreated into the shadows of the maze.
Scaramouche bent over, hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath. âGreat timing,â he muttered sarcastically, his usual irritation tinged with genuine relief.
Aether rolled his eyes. âYouâre welcome.â He gestured toward the door at the maze's entrance. âThe map is up there. We need to figure out how to get to the exit and regroup with the others. You have the key, right?â
Scaramouche straightened, fishing the exit key out of his pocket. âYeah, but itâs useless without the rest of the group.â He pointed at the map on the wall above the door. âLetâs figure out where we are first.â
The two moved closer to the map, their flashlights casting long shadows across the faded diagram. Scaramoucheâs sharp eyes scanned the layout, piecing together their position and the possible paths that might lead to an exit.
âHere,â he said, pointing to a section of the maze. âThis is where we are. The exit is on the opposite side, but the maze is full of dead ends. If the others are still wandering, weâll need to find them first before making a break for it.â
Aether nodded, his expression serious. âLetâs move quickly, then. The longer we stay here, the more likely sheâll come back.â
Scaramouche smirked, though his tone was dry. âWell, lead the way, hero. Iâd hate to get lost again.â
Aether shot him a withering look but didnât argue. Together, they stepped away from the safety of the lantern and back into the oppressive darkness of the maze, their flashlights cutting through the void.
The maze remained eerily silent, but both of them knew better than to let their guard down. Somewhere within the labyrinth, the others were still out thereâand so was she.
