The air was thick with tension as they continued their search through the old, creaky house. Lumine could barely focus on anything else besides the lingering thoughts of Scaramoucheâs teasing from earlier. She was trying to keep her mind on the task at hand, but his presence always had a way of creeping into her thoughts when she least expected it.
It was as if he were always there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to strike with one of his smirking remarks or playful gestures. But it wasnât just playful. No, Scaramoucheâs actions had a deeper, more provocative undercurrent to them.
As they ventured further down the hallway, Lumine could hear his footsteps behind her. She hoped he would keep his distance for once, but no such luck. She felt a sudden pressure on her shoulder, a gentle nudge that made her stop dead in her tracks.
"Careful, Lumine," Scaramoucheâs voice came low and teasing. "Donât want you to trip and fall... again."
She turned around, irritated by the fact that he was once again too close. "Scaramouche, stop it."
His eyes glinted with amusement, but his tone remained soft. "What? Can't a guy show concern for his friend?"
"You're not concerned," she shot back, narrowing her eyes at him. "You're just trying to get under my skin."
He took a step closer, his smirk growing ever so slightly. "Maybe," he admitted, "but you make it so much fun."
Before Lumine could respond, a loud crash echoed from another room, making everyone jump. Scaramouche didnât even flinch. Instead, he leaned in slightly, his lips near her ear.
"Now, see? If you'd just stay closer to me, you wouldn't have to deal with all these scary noises." His breath sent a shiver down her spine, and she quickly took a step back.
"Scaramouche, youâre impossible," Lumine said with a sigh, trying to brush off the heat that had risen to her cheeks.
He chuckled, his eyes locking onto hers. "You know, for someone so tough on the outside, youâre awfully easy to fluster."
Lumineâs frustration was mounting, but she refused to let him see how affected she was. "Iâm not flustered. You're just... annoying."
Scaramouche raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. "Mmm, sure youâre not. Itâs okay, Lumine. I like making you squirm. Youâre cute when you're flustered."
She quickly turned away, unwilling to show him that she was, in fact, very much flustered. She didn't want to give him the satisfaction of knowing how much his words affected her.
But Scaramouche wasnât done. As they continued walking, he stayed close, his presence always looming just behind her. Every so often, heâd make a subtle comment or brush against her shoulder on purpose. Each time, Lumine felt her heart skip a beat, but she refused to acknowledge it. She couldnât let him win. Not like this.
Just when she thought she might lose her patience, they stumbled upon a large, darkened room. The only light came from their lanterns, casting eerie shadows across the walls. The room seemed to stretch out endlessly, filled with old, dusty furniture that had long since been abandoned.
"Well, well," Scaramouche said, his voice smooth and low, "looks like weâre alone."
Lumine shot him a warning glance. "Scaramouche, donât you dareâ"
But it was already too late. Before she could even finish her sentence, he had slipped behind her, his hand brushing lightly against her waist as he leaned in, his voice now a hushed whisper in her ear.
"Donât worry, Lumine. Iâll make sure youâre not alone for too long."
She froze, her breath catching in her throat. "What do you mean by that?"
He stepped back slightly, but not enough to give her any space. His smirk was the only thing she could focus on as he tilted his head. "Oh, I think you know exactly what I mean. After all, itâs so easy to forget everything else when you're close to someone like me."
Lumineâs heart raced in her chest. The way he spoke, the way he moved, made her feel as if she were being pulled into a trap of his making. She wanted to push him away, but at the same time... she couldnât deny the strange effect he had on her.
But no. She couldnât let him win.
She took a step back, trying to regain her composure. "Stop it, Scaramouche. Youâre not going to get to me."
His eyes glinted with amusement, clearly enjoying the game they were playing. "Weâll see about that."
Before she could respond, there was another crash from deeper in the house, followed by the sound of footsteps. They both turned toward the noise, the brief moment of tension between them broken.
"Letâs just keep moving," Lumine said, her voice steadier now. She wasnât going to let Scaramouche get to her. Not this time.
As they continued forward, Scaramouche hung back for a moment, watching her with an almost predatory look in his eyes. He was enjoying this more than he should have. There was something about making her flustered, making her feel uncertain, that brought him a twisted kind of satisfaction.
Lumine didnât know it yet, but Scaramouche was playing a dangerous game. And he wasnât ready to let it go just yet.
But for now, they had more pressing matters to deal with. The house was full of secrets, and they still had no idea what lay ahead.
And Scaramouche, as always, was ready to stir the pot a little more, just to keep things interesting.
