Chapter 55: Dirty Mind

The house was eerily quiet as the group continued to explore the labyrinth of corridors, their footsteps echoing against the creaky wooden floors. Lumine held the key tightly, its weight still fresh in her hand. The others were spread out, quietly searching the surrounding rooms. It had been a long, exhausting journey, and the air felt thick with unease.

But despite the tension, Scaramouche’s usual playful smirk hadn’t left his face. As always, he seemed to find humor even in the most uncomfortable situations.

Lumine found herself walking alongside him as they rounded a corner, trying to focus on the task at hand. But there was something about Scaramouche’s mischievous grin that always seemed to make her heart race a little faster.

"You know," Scaramouche began, his voice low, as though he were sharing a secret, "I think this place could use a little... spice."

Lumine raised an eyebrow, unsure of where this was going. "What do you mean?"

He gave her a sideways glance, the smirk on his face only growing wider. "Oh, nothing. Just thinking it would be nice if there were a little... romance to lighten the mood."

Her eyes widened. "Romance? Here?" She glanced around, half-expecting someone else to overhear them.

Scaramouche’s expression darkened slightly, a playful glint dancing in his eyes. "You know, the kind of romance where you just forget about all the creepy things around you... and focus on what’s in front of you."

Lumine felt her heart skip a beat. She quickly averted her gaze, trying to ignore the sudden heat in her cheeks. "Scaramouche..." She was about to protest, but before she could continue, he leaned in a little closer, his voice dropping to a hushed whisper.

"You’ve got such an innocent look on your face, Lumine," he teased. "You know, a little bit of fun never hurt anyone." He was so close now she could feel the warmth of his breath on her skin. She couldn’t help but shiver, though it wasn’t entirely from the cold air.

She quickly took a step back, clearing her throat. "W-we have to focus on finding the others," she said, trying to regain control of the situation. "Let’s not get distracted."

Scaramouche chuckled darkly, unfazed by her attempt to distance herself. "Ah, yes. The ever-dutiful Lumine. But I wasn’t really talking about ‘finding’ anyone... I was just thinking of... a different kind of adventure."

Lumine opened her mouth to respond, but her thoughts scrambled. She didn’t know if she should be angry, embarrassed, or... something else entirely. Scaramouche was unpredictable, always pushing boundaries, and it made it hard to know what to make of his teasing.

"Well, whatever your idea of an ‘adventure’ is," she finally managed to say, "I’m not interested."

Scaramouche’s smirk faltered for a moment, but then it was back, stronger than ever. "Oh, don’t worry. I’ll take you out of your comfort zone eventually," he said, his voice playful yet somehow threatening. "And when I do, you’ll thank me."

Lumine didn’t respond, but her heart was racing again—whether from anger or something else, she wasn’t sure. She quickly turned her attention back to the group, her steps a little faster now as she moved away from Scaramouche. She didn’t know what to make of him anymore. He was trouble, but there was something magnetic about him that she couldn’t shake.

They reached another hallway, and Scaramouche took his place beside her once again, his mischievous smile never faltering. But this time, Lumine kept her distance, silently hoping he would leave her be.

But as they continued, she couldn’t help but wonder what he meant by "adventure." The thought lingered in her mind, though she quickly pushed it away. The last thing she needed was to start thinking about that.

"Focus, Lumine," she muttered under her breath, shaking her head. "You’ve got to stay focused."

But deep down, she knew it wouldn’t be that easy. Scaramouche had a way of making everything else seem... secondary.

And she wasn’t sure how much longer she could resist his pull.

Meanwhile, Aether and the others continued their search, unaware of the tension brewing between Lumine and Scaramouche. They were all just trying to make sense of the house, trying to find any clues that would lead them out. But the deeper they went, the stranger everything became.

They had a long way to go before they could escape, and Lumine knew that the challenges ahead would only get more difficult.

But something told her that Scaramouche’s games would be the least of her worries.
