Chapter 5: Reunited, for Now

Lumine’s heart pounded in her chest as she stumbled through the maze, her breathing quick and erratic. The wailing of the lady had faded into the distance, but the oppressive silence of the labyrinth weighed heavily on her. She could still feel the cold sweat trickling down her back, the lingering fear from being separated from the others gnawing at her. Her mind raced, desperately trying to figure out where to go next.

The walls seemed to close in around her, the flickering light from her flashlight casting eerie shadows that danced and shifted in the corners of her vision. The place felt alive in a way that made her skin crawl. She knew she had to find the others, but the labyrinth seemed endless, twisting in on itself.

As she rounded another corner, she collided with something—or rather, someone—causing them both to stumble back with a startled cry.

“Oof!” Hu Tao gasped, almost falling over but managing to catch herself. “Watch where you’re going!”

Lumine blinked in surprise as she took in the sight of Hu Tao, the only one of their group who seemed unaffected by the chaos around them. "Hu Tao!" Lumine exclaimed, relief flooding through her. "I’m so glad to see you."

Hu Tao sighed dramatically, her shoulders slumping in exaggerated exhaustion. “I’m glad to see you too, Lumine. I was starting to think I’d never find anyone in this creepy place.” She waved her hand as if the whole situation was nothing more than an inconvenience. “Honestly, though, I lost Furina and Aether. They’re probably running around here somewhere, getting themselves into trouble.”

Lumine blinked in surprise. “You lost them? But… didn’t they follow you?”

“Well, they tried,” Hu Tao said with a grin, clearly amused by the whole situation. “But Furina? She’s a handful. She ran off in the opposite direction once I wasn’t looking. And Aether… well, he was way too caught up in trying to keep up with her. I think he’s still running in circles.”

Lumine’s shoulders relaxed a little, grateful to know at least someone was still somewhat in control of the situation. But even so, her nerves remained on edge. “Have you seen Scaramouche or Heizou?”

Hu Tao shrugged, unbothered. “No sign of them. They could be anywhere in this maze. This place is a nightmare.”

Lumine’s heart sank at the thought of losing Scaramouche, even if their relationship had been volatile. The thought of being stuck here alone with nothing but this haunting maze and the chilling presence of the lady in the white dress was enough to make her stomach churn.

"Do you think we'll ever get out of here?" Lumine asked quietly, her voice tinged with uncertainty.

Hu Tao tilted her head, her playful demeanor never quite fading. "Well, if we keep running into creepy ghosts and dead bodies, I’m going to guess we’re not getting out anytime soon," she said matter-of-factly. “But we’ll figure it out. It’s all part of the fun, right?”

Lumine could feel her tension starting to ease, if only a little. Hu Tao’s ability to remain upbeat in the face of terror was almost contagious, though Lumine wasn’t sure if it was the best way to approach this nightmare.

"Alright," Lumine said, straightening up. "So, we should keep moving. We can’t afford to stay in one place for too long."

“Exactly!” Hu Tao said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Lead the way, Lumine. Maybe we'll find some more of those fun traps the ghost lady left for us.”

They both shared a moment of silent understanding before Lumine turned and started walking down the corridor. Hu Tao followed close behind, her steps light and quick as she hummed a tune under her breath. The maze seemed to stretch on endlessly, but Lumine felt a small sense of comfort knowing she wasn't alone.

The eerie quiet of the building surrounded them again, but now it felt less oppressive, the sense of isolation broken by Hu Tao’s presence. Still, there was the lingering feeling that something—someone—was watching them from the darkness.

As they ventured deeper into the labyrinth, Lumine’s thoughts kept returning to the others. She couldn’t help but wonder where Heizou and Scaramouche had gone, whether they were okay. The constant noise of her own heartbeat filled her ears as she pressed forward, hoping they would find their way back to one another before it was too late.

But the path ahead was shrouded in darkness, and Lumine knew this wasn’t going to be an easy escape.
