As the group emerged from the darkness, they found themselves standing on the edge of a vast lake. The water shimmered under the dim glow of floating lanterns, their soft light casting long, eerie shadows across the rippling surface. A large, weathered sign stood nearby, etched with an ominous warning:
"When the spirits align, offer a blade to continue your path. The lights will hide you 50 percent of the time."
"Fifty percent? What kind of gamble is that?" Scaramouche muttered, crossing his arms.
"Itâs better than nothing," Heizou replied, his sharp eyes scanning the lanterns.
Hu Tao raised her lantern, squinting toward the distance. "Look, thereâs someone by one of the lanterns!"
---
As they moved cautiously toward the floating lights, they froze when they saw a shadowy figure trembling inside the protective glow of one lantern. The demon appeared from the mist, its grotesque, towering form moving unnaturally fast.
âTo the LANTERN, NOW!â Furina screamed, her voice cracking as they all sprinted toward the nearest light.
The demon paused momentarily, its hideous face scanning them, but its attention soon shifted to the lone figure in the lantern. The group watched in horror as the demon lunged at the person, its massive claws dragging him into the depths of the lake. His screams were drowned out by the waterâs unrelenting pull.
Aether clenched his fists. "We have to move. Now."
---
The group continued through the maze of lanterns, hearts pounding as the demonâs distant growls echoed behind them. Furina and Heizou spotted a small wooden house along the edge of the lake, its faintly glowing interior offering a glimmer of hope.
"In there!" Furina called out, rushing toward the house.
Inside, they found an altar holding an ancient blade, its hilt wrapped in faded red cloth.
"This must be it," Heizou said, lifting the blade carefully. "The one mentioned in the warning."
"We can rest here for a bit," Aether suggested, his voice steady but strained. "But not too long. That thing is still out there."
---
After a brief rest, the group ventured back out, sticking close to the floating lanterns. The air grew colder as they neared a fast-moving river, its banks lined with jagged rocks. Across the river stood a cavern with a sealed door glowing faintly.
"Thatâs our way out," Lumine said, her voice firm despite the unease creeping into her chest.
"We have to jump," Scaramouche said, already stepping toward the riverâs edge.
"Are you crazy?" Hu Tao exclaimed. "That current will pull us under!"
"We donât have a choice," Aether said. "Itâs either this or wait for that thing to catch up."
One by one, they leaped into the river, carefully maneuvering through the strong current. Lumine slipped but was quickly grabbed by Scaramouche, who steadied her.
"You really need to stop getting yourself into these situations," he said with a smirk, though his grip on her arm was firm.
"Thanks for the advice, genius," she muttered, shaking water from her hair.
They reached the other side, panting and soaked, but alive. Furina led the way to the cave, the blade in hand, and they pushed open the sealed door, revealing a dark, narrow passage.
"Everyone, stay close," Aether ordered as they stepped inside, their lanterns casting eerie shadows on the damp walls.
The door slammed shut behind them, leaving them in silence save for the sound of dripping water.
"Great," Scaramouche muttered. "What fresh nightmare awaits us now?"
The faint glow of spirit butterflies appeared ahead, leading them deeper into the cave as they braced themselves for whatever lay ahead.
