Chapter 45: Lost in Shadows

After the group managed to pry open the door with sheer determination and the code Lumine had deciphered earlier, they found the room empty.

"Lumine?" Aether called, stepping cautiously inside, his lantern's light scanning the dark corners.

There was no reply.

"She was just here!" Furina exclaimed, her voice rising with unease. "How could she just-vanish?"

Aether's fists clenched, his protective instincts kicking in. "We need to split up and look for her. She couldn't have gone far."

"Splitting up? Again?" Hu Tao quipped nervously. "You'd think we'd learn by now."

"Do you have a better idea?" Scaramouche snapped, though his usual sarcasm was tinged with genuine worry.

Hu Tao shrugged, her playful demeanor faltering. "Fine. Let's go."

---

Lumine blinked, disoriented, as her lantern flickered weakly. The air around her was different-colder, heavier. She was no longer in the same room. Instead, she found herself in a dimly lit corridor lined with cracked walls and faint markings. A single spirit butterfly flitted ahead of her, its glow faint but inviting.

"Where... am I?" she muttered, clutching the lantern tightly.

The sound of faint whispers filled the corridor, unintelligible yet chilling. She took a hesitant step forward, following the butterfly as it seemed to beckon her deeper into the unknown.

---

Meanwhile, the group scoured the immediate area, their voices echoing as they called for Lumine.

"Over here!" Heizou's sharp voice cut through the tension as he knelt near a faint trail of wet footprints leading into the darkness.

"They just stop," Furina said, her voice trembling slightly.

Aether's eyes narrowed as he inspected the ground. "We follow them. She has to be close."

Scaramouche glanced at the footprints, his expression unreadable. "Or we're walking right into a trap."

"Then stay behind," Aether growled.

"Not a chance," Scaramouche shot back.

---

Lumine continued through the corridor, her heart pounding as the whispers grew louder. Suddenly, a distorted figure materialized in front of her, its twisted form blocking her path.

The lantern's glow wavered as she froze in place, the figure tilting its head unnaturally.

"Why are you here?" it rasped, its voice layered with malevolent tones.

"I... I'm looking for my friends," Lumine managed to say, trying to keep her voice steady.

The figure's smile stretched unnaturally wide. "Friends? They left you... just like everyone else."

"That's not true," she shot back, her fear giving way to defiance.

The figure laughed, the sound echoing down the corridor as it dissolved into black mist. The butterfly reappeared, fluttering just ahead, and Lumine forced herself to move.

---

The group found themselves in yet another maze of doors and hallways, frustration mounting as their search yielded nothing.

"She can't just be gone," Aether muttered, his voice filled with desperation.

Scaramouche, unusually quiet, trailed slightly behind, his gaze darting to every shadow. When they entered another room, he suddenly stopped.

"What is it now?" Furina asked, annoyed.

Scaramouche pointed to the faint glow of a spirit butterfly hovering in the distance. "She's close. I know it."

Aether didn't wait for confirmation, bolting toward the butterfly's light.

---

Lumine reached the end of the corridor, where an ornate door stood slightly ajar. With a deep breath, she pushed it open, finding herself in a cavernous chamber.

At the center was a massive sakura tree, its petals glowing faintly under the dim light. Beneath the tree stood a shadowy figure, its back turned to her.

Before she could react, the butterfly guiding her flew straight into the tree and disappeared.

"Lumine!" Aether's voice echoed distantly, pulling her from her trance. She turned toward the sound but felt the temperature drop as the figure slowly turned to face her.

Its eyes were black voids, and its smile was hauntingly familiar.

"You can't escape," it whispered as the room dissolved into darkness.
