âNow then, time for a little appetizer,â Noa said with a sly grin, like a predator toying with its prey. The soft, cloud-like aura sheâd displayed moments ago suddenly shiftedâsharp, dangerous. It was as if something feral was lurking within that fluff.
Amelia clutched her cards tightly. In a flash, she felt as if she had been dragged into a vast, barren battlefield. Before her, she could clearly see Elana facing off against Gumber.
She and Noa werenât just playing a card game anymoreâthey were witnessing the battle unfold as if it were real. The sheer intensity confused her. Was this the difference between a pro and a casual player?
âBattle!â Noa declared, her voice booming.
âGumber, attack Elana!â
Gumber charged with his sword drawn, dashing toward Elana at high speed. Reacting quickly, Elana summoned a magical barrier to defend herselfâbut the shield shattered, and Gumberâs strike landed clean.
Elana was defeated and returned to the Guide Zone.
âIâll deal direct damage with both Gummy Minions!â
Each Gummy Minion had 1,500 ATK.
Ameliaâs LP dropped to 7,000.
âTurn end,â Noa said, lifting her head and smiling at Amelia. âNow thenâletâs see what kind of dish youâll be serving next.â
Amelia exhaled sharply. This was the first time sheâd ever felt pressure like this while playing Guide Rise.
So this is what a defending champion feels likeâ¦
The weight behind each moveâitâs on a whole other levelâ¦
âDraw!â Amelia snapped herself back to focus. If her opponent wasnât holding back, then neither would she!
âOP Limit increase! Generate 3 OP!â
âGuide Call! Elana, descend once more and bless this battlefield!â
âElanaâs ability activates!â Amelia announced. âI reveal one âDivine Instrumentâ card from my hand!â
Once again, she revealed Upright Piano.
âWith this, I can activate one âDivine Instrumentâ from my hand for free!â
She placed a card in the far-left slot of her Support Zone, deliberately leaving the center space open.
âDivine Instrument, Calibratic Cymbals!â
âAll of my opponentâs followersâ ATK are halvedâand my follower gains the total lost ATK!â
Gumber: 3,500 â 1,750
Gummy Minions: 1,500 â 750 (each)
Elana: 2,500 â 5,750
The moment Amelia resolved the effect, Noa could hear itâthe clash of cymbals echoing in the battlefield illusion. The sound sent a chill of delight down her spine.
If only this were a serious match, Noa thought wistfully. In an official duel, Iâd try to counter or bait out her tricksâbut to think Iâd witness raw talent like this⦠The world really is vast.
âNow I pay 3 OP to activate Upright Piano!â
The barren field around them transformed once more. A soft, elegant melody filled the air like a warm breeze blanketing the battlefield.
âI recover 1,000 LP!â
Amelia LP: 7,000 â 8,000
At least Iâm back where I startedâ¦
âHarmonious Harmonicaâs other effect activates!â Amelia continued. âAs long as I control three âDivine Instrumentsâ with different names, I can Attach them all to one follower on my field!â
This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
âI attach all three instruments to Elana!â
Noaâs eyes narrowed slightly, intrigued. Attach, huhâ¦? Her gaze dropped to the board, watching closely. Letâs see what youâre planning.
âAttachâ was a core mechanic of Guide Rise, where special support cardsâcalled Attachmentsâwere bound directly to followers. These empowered them with passive or activated abilities, turning the tide of battle with proper setup.
Attachments remain on the Support Zone, just like Fixed Supports.
But there was a key differenceâif the follower theyâre attached to is destroyed, the Attachments are also destroyed alongside it.
âBattle!â Amelia declared with force.
âElanaâs other ability activates! For each Attachment linked to her, she gains one additional attack!â
âThat means this turn, Elana can attack four times!â
âElana, attack Gumber!â
Elana raised the harmonica in her hand and played a piercing melody. The notes reverberated through the battlefield illusion like a sacred hymn. Gumber staggered and fell to his knees.
Amelia looked across at her opponentâNoa was smiling.
âNoa⦠you look happy?â
She didnât understand. The situation clearly wasnât in Noaâs favor. Yet that cheerful smile stayed bright on her face.
Noa looked up at Amelia, eyes gleaming.
âBecause this is fun,â she said simply.
âFun?â Amelia echoed, bewildered.
Noa nodded, her tone gentle.
âI can feel it so clearlyâthe kind of prayer youâve poured into your deck. Watching you fight with everything youâve got... it makes me happy.â
Amelia stared. That sort of sincerity caught her off guard.
âEven if youâre about to lose?â she asked, without hesitationâso confident in her position.
âWin or lose doesnât matter. A battle is always fun.â
Noaâs reply felt like a quoteâsomething passed down from someone important.
ââ¦Thatâs what my teacher taught me.â
She reached forward, lifting one of her Gummy Minions off the board and placing it into the outside of playmat.
âGumberâs ability activates!â
âWhen Gumber would be destroyed in battle, I can sacrifice one Gummy Minion instead to protect him! And when I doâGumber gains 1 Sweet Counter for each Gummy Minion destroyed this way.â
âWhat?!â Amelia gasped. She hadnât expected another layer to Noaâs defense.
She didnât yet know what Sweet Counters didâbut something told her itâd be dangerous to let too many pile up.
âTurn end,â she said reluctantly, lowering her hand.
âYou shouldâve kept going,â Noa said softly, almost disappointed.
âAnd just let you reach whatever goal you're aiming for?â Amelia shot back, a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
Noa laughed cheerfully.
âMaybe. If you kept attacking, I might have gotten what I wanted.â
âBut what if my goal⦠was to make you end your turn early?â
âDoesnât that mean Iâve already gotten the dish I wanted?â
Amelia swallowed. She looked at Noa, trying to read her.
But despite her bright, cheery smile, she couldnât see anything beneath it.
âSince youâve shown me your deckâs flavorâ¦â
ââ¦Allow me to serve mine.â
âMy turn. Draw!â

âI seeâ¦â Vio nodded deeply after listening to Lioraâs explanation.
The two of them were sitting on a bench in a small riverside park near Vioâs store. The clear water flowed gently in front of them, offering a rare moment of calm.
Liora had just told Vio about her strained relationship with her little sisterâAmaya, the real identity behind the idol "Amelia."
âBut I still donât get itâ¦â Vio turned to look directly into Lioraâs eyes.
âWhy put that distance between you and your sister? From what youâve told me⦠I donât think you ever needed to.â
Liora felt like Vioâs gaze could unravel her thoughts in an instant, so she looked away.
âIâm afraidâ¦â she muttered, her voice quieter than usual. Her shoulders suddenly felt unbearably heavy.
âIâm afraid that if she sees the real meâ¦â
âIf she gets too close and realizes how disgusting I truly amâ¦â
ââ¦sheâll hate me.â
Vio sighed.
âI think youâre just overthinking itââ
âIâm not!â Liora snapped, cutting her off.
âAmaya⦠Amaya sees her big sister as a beacon of light. Someone kind. Helpful. Compassionate. Someone good.â
âIfâ¦â
âIf she ever realized how many corpses lie beneath my feet⦠how much blood stains these handsâ¦â
ââ¦wouldnât she hate me?â
âShe doesnât know the choices Iâve made... the people Iâve hurt just to survive. I didnât always have the luxury of doing the ârightâ thing. If she knew the things Iâve doneâ¦â
Vio stood up, then crouched down in front of Liora.
Vio stared at Liora for a long second. Then, without a word, she exhaled, slow and heavyâlike she was holding back a wave of emotion. Her brows furrowed, not with anger, but something close to heartbreak.
And thenâpinch.
Without warning, she grabbed both of Lioraâs cheeks and pinched them hard.
âOwâ!â Liora cried, rubbing her now-red cheeks. That actually hurt.
âWhat was that for?!â she asked, confused and a bit annoyed.
âThatâs punishment for being an idiot,â Vio replied firmly.
âYouâre being stupid, Liora!â
âHow can you be so sure sheâd hate you?â
âYou didnât even give her the chance to knock on your heart. Worseâyou didnât even let her get close enough to knock.â
âThatâsâ¦â
Liora wanted to argue backâbut no words came to her.
ââ¦I just want her to always smile happily.â
âBy covering her eyes and ears?â Vio shot back, voice sharp.
âYou do realize youâre treating her like a little kid, right?â
Lioraâs lips parted, but no words came out. Her chest tightened. For a moment, her vision blurredâjust for a secondâand she quickly looked away.
âOpen your eyes, Lia.â
âYour little sisterâs grown up. Sheâs an idol nowâsomeone who stands on stage and shines for others to see.â
âIâm sure sheâs seen her fair share of this worldâs ugliness by now.â
Vio reached out and gently, but firmly, held Lioraâs face, making her look up.
âThatâs why you need to talk to her. Really talk to her. Heart to heart.â
Vioâs voice softened, barely above a whisper now. âBecause... I think sheâs waiting for you to reach out, too.â
âAnd then youâll know whether things are as bad as youâve imagined.â
A soft, peaceful smile bloomed on Vioâs face. It wasnât her usual teasing grinâthis one was tender, calming, and sincere.
