Nova walked in silence, her boots crunching against the brittle, decayed ground. The once-vibrant landscape was now a sea of gray and ash, its lifelessness stretching endlessly before her. Each step she took felt heavier than the last, the pulsations in her skull syncing with the faint vibrations beneath her feet. The rhythms of the planet had grown louder, more insistent, like a persistent hum that she couldn't block out.
She stopped and looked back at the gollums and the Prism being trailing behind her, their towering forms both alien and unnervingly calm. The Prism being's glow reflected faintly off the metal gollum, casting distorted patterns across its smooth surface.
"Why me?" Nova asked, her voice cutting through the oppressive silence. She turned to face them fully, her hands trembling at her sides. "Why do I have to be the one to do this?"
The metal gollum stepped forward, its reflective surface catching the light. Through Osric, its voice rang out, smooth and deliberate. "You are... uniquely capable. Your presence... transforms."
Nova shook her head, frustration boiling just beneath the surface. "You've said that before. But what does it actually mean? Why can't you fix the imbalance? Why can't you deal with this... plague yourselves?"
The stone gollum shifted slightly, its rough, fissured surface groaning as it moved. Its voice, deep and resonant, emerged through Osric: "This place... responds to you. Not to us."
"That's not an answer," Nova snapped. "If you care so much about balance, why not take care of it yourselves? Why do I have to clean up your mess?"
The Prism being stepped forward, its iridescent facets shimmering faintly. "We are... this place," it said, its tone calm but unyielding. "You are... apart. Separate. Only you can... restore what has broken."
Nova stared at them, her heart pounding. Their words rang hollow, evasive. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was more they weren't telling her.
"And if I don't?" she asked, her voice low. "If I refuse to help you destroy another village? What happens then?"
The gollums were silent, their towering forms unmoving. The Prism being's glow dimmed slightly, its tone soft yet firm. "This place will... suffer."
Nova clenched her fists. "Suffer how? Because of me? Or because you refuse to act without me?"
The metal gollum's voice rang out again. "Your presence is... necessary. Without you, the balance cannot be... restored."
Their answers only deepened her unease. She turned away from them, her gaze drifting over the barren terrain. The pulsations in her skull grew stronger, more invasive, as though the planet itself were pressing into her mind.
As she walked, Nova tried to push the gollums' words out of her mind, but the rhythms of the planet wouldn't let her. The vibrations beneath her feet felt alive, almost sentient, pulsing in time with the beating of her heart.
She stopped again, her breath catching in her throat. The ground ahead seemed to shift slightly, the air thick with a tension she couldn't name. The pulsations in her skull sharpened, and for a brief moment, she felt as though the planet itself was watching her.
Nova glanced back at the gollums and the Prism being, their forms still and silent. Whatever was waiting ahead, she would have to face it.
ââ
The air grew heavier as Nova stepped into the ruins of the village. What remained of the crystalline structures shimmered faintly, their jagged remnants scattered like shards of broken dreams across the decayed ground. She slowed her pace, her eyes darting across the wreckage, half expecting to see movement.
Her pulse quickened when she did.
Near the edge of a collapsed spire, a figure emerged. Its form was jagged and angular, its body glinting with the same crystalline material as the structures around it. It moved slowly at first, its sharp limbs scraping against the ground, as though injured or weakened.
Nova's breath caught. "Is thatâ"
The creature turned toward her, its faceted face reflecting the dim light in fractured, eerie patterns. There was no hesitation. It lunged.
Nova barely had time to react. The creature's movements were sudden and relentless, its limbs slicing through the air like blades. She stumbled backward, raising her arms defensively as it came closer.
"Wait!" she shouted, her voice trembling. "I don't want to hurt you!"
The creature didn't stop. It slashed at her with one jagged limb, narrowly missing her as she twisted away. The pulsations in her skull grew sharper, each one syncing with the creature's erratic movements.
Nova scrambled to regain her footing, her heart pounding. "Osric!" she cried. "What is it doing?"
Osric's fragmented voice crackled in her ear. "Hostile... response. Purpose unknown. Recommend... evasion."
Nova turned toward the gollums and the Prism being, who stood silently at the edge of the ruins, watching.
"Do something!" she shouted, her voice cracking. "Help me!"
The gollums didn't move. The stone one tilted its head slightly, as if observing her reaction, but neither it nor the metal figure made any effort to intervene.
"They're just watching," Nova muttered, panic rising in her chest. "They're not going to help me."
She dodged another swipe from the creature, its jagged limbs cutting through the brittle ground where she had stood moments before. Her options were running out.
The pulsations in her skull were deafening now, the planet's rhythms surging through her like a tidal wave. She felt the connection deep within her, raw and untapped. Desperation overtook her fear.
Nova stopped running and turned to face the creature, her fists clenched. "I don't want to hurt you," she whispered, her voice shaking. "But I don't have a choice."
She focused on the pulsations, letting the energy build. The ground beneath her feet trembled as the vibrations grew stronger, coursing through her body like a live wire.
With a shout, she released the energy in a burst of light and sound. The creature froze mid-lunge, its crystalline form vibrating violently before shattering into a million pieces. The fragments scattered across the ground, glowing faintly before fading to nothing.
Nova stood still, her chest heaving, her hands trembling at her sides.
The silence that followed was suffocating. She stared at the fragments, her mind racing.
"I didn't have a choice," she whispered to herself, her voice hollow. "It wouldn't stop. It was trying to kill me."
The gollums remained motionless, their towering forms bathed in the faint glow of the ruined village. The Prism being's light flickered softly, as though in approval.
"It's not like it was a person," Nova said, more to herself than anyone else. "It was... like a pest. Like a bee trying to sting me. I wouldn't feel guilty for crushing a bee, right?"
She swallowed hard, her gaze dropping to her hands. The faint tremor in her fingers hadn't subsided.
The pulsations in her skull quieted, but their presence lingered, a reminder of what she had doneâand what she might do again.
ââ
Nova walked through the ruins in silence, her head bowed and her heart heavy. The shards of the crystalline creature still glittered faintly in the dim light, scattered like remnants of a broken mirror. The pulsations in her skull had not subsided. If anything, they were growing stronger, more insistent, like a drumbeat that was no longer just hers.
The air around her felt charged, humming with a strange energy that seemed to pull at her every step. She paused and looked around, her eyes scanning the landscape. The decayed terrain, once still and lifeless, seemed to quiver faintly at the edges of her vision, as though responding to her presence.
A shiver ran through her. She had felt the planet's rhythms before, but this was different. This was deeper, more intimate.
She stopped by a cluster of collapsed structures, her breathing shallow. The pulsations in her skull were now accompanied by a faint hum in the air, a resonance that seemed to emanate from the ground itself. It wasn't just inside her anymoreâit was everywhere.
Nova raised her hand instinctively, her fingers trembling as they brushed the air. The faint vibrations grew louder, and the ground beneath her feet shifted.
At first, it was subtleâa ripple running through the brittle terrain. Then the sky darkened abruptly, and a gust of wind tore through the ruins, scattering ash and dust into the air.
Nova gasped, stumbling back as the wind grew stronger, swirling around her in a chaotic spiral. The pulsations in her skull surged, and the vibrations in the ground intensified. She pressed her hands to her temples, trying to block it out, but the energy only grew.
The wind howled louder, and cracks began to spread across the ground, splitting the terrain in jagged patterns. Nova dropped to her knees, panic overtaking her.
"Stop!" she shouted, her voice breaking. "Stop it!"
As suddenly as it began, the storm ceased. The wind vanished, the sky lightened, and the ground fell still once more. Nova knelt in the eerie silence, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath.
She stared at her trembling hands, her mind racing. "Did I... do that?" she whispered.
Osric's voice crackled faintly in her ear. "Environmental... disruption detected. Cause... unclear."
Nova shook her head, her thoughts spinning. It didn't feel unclear. She had felt itâthe connection, the energy surging through her, the way the planet seemed to bend and twist around her presence.
Her breath hitched as a terrifying thought crept into her mind. "Is it me? Or... is it the planet?"
The pulsations in her skull softened but remained, a steady, omnipresent rhythm that felt both familiar and alien.
She looked around the ruins, her gaze falling on the cracks she had created, the lingering chaos from the storm. The power she had felt was intoxicating, terrifying, and deeply unsettling.
"Am I doing this?" she murmured. "Or is it... making me?"
The silence that followed felt heavy, as though the planet itself was listening, waiting for her to figure it out.
ââ
Nova walked behind the gollums and the Prism being, her legs moving automatically, as though her body had resigned itself to their commands. The decayed landscape stretched endlessly ahead of her, but it didn't seem as vast as before.
With each step, the terrain shifted in subtle ways. The cracked ground gave way to jagged ridges that blurred past her, and distant hills seemed to collapse into the horizon. She stumbled at times, feeling disoriented, as if the distances themselves were shrinking.
Her head swam, the pulsations in her skull now a faint hum that seemed to guide her movements. Time felt slippery, dissolving into a hazy dream where each step propelled her farther than it should.
Nova pressed a hand to her stomach, a faint ache reminding her of her physical needs. "How long have we been walking?" she muttered, her voice barely audible. "I haven't eaten... not since..."
She trailed off, the thought incomplete. It felt impossible to measure how much time had passed since the crash. Hours? Days? The surreal, shifting landscape made everything uncertain.
Her vision wavered as the gollums continued their deliberate, steady pace. The Prism being glided ahead, its iridescent light shimmering like a beacon. Nova wanted to stop, to sit and breathe, but her legs carried her forward, as though compelled by an unseen force.
"You must continue," the metal gollum said through Osric, its tone as calm and unyielding as ever.
"Continue what?" Nova asked, her voice shaking. "Destroying them? Killing everything I touch?"
"To preserve balance," the stone gollum replied, stepping forward. "The harm they bring... outweighs their existence."
The Prism being glowed faintly, its light soft and inviting. "The choice is... yours. Act to restore harmony, or let this place... decay further."
Nova turned toward them, her fists clenching at her sides. "You're not giving me a choice," she said bitterly. "You're forcing me."
The metal gollum tilted its head slightly. "We do not... force. You... decide."
But their tone carried an implicit warning, one that weighed heavily in the air between them.
The ridge loomed ahead, its jagged edges giving way to an unexpected sight. As Nova followed the gollums and the Prism being, the ground below them began to shift, trembling as though alive. She froze mid-step as crystalline formations started to rise from the earth, their sharp, angular shapes glinting faintly in the dim light.
The structures grew taller, their edges aligning in deliberate patterns, folding and expanding like a massive, living puzzle. A faint blue glow emanated from their surfaces, the same eerie light that had filled the chamber of the first structure.
"What is this?" Nova whispered, her voice barely audible over the low hum that filled the air.
"The amplifier," the stone gollum said through Osric, its deep voice reverberating like a tremor. "This place... draws from you."
Nova's stomach twisted as she watched the structure continue to grow, its form taking on the same unnatural, almost predatory symmetry as the first one.
She took a hesitant step forward, her heart pounding. The blue light pulsed faintly, syncing with the rhythms in her skull. The connection felt stronger here, the planet's pull more invasive.
"This is the same as before," Nova said, her voice shaking. "The same kind of structure. It... amplifies me, doesn't it? It makes everything worse."
The metal gollum's reflective surface rippled faintly as it replied. "It amplifies... what must be done."
Nova turned to the Prism being, its radiant glow casting soft shadows over the forming structure. "Why does it have to be me?" she asked, her voice rising. "Why can't you do this yourselves? Why do I have to keep destroying things?"
The Prism being tilted its crystalline head slightly, its light flickering. "This place... responds to you. Only you can... restore balance."
The words felt hollow, like an excuse. Nova clenched her fists, her breathing shallow. "And what happens if I don't? What happens if I refuse?"
The gollums stood silent for a moment, their towering forms unnervingly still. Then, the stone gollum replied, "This place... will decay. Chaos will spread. You will... remain."
The implicit threat in its tone sent a chill down her spine.
Beyond the rising structure, Nova saw the faint glow of another village. Its crystalline buildings were smaller and less elaborate than the previous one, their soft light flickering against the darkened terrain. Figures moved between the structures, their movements fluid and purposeful.
Nova's chest tightened. They didn't look like a plague. They didn't look like a threat. They looked alive.
Her gaze drifted back to the forming structure, its blue glow intensifying as it grew taller, sharper. The pulsations in her skull grew stronger, their rhythm syncing with the eerie hum that filled the air.
"You must act," the metal gollum said.
The Prism being stepped closer, its tone calm but unyielding. "Restore balance. Use this place. You will... succeed."
Nova stepped closer to the edge of the ridge, her hands trembling. The village below glowed faintly, its inhabitants oblivious to the danger creeping toward them.
Her mind raced with conflicting thoughts. The gollums' logic was undeniableâif the new race truly was a plague, destroying them would save the planet. But the destruction she had already witnessed weighed heavily on her.
The blue light of the structure reflected in her eyes as she looked down at her hands, still trembling from the power she had unleashed before.
She turned to the gollums and the Prism being, her voice breaking. "You promised to fix my ship. You promised I could leave."
"We will," the stone gollum said. "But you must... finish this."
Nova stared at the glowing village below, her heart pounding. The pulsations in her skull were deafening now, the connection between her and the planet stronger than ever. The decision pressed down on her, heavy and suffocating.
