Candace was in no mood for this. âI donât accept calls from salespeople. Canât you get rid of him?â People who didnât have her direct number were cold callers and no better than parasites.
âThis caller sounds real angry and keeps calling back. Please take it,â the receptionist begged. âHe says itâs an urgent query regarding Savannah Page and he canât get hold of her.â
Candace sat up and pressed the phone piece close to her ear. She closed the screen images sheâd been looking at during her lunch-hour. Images of the two of them on vacation in Miami. âPut him through,â she said, sucking her breath in irritation. âCandace Oakley. How can I help?â
âAbout bloody time too,â the male caller sounded annoyed. âI want to speak to Savannah Page.â
âIâm afraid Ms. Page is away until Monday,â Candace replied, testily. It should have been her in Miami, not that bitch.
âMonday?â The manâs voice had a rough edge to it, and she wondered what he was after.
âIs it something I can help you with?â Candace asked, sensing this wasnât a normal cold caller.
âItâs personal.â
âA personal matter?â Her ears pricked up. âDo you have her cell phone number?â
âIâve tried, but she ainât answering. Could be âcos Iâm her ex-husband.â She heard a coarse laugh.
âYou are?â Candace sat back in her chair and rubbed her fingers together. Her day had instantly brightened.
âYes, Maâam.â
Candaceâs voice melted, and she smiled. âIs there anything I can do to help?â
âIâm not sure.â The manâs voice suddenly dimmed, as if hope was lost. âI was in town and I was hoping to meet up with her and my son.â
âUnfortunately Ms. Page is away with Mr. Stone. I could let her know you called.â
âI was looking for her address. You wouldnât happen to know it, would you?â He asked. Candace laughed at the suggestion.
âHer address?â Her fingers trembled as she clicked the mouse and retrieved Savannahâs personal file, something that only a few people outside of HR had access to. âWhy of course,â she stared at the details on the screen, her heart pitter-pattering away. âThis information is strictly confidential, you understand, donât you?â
âI swear I wonât tell anyone. Youâd be doing me a huge favor, Maâam. I hitch-hiked for over ten hours just to come and see them.â
Hitch-hiked? She wrinkled her nose in disgust. âI hope you understand what a huge risk Iâm taking.â
âIâd be mighty obliged and thankful to you. My ex-wife wonât even let me see my son. Do you know if Jacobâs gone with them?â
Candace couldnât believe her luck. She cleared her throat. âI believe itâs a personal vacation theyâve taken. Again, Iâve already said more than I should have.â
âWho the hellâs she left my son with?â
Candace smiled at the anger in his voice. âI believe Ms. Pageâs parents are here. AgainâIâve said too much.â
âThank you, Maâam. I ainât heard nothing from you. If you could give me the address.â Candace lowered her voice and read it out to him.
