"Hello?" Pt. 1804 words~5 min read

Unedited

Kind (but not really) true. Because, even though they still talk every day, it's not the same.

"Good evening. Or, rather, good afternoon."

"I'm in London."

"What?"

"I'm in London. So."

"When did you get back?"

"Today."

"Yeah, but... how?"

"I flew."

"No, I mean... what?"

"I had an evening flight last night and I arrived here at eight am this morning."

"But... you never said that you were coming home by today. I thought today you were flying."

"Yeah, you thought. You should have asked, not just assume things. If people assume things, they get it wrong."

"So, you're here? You're back?"

"For now, yes."

"Do you want to-"

"No."

"Not even to see Alfie?"

"Don't blackmail me, Daniel."

"Soph-"

"Don't call me that."

"Ok."

"..."

"So, what did you do today?"

"I went to the Vogue offices."

"How'd that go?"

"Fine. I'm not all that impressed by my temporary replacement."

"Why not?"

"Because they're useless."

"They can't be that bad?"

"Oh, they can be. And they are. I've recommended getting someone new."

"Like who?"

"I'm not sure. Probably Amber."

"Is she good?"

"No."

"But you'd still recommend her?"

"Best of a bad situation."

"Poor woman. What are you doing tomorrow?"

"It's my rest day. The marathon in Sunday, so I'm taking it easy tomorrow."

"Are you ready for the marathon?"

"It's not my first one, but even then, I'm never really prepared enough for them."

"Confident about your finish time?"

"Yeah."

"What time do you want to finish under?"

"A sub three would be good."

"A sub three? Like, running twenty two point six miles in less than three hours?"

"It's actually twenty six point two. And, yes."

"Is that possible?"

"Yes."

"Is it?"

"Paula Radcliffe ran it in two hours and fifteen minutes in two thousand and three."

"Nah, that's impossible."

"Wilson Kipsang ran it in two hours and four minutes."

"That's crazy."

"Maybe."

"So, anything under three hours?"

"Yeah."

"Can you do it?"

"Yeah."

"Confident."

"I ran the New York marathon last year in three-ten."

"Well, I'll be rooting for you."

"..."

"What are you doing tonight then?"

"I'm going out with friends."

"Oh, that's nice."

"Yeah, it will be."

"..."

"Jasmine came over with me, so I showed her the sights today and we're getting ready to go to the London Eye."

"Nice night for it."

"Yeah."

"..."

"..."

"Alfie knows the meaning of 'fetch' now."

"That's good."

"And sit."

"..."

"Nola's been teaching him."

"Cute."

"She's been asking about you, by the way."

"Nola?"

"Yeah."

"Oh."

"Wanted to know when she would see you again."

"..."

"I told her that you'd moved to New York for a while, but maybe when you move back... who knows."

"Right."

"She's with Elias tomorrow. Jenna's got me on stand-by just in case he cancels, though."

"Will he?"

"Probably. He tends to."

"How does Nola feel about that?"

"She's used to it. I wish she wasn't, but she is."

"..."

"So, yeah."

"I went to pick up the dress your grandmother is gifting to me."

"Yeah?"

"Daniel... do you know which dress it is? What it means?"

"Not a clue. Am I supposed to?"

"Probably not."

"Does it mean anything?"

"I think so."

"What?"

"I think it was your grandmother's wedding dress."

"Her what?"

"Her wedding dress."

"She gave you her wedding dress?"

"I think so."

"..."

"..."

"Huh."

"Yeah."

"I told you she likes you. This just proves it."

"I'm giving it back to her."

"Why?"

"Because I wasn't comfortable taking her regular dresses. I can't take her wedding dress. It's too much."

"Sophie, look... my grandmother wouldn't have given it to you if she didn't want you to have it. She adores you. Keep the dress."

"..."

"Sophie?"

"I'll think about it."

"Ok, that's your choice."

"Funny... I didn't think I had a choice. Whatever you say, goes."

"..."

"I have to go."

"Do you?"

"I'll rephrase- I better go."

"Right. Later, alligator?"

"Bye."

A/N

(I'm going to keep the A/N at the end, because then I can talk about what happened above. Sorry to those of you who preferred it at the beginning!)

So, I figured, whenever Sophie starts to get bitchy/bitter/snipey, she tends to hang up. It's like, even after everything Daniel's done to her, she still doesn't want to hurt his feelings. Which is kinda ironic, seeing as he stomped all over hers.

Anyway- thoughts on Sophie inheriting Daniel's grandmother's dress? Does this mean something?

That thread of the story is the only thing I have figured out right now. The rest is made up on the day I write, but Connie is rather important to the story development. Comment on your thoughts- why/how is she important? What will happen?

p.s. Chapter tomorrow! (Don't think Daniel is making an appearance, though.)
