What have I done?
Lifting my eyes, I see the heartache Iâve caused Carson, and it lashes brutally at my heart. I wrap my arms around him. âIâm so sorry. I was so stupid. I shouldâve given you a chance to explain.â
I want to crawl under the couch and just cry. Carson doesnât keep count of how many people heâs saved but just the ones heâs killed. He sees himself as a monster, and thatâs why I thought he was one.
But God⦠heâs the farthest thing from a monster. Heâs a saint⦠and I treated him like shit.
I hold him tighter, wishing I had known all of this sooner.
I swallow hard and say, âIn my defense, you really shouldnât use the term assassin. You canât blame me for equating that to a ruthless killer.â
I shake my head, and unable to stop rambling, I just keep going, âAlso, I was traumatized. I wasnât thinking straight.â
Carson just sits frozen, and it has me pulling back. Unable to keep still, I get up and begin to pace up and down the room.
What have I done?
Again the question shudders through me.
âAnd you did lie to me. It was a shock. Shitâ¦â I wipe the back of my hand over my clammy forehead, âyour collection of guns also didnât help things.â
I keep pacing faster and faster as the full impact of what Iâve done hits. âShit⦠shit⦠shit.â
My eyes dart to Carson. He just stares at me, looking a little confused.
âIâm so sorry I ruined things between us.â I stop for a moment then start to pace again. âShit.â
My tortured hermit, and I just ripped his heart out.
I gasp as it hits again. âIâm so sorry. I never meant to hurt you like that. If I had known, I wouldnât have left. I mean⦠we couldâve talked the rest of our problems out.â
Shock ripples over Carsonâs face, and his eyes zero in on me. âYou wouldnât have left?â he asks, his voice way calmer than I feel.
I nod. âYouâre not an assassin, Carson. Youâre a vigilante. Thereâs a huge difference. Thatâs the reason I left. Freaking assassin my butt.â
He gets up from the couch, cautiously asking, âWill you come back?â
I stare at him for a moment. âWe have a lot to talk about still, but Iâd like to try.â
Carsonâs breaths begin to speed up. âYou want to try a relationship? With me?â
My face crumbles with emotion and walking to him, I wrap my arms around his waist and hold him as tight as I can.
âIs that a yes?â he asks.
I nod against his chest. âWe can take it slow and really get to know each other this time.â
His arms clamp around me so tightly it borders on being painful. âIâll go at whatever pace you want.â
âThereâs a lot we still need to talk about,â I say as I pull back. âLetâs sit. I just got a lot of exercise in with all the pacing,â I joke, trying to lighten things between us.
Once weâre seated again, Carson asks, âWhat else do you want to talk about?â
âEverything.â I let out a burst of laughter. âSorry. Itâs going to be a long conversation.â
He gestures for me to start.
God. Where?
Start with the hardest part.
âWith what you do, Iâm sure you make a lot of enemies.â Carson takes a deep breath and nods. âIâ¦â I think for a moment about how to word it right, not wanting to do more damage than I already have. âWhat if they come after me?â
His answer comes fast, âThatâs why I got MJ for you.â
I nod then say, âBy the way, sheâs really good. She totally wiped the floor with this guy who kept asking me out.â
Carsonâs eyebrow lifts, and his eyes narrow. His voice drops low as he bites out the words, âWhat guy?â
âJust some guy.â I make a careless motion with my hand. âI donât know who he is. The point is MJâs good. I asked her to teach me how to fight.â
âWhen did this happen?â he asks, not looking happy at all.
âYesterday.â
Slowly Carson nods. âIâm glad you feel safe with her.â
âOh, back to the topic of your enemies. If we date, can I still move around freely?â
âOf course.â He reaches for the tag around my neck and taps a finger against it. âIf something does go wrong, Iâll find you quickly.â
âYeaaah⦠Iâm kind of hoping nothing goes wrong. Once was enough for me.â
âIt shouldnât have happened.â He says, regret tightening his features. âI was so focused on trying to figure out how to tell you who I am that I made a stupid mistake,â Carson explains. âIf you had known what I do, I wouldâve been armed, and they wouldnât have gotten near you. Iâm sorry I let it happen.â
âThere was a whole group ofâ¦â I remember how he took out the nine in the room and stop from saying he was outnumbered because clearly, he wasnât.
âI donât just have enemies. I have a lot of contacts who will help if trouble comes knocking,â Carson tries to set me at ease.
âWho?â
âDamien and Winter. Theyâre only a couple of hours away. Lucian. Heâs in Italy and owes me for saving his ass. My brother and Demitri. Even my brotherâs business partner will help out.â
It makes me feel a lot better hearing that.
What else? Oh, right. The lie.
âI get why you lied to me, but please donât do that again.â
âI wonât.â
âIs there anything I should know?â I ask. âNowâs the time to tell me.â
Carson thinks for a moment, then shakes his head. âNot that I can think of. You know everything. If Iâm not working, Iâm home.â
âSo you donât have any dark secrets hidden in that bat cave of yours?â
His mouth curves up into a hot grin. âNo, I donât.â
I only have one question left, and I have to swallow hard before asking, âWhen we were in that room, how did you do it? Not showing any emotion?â
Carson takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly before he looks at me. âKeeping you alive was all that mattered. It killed me, but knowing what they could do to you kept me from reacting.â
For the first time, I admit, âYou just sitting there, not even looking at me hurt more than what they did to me.â
Carson begins to reach for me but then stops and lowers his hand.
âIâm not saying it to make you feel bad. I just need to talk to you about it.â
âIf I could, I wouldâve traded places with you in a heartbeat,â he murmurs, the regret deepening on his face.
I give him a pleading look. âIf we get back together, you wonât let that happen to me again?â
He lifts his hand and places his palm against the side of my neck. His thumb brushes over my jaw. âI promise it wonât. Iâll protect you with my last breath.â
CARSON
Haileyâs eyes drift over my face, and a smile begins to tug at her lips. âIs that your natural hair color?â
âYes. It made it easier to watch you.â
âI felt you,â she admits. âExcept for the last week.â
âSorry,â I apologize. âI couldnât stay away.â
âYou make it impossible for a girl to get over you,â she says with a teasing tone.
I keep staring at her, scared this is just a dream.
âWill you forgive me?â I ask.
When Hailey nods, the sun starts to break through the darkness.
âYouâre mine?â I ask.
A smile I havenât seen on her face before tugs shyly at her lips as she nods.
âAre you still scared of me?â
She scrunches her nose. âA little bit.â
Tilting my head, I say, âI will never hurt you.â
âI know.â She sucks in a breath and gestures at me. âI need to get to know this version of you. You were intense when I thought you were just a recluse but knowing what youâre capable of doing with your bare hands⦠and all the weaponsâ¦â Her hands flutter nervously, âThe whole setup⦠itâs very intimidating.â
âWeâll take it slow,â I assure her. âGet to know me again.â
âIâd like that.â She gets up, then says, âIâm going to make coffee. You want some?â
âSure.â
I watch as she prepares the two cups, and then it hits â Haileyâs giving us another chance, and this time there are no lies to ruin it all.
âJust so youâre aware, Iâm never letting you go,â I say.
She glances at me with a teasing smile. âYouâve made that abundantly clear.â
Bringing the coffee, she hands me a cup. She sits down, leaning her shoulder against the cushion.
âCan I really not ask you about the contracts?â she asks.
I hate talking about my work but knowing I have to be open with Hailey about it in order to keep her, I say, âWhat do you want to know?â
She lowers her cup and rests it on her knee. âHow does it work?â
âThey send the request through, and after I check it out, I reply whether Iâm accepting or declining it. After itâs done, the contract is closed, and the paymentâs made to my account.â
She gives me a questioning look. âHow much do you get for a contract?â Reaching over, she touches my forearm. âIf you donât mind me asking.â Pulling back, she takes a sip of her coffee.
âIt depends.â I shrug as I set the cup down on the floor next to the couch. âThe time frame Iâm given and who it is make a difference in what I ask, but itâs usually between five and ten million.â
Hailey sputters into her cup and coughs a couple of times, and then she gives me a what-the-fuck look. âYouâre joking⦠right?â Her eyes widen. âOh my God, Carson. What do you do with all that money?â Shaking her head, she mumbles, âI canât even fathom it.â
âI use some of it to make the work easier. Paying contacts and things like that.â Dimpo flashes through my thoughts. âSome of it I use to help people.â
Emotion washes over Haileyâs face. âThe innocent ones?â
I nod. âSometimes their circumstances place them at risk, and I just make it easier for them, so they donât get caught up in the same shit again.â
Hailey places her empty cup on the small coffee table, then she tilts her head at me, looking at me with amazement. âDo you even realize what a difference youâre making in the world?â
I shake my head and, scared sheâs not seeing the real me and that it will hit her at a later stage, I say, âDonât make me something Iâm not, Hailey. When all is said and done, Iâm still an assassin, and Iâm not going to stop.â
Heartbreak ripples over her beautiful face. She scoots closer to me, and lifting her hands, her palms find my jaw. She stares deep into my eyes. âCarson, how can you not see it. You keep count of the bad you do but not the good. Itâs like youâre refusing to even think that there can be any good in you. Why?â
My gaze drifts over her, wishing I could see myself through her eyes. âLike I said, information can be dangerous. I keep count of the kills so my enemies wonât forget. But the goodâ¦â I shake my head and Haileyâs hands lower to her lap. âI forget about them, so no one will be able to trace them through me.â
Theyâre scattered across the globe like little pockets of lights.
Starting to feel hot, I shrug out of my jacket and hang it over the arm of the couch.
âThe tears on your left arm. Theyâre for every kill,â Hayley says, her eyes on the tattoos. âYou should get stars on your right arm for all the ones youâve helped.â
I let out an empty burst of laughter. âI donât think so.â
Hailey leans into the cushion again, her eyes soft on me. âWhat do the other tattoos mean?â
âThe eight-pointed stars on my collarbones means Iâm a high-level criminal, and the double-headed eagle stands for power and justice.â
âPunishing the bad for their crimes and hope for those who canât help themselves,â she murmurs. Her eyes lift to mine. âThatâs how I see the double-headed eagle⦠and you.â
I really donât want to fuck this up, but I have to say, âAs long as you understand, Iâm not going to stop. Whenever I walk out of the door, Iâm going to kill someone.â
Hailey just stares at me, but thereâs no more horror in her gaze. âI choose to think of it as you walking out the door to save someone.â Then she lets out a chuckle. âBut Iâm not helping you pack your guns. Iâm not touching those things.â She shudders. âI have a gun phobia.â
âI prefer you donât go near them. I donât want you getting accidentally hurt,â I agree.
Turning my body toward hers, I rest my arm on the back of the couch.
Her gaze drifts over my body, then she asks, âHowâs your shoulder?â
âItâs fine.â
âCan I see?â she asks, lifting a hand to the collar of my shirt. When I nod, she moves much closer, and pulling the fabric slightly back, she inspects the scar. âAt least it healed.â
I turn my face to hers as she begins to pull back, and our eyes lock, her soft scent drifting around me. Anticipation explodes through my chest as Hailey moves her hand from my shoulder to the side of my neck.
âWill you forgive me?â she whispers. âFor judging you so harshly?â
âThereâs nothing to forgive.â The atmosphere grows intimate, and unable to stop myself, I close the small distance between us and press my mouth to hers.
When Hailey doesnât pull away but instead moves closer to me, wrapping her arms around my neck, I lose the little control I had.
My lips claim hers with all the hope Iâve clung to over the past three months. My tongue brushes against hers, showing her just how much I love her. Then my teeth begin to nip at her lips from all the pent-up frustration of not being able to touch her for so long.
If it were up to me, Iâd strip her naked and fuck her, making sure every inch of her body never forgets who it belongs to.
But sheâs asked me to take it slow, and what Hailey wants, she gets.
Reluctantly, I break the kiss and pressing my forehead against hers, I mutter, âSlow is going to suck.â
âHuge hairy donkey balls,â she groans as she scoots away from me. âBut we need to take it slow. I really want a relationship between us to work and donât want to ruin anything.â
The corner of my mouth lifts, and I place my hand on her cheek. âAs long as I get to see you smile every day, we can take it slow.â
Haileyâs face lights up with happiness, and I just stare at her as her light chases the darkness.
The moon only shines at night because of the sun.
Haileyâs my sun.
