âYouâre telling me all of this is normal? You think sheâs normal? How well do you really know her?â Billy asked, frustrated at his friend. âYou get with her and all hell breaks loose!â
Lucas chugged the beer heâd let turn lukewarm. It took everything in his power not to punch the living daylights out of the man sitting across from him.
Itâd been a few weeks since his birthday, and not one fucking day had gone by without someone reminding him of how heâd ruined her.
âI know you love her, man, but love is blind sometimes. Sheâs a great girl and has made an incredible impact on you, but all yâall do isââ
Lucas slammed the bottle down on the table, forcing Billy to jump. âProtect each other? Letâs see the shit happen to Wanda then, tough guy. Youâd be a pathetic, blubbering piece of shit if that happened.â
Billy frowned. âMaybe sheâs doing it to herself!â
Lucas sighed. âOh yesâ¦hiring people to follow herâ¦blowing up a car in Vegasâ¦ordering my death match? You sound insane. Sheâs not!â
Billy shook his head. âPeople are mad crazy, Lucas, but fine! Letâs go to the house.â
Heath, Tim, Lyle, Billy, and Lucas made their way to the house in the woods, not telling anyone about their little excursionâespecially Layla.
âStill no signs of activity here. Iâm putting my bet on Paul and Lauren. They seem like real fucking psychos,â Tim said as the men trekked through the abandoned house. âPaulâs got the money to do it, and he did love her in his own twisted way.â
âIâm still watching Gretchen and her folks and yours, Lucas,â Billy said. âGot Chuck down in Galveston now.â
Lucas had heard all of this before. Staying off the radar meant higher powers were involved. No way people were slipping by them so easily.
âSylviaâs fine. Sheâs not coming back though until this is cleared, but I donât even know if sheâll come back then!â Heath chirped from the kitchen. âSee anything out of the ordinary here since you and Layla visited?â
Lucas frowned. It had been months since they had stepped foot in this godforsaken shithole, and it still felt like heâd never left.
âYou gonna fight anytime soon?â Tim hustled from the hallway. âYou know, you could go legit and box a few matches outside of the underground.â
Lucas sighed. It was like the entire world was against him and Layla being together.
âTim, I promised herâ¦â
Tim coughed. âYeah, and I love the hell out of her, we all do. Sheâs absolutely beautiful, smart, sweet, talented, the whole nine yards, but youâve been consumed by her.â
âIs it her or me?!â Lucas was on Tim in a flash as the other guys watched. âSome people think itâs her, some think itâs me. Hell, some people think both of us should be locked up in our very own padded cell together.
âYou fucking told me your damn self that I was a better man because of her, Tim, so what gives? Are you losing out on money? Is that it? The big bad Tornado ainât making you any dough now?â
Tim backed up. âTheyâre after you, friend, and I know you love her, but maybe you need to let her go.â

Shawna and Devon took Layla out for lunch the same day the guys searched the house.
âThis is a charming restaurant.â Layla beamed. âThank you for inviting me out. Itâs been crazy the last few weeks.â
Shawna eyed Devon knowingly. âLucas truly loves you, honey, butââ
Layla stopped chewing. She knew what was coming.
âHeâs gotten a lot more obsessed with you and everything youâre doing thatâ¦â Shawna trailed off.
âYou think heâs lost himself?â
Layla knew it was too good to be true. She had such a sinking dark feeling that it was Paul and Lauren that she figured if Lucas wasnât around, the madness would stop.
âWhat if Lucas is doing it?â Devon blurted out, Shawna shooting her a dangerous look.
âWhat?â Layla coughed. âYou canât be serious?â
Shawna sighed. âHeâs possessive and takes what he wants, Layla.â
âHeâs protecting me,â Layla said, a look of exasperation spreading across her face.
âWell, itâs almost October and yâall have been good so far with your new job and setting up the blueprints for the new place,â Devon said. âI just want you to think of your future, honey. Thatâs all.â

Lucas was waiting for her when she got home. His heart was pounding, and he was absolutely sick to his stomach. Sheâd never be at peace unless he was the one willing to make it happen.
âHey, babe! Whatâs going on here?â Layla stared at her belongings placed neatly by the front door. Lucas was standing in the middle of the living room with a lack of emotion on his rugged face.
âLucas? Why is my stuffâ¦?â She could feel her heart pounding out of her chest.
Lucas straightened up and breathed in deeply. âIâm letting you go.â
Layla frowned. âGo where?â
âAway from me. Here. Us.â
Laylaâs breathing hitched, and she smiled. âYouâre kidding, right? This is a prank?â
Lucas shook his head. âNo, it isnât. I need you to leave. Weâre notâ¦weâre not working out.â
Layla scoffed. âYou listened to them, didnât you? This is ridiculous. Letâs go talk about itââ
â~No~!â Lucas roared, startling Layla so much that her body trembled violently. âThis was wrong. We were wrong. I shouldnât have started this with you.â
âY-you donât mean thatâ¦â Laylaâs chin quivered as she held back her tears. âAll weâve been through? All weâre ~still~ going through? I thought you loved me!â
Lucasâs hands were clenched in fists, and he was sweating. âI do, but not like thisâmaybe not the way I should. This isâ¦too much.â
âToo much? Thatâs what I am? Too much?! All of those nights calming you down from your fucking attacks and Iâm too much? How dare you?!â She charged at him and pushed him hard, only driving him a step back.
âI gave you everything, Lucas! You protected me! I tried protecting you!â
Lucas grabbed her wrists and pulled her into him, his eyes dark. âNone of this bullshit started happening until we got involved. I know for a fucking fact that youâve thought about it.â
âThinking about it and breaking up with you are two different things, Lucas! Is it someone else?â
Lucas tossed her back, her feet fumbling. âItâs no one. There is no one else, Layla. Even if I love you, we canât do this anymore. We canât keep looking over our shoulders thinking someoneâs after usâespecially you.â
Layla sobbed. âYouâre leaving me to protect me? Are you fucking mad? I love you, Lucas. I love you so much and youâre tossing me away because Iâm a fucking inconvenience as usual.â
Lucas stepped forward. âYou deserveââ
Layla raised her hand. âStop. Iâve heard this from you before. Maybe you used me to get your frustrations out. I was just a tight hole for you, and now youâre done with me.â
Lucas shook his head. âThatâs not true.â
Layla gathered her two bags and headed out the door to her car, Lucas trailing behind.
âSo thatâs it? Nothing else? Youâre too much of a coward to be with me?â Layla held the driver-side door open, her keys shaking in her quaking hand.
âI have to move on, as do you, Little Hippie. Youâll find a good man.â
âYou donât ever get to fucking call me that again! I found a good man, and heâs standing in front of me trying to be hard and cruel. You address me as Layla or Miss Potter because you do not get the privilege of calling me anything else, Mr. Foster.â
Lucas was flush against her body as she tried to wiggle free. âThereâs nothing I want more than to tell you itâs going to be okay. I told you I was no good and fucking dangerous, but you stayed, and Iâve put you in harmâs way. Iâm sorry, babyâMiss Potter.â
Layla slapped him off. âDonât fucking touch me. Youâve been waiting for this moment. Everything weâve been through and now this? Iâm waiting for this to be some type of sick and twisted joke, but I know you, and youâre just out for you.â
âThatâs the way it should be,â Lucas lied.
Laylaâs tears flowed freely, her heart shattering into a million pieces.
âHere!â She pulled the promise ring off and threw it at Lucas, who let it fall to the ground. âI donât need it anymore. Thereâs no us, so thereâs no forever.â
He watched her slide into the car and peel out of the driveway. Picking up the ring, he let his own tears slip down his cheeks. He loved her more than anything in the world, but he had to let her go.
âItâs better this way, Layla.â Lucas fell to his knees, clutching the ring in his hand and muttering to himself. âYou wonât have to be burdened by me anymore. Youâll understand one day, Layla, I promise. Fly high, Little Hippieâ¦â
