âShe was drugged, unless she took something on her own before the party,â Doctor Wren said as Lucas stood next to Laylaâs bedside at the ER.
âWhat medicines are you on?â Wren skimmed the papers. âAnxiety, sleeping, antidepressantâ¦â
Layla blushed, but even though the doctor was a little concerned with how much she was prescribed, Wren didnât think that was the problem at the moment.
âYou hadnât taken anything with alcohol?â
âNo, and I take my meds at night and only my anxiety when I absolutely have to.â
Lucas was quick to tell Wren his medication in case it helped with the investigation.
âSomeone definitely slipped you something that youâre currently taking, but in a very high dose. You didnât overdose, but you were very close.â
Lucas growled. Itâs what they wanted. Officer Perkins couldnât find a trace of anything out of the ordinary from the party or in the bedroom.
âItâs insane. Like these people are damn phantoms.â
âI need to vet my crew,â Lucas told Gretchen as they stood in the hall so Layla could get some rest. âThat means you too.â
Gretchen, even though she was Laylaâs best friend, had to be weeded out as a suspect.
After the week, Lucas had cleared everyone, but that didnât make him feel better.
Layla was in the hospital for two days and sent home with her parents as Lucas trailed behind them.
Shelly got Layla into her room and resting before she and Ron spoke with Lucas.
âLook, is it something youâre not telling us? Someone you know that could be doing this to our baby because of you? An old flame? An enemy?â Ron chided as they sat for coffee at the kitchen table. âI told you what Iâd do if my daughter was hurt in any way, Lucas.â
Lucas couldnât think of anyone who would hurt Layla because of himâthey would go for the jugular and straight for him.
âI have a lot of enemies, but nothing to that capacity. This is a fucking cat and mouse game that even I canât understand.â
âSheâs got some time off before starting work again. Why not see if sheâs interested in finding Fred or her siblings?â Shelly offered.
Lucas ran his hands through his hair. âI donât want her disappointed if theyâre not receptive. However, I hate to do this, but I have to vet yâall as well.â
âLike hell!â Ron stood up, ready to pound Lucasâs face in. Lucas didnât flinch. âIâd never do this to my daughter. Neither would Shelly!â
Lucas had already allowed Heath and Lyle to pay a visit to Nick and Brenda again, and they were cleared.
âCovering all the bases, Ron.â
Ron scoffed. âFine. Do what needs to be done.â
Layla was standing in the kitchen now, sobbing. âWhat if itâs you, Lucas?â
Lucas stood up and readied himself to gather her in his arms, but she backed up.
âNo, IâI canâtâ¦â Her eyes were bloodshot, and she was shaking, trembling violently as if there was a draft. âJust do what you need to do and go to work. I will be fine.â
âI asked for the day off, baby girl.â Lucas didnât invade her space; he couldnât make her feel uncomfortable.
âI donât want to be near Colt or Paul or anyone else except for you, Lucas. Youâre going to save me, right? Youâll make all of the boogeymen go away?â
Lucas wasnât sure if she was having a breakdown or being sarcastic. Her tone was different but could have been the amount of meds flowing through her system.
âIâm a pretty little doll face, right?â Layla said to Lucas as he led her back to her room. âI donât have all of my freckles anymoreâjust the ones across my nose.â
Lucas frowned as she brought her big stuffed teddy bear to the bed.
âAm I cute? Should I put bows in my hair?â
âLaylaâ¦â
âI was there for a few days, Lucas. They dressed me up and sang to meâlike I was younger than eleven.â
She was remembering more every day.
âI should sleep.â
Lucas nodded. âYou should, Little Hippie. Iâve got you covered.â
âAre you going to pound me with that big, fat, throbbing cock of yours? I feel it nudging against my leg.â
âNo, not today. Today is recovery day, baby.â
âThatâs no fun.â Layla pouted, and he then smelled her breath.
âWhereâs the booze?â Lucas sighed.
Layla leaned over, smiling and hiccuping. âItâs in me,â she whispered.
âGoddammit, Layla. You want your fucking stomach pumped?â
âI didnât take any pillsâyet.â
Something was happening to her. She was acting like old Lucas, and Lucas didnât like it.
âLetâs get your bowls out, baby girl. Wanna do some meditation?â
âI want to fuck you while you lick whiskey off of my naked body.â
âAs tempting as that sounds, you need rest. Iâll stay with you until youâ¦â Lucas looked up to find Layla already asleep.
âLittle Hippie, what the hell is going on with you?â he whispered, snuggling in next to his woman who desperately needed a break.

âI think itâs been Paul,â Gretchen said as she and Layla sat in Laylaâs room. âI bet he slipped in and did something to your drink. Who the hell else would it be? Lauren?â
Layla gasped. âOh my God! What if?!â
Gretchen frowned. âBut why?â
âHe keeps telling Lucas how horrible Lucas is for me.â
âWell, I mean, I like Lucas, but things are weird with you two together, yeah?â
âCoincidence.â
âIs it? Or do you just want it to be?â
âGretchen, maybe itâs you!â Layla yelled in anger.
Gretchen scowled. âIt isnât me, Layla. I wouldnât dream of doing this to someone and Iâd never, ever hurt you.â

Layla didnât know what to believe. Her life was going in slow motion sometimes and some days it was all a blur.
She was helping around the farms before the summer was over and she was looking over her shoulder every minuteâbut Lucas seemed to be close by at all times.
âDid you get the job here to be near me?â Layla teased as she and Lucas fed the horses and chickens at Bonnerâs Farm.
âI did. Hell, even if I wasnât protecting you, Iâd still want to be near you, baby girl.â
âObsessed with me?â
âI seem to recall a particular auburn woman begging me to fuck her into oblivion last night and got oh so mad when I had to take a phone call.â
âMe? Not me⦠I couldnât have been that woman.â Layla blushed, rolling her eyes at her man. âStop staring at me. Youâre feeding the same chicken.â
âGuess I will just have to feed this cock over here in a minute.â
âWhat are you going to feed it?â
Lucas laughed, startling the horse standing nearby. âSuch a fucking tease.â
They were inseparable, and even though little things would happen that were unusualâcars following them, finding their houses unlocked or cars openedâthey tried to lead a normal life.
âSo, I decided to reach out to the foster parents of Bea and Ben and theyâre going to let me come see them!â
Lucas smiled. âDid they know about you?â
Laylaâs tears streamed down her face. âRemember when I told you that I get birthday cards from Brenda in July? Itâs been from them. Nick just told them the wrong month.â
âBecause heâs a fucking asshole prick face.â
âI guess they didnât want to get in trouble for sending me a card.â Layla was so happy she could barely contain herself. âWhy is my life so weird?â
Lucas chuckled, tossing his head back. âI think it got weirder the day you trespassedâ¦â
âYeah, you are a weirdo.â
âJust wait until I put that sassy mouth to better use later on, baby girl.â
âPromises, promises.â
But Lucas kept his promises, and Layla found herself on her knees in the middle of Lucasâs bedroom, his cock shoved all the way down her throat.
âIâm about to cum, baby.â He ran his hands through her hair. âCan you take me?â
Layla moaned, nodding as she held on to Lucasâs thighs for support. With one more grunt and a forceful thrust, her throat was coated in Lucasâs cum.
âDamn, you are so good at this,â Lucas panted as he pushed into her one last time and then slipped out.
âI only want to please you, Lucas. Itâs why Iâm good at it.â
Thatâs what their days were like: working together, making love, making plans, making dinnerâeverything Lucas ever wanted in a woman and a relationship.
He couldnât help but notice her slowly breaking down though. Her night terrors and his attacks were strangling them both.
Then there were the naysayers like Paul and Ron and whoever else wanted to tell them that they werenât good together. They were amazing together, and that couldnât be more of Lucas and Laylaâs truth.
Her time at the crisis center was even cut short due to Rosie. She loved Layla and thought she was a great dispatcher, but with the goings-on? She had to let her go.

âWell, if it isnât the fucking basket case.â Laurenâs voice echoed through the supermarket as Layla walked the aisles of Coleâs. âYa know, Lucas Foster is one hot motherfucker, but he has cracked you, baby.â
âGo to hell, Lauren. You donât know shit about me.â
Laurenâs mouth widened to say something else, but she caught sight of Lucas and Jefferson and continued on.
Lucas had heard it all. Maybe Lauren was right. Maybeâ¦
Layla turned around and rushed to him. âDonât.â
âDonât what?â Lucas said, embracing her as Jefferson gave them their space.
âDonât believe them.â
It was hard not to. Maybe he really was her demon.

For her birthday, Lucas, Ron, and Shelly surprised her with something sheâd never forget. Her first meeting with her siblings.
Before Lucas led her to the house, he pulled out a box and breathed in deeply.
âThis isnât an engagement ring, so donât slap me, but it is a promise ring because youâre the cheesiest person I know.â Lucas handed her the box with a ring inside, their birthstones intertwined with an infinity symbol.
âOh, Lucas! I love it! Thank you so much.â She handed it to him. âPut it on me?â
His hands were shaking when he slipped it on her finger.
âItâs beautiful.â
âLike you, baby girl, but thatâs not all,â Lucas said, escorting her from his truck. âNow close your eyes.â
Layla had been writing and calling her siblings for a few weeks, receiving pictures online of them, and she had sent pictures of herself and Dinah.
She didnât want to wait to meet them, but she knew all too well about jumping on something so special, yet so touchy.
âMy surprise is in my parentsâ house?â
Lucas led her into the foyer. The foster parents of Bea and Ben were standing near the children, grinning from ear to ear. Bea was already crying, and Ben was wringing his hands.
Ron and Shelly were off to the side with Dinah and Yeehaw.
âOkay, baby girl, open those beautiful blues!â
âOh my goodness!!!!â Layla didnât know who to run to first, but all three of them somehow met in the middle, embracing and crying rivers of joy. âOh my goodness!â Layla kept saying through her tears.
âGood job, Lucas, ole boy.â Ron patted Lucas on the back as they stood back watching and taking pictures of the reunion from a distance.
âI canât believe it!â Layla sobbed. âI justâI love you both so much already.â
And they loved her. There was a sense of belonging when the three of them were together, even though they had an age gap.
âThis is the best birthday ever!â

Lucas decided all he wanted to do was be with her on his birthday, so they went fishing, dogs in tow, and on a picnic.
Layla had made him a coconut fudge cake and had bought him some new chaps, a leather jacket, and a new motorcycle helmet, all imprinted with their memories: his porch, Vegas, Coleâs, the pasture, and even the VFW. She had even had someone print a pair of boxing gloves on the sides.
They made love all night long and, once spent from all of the romance, they showered and headed to bed.
Layla rolled over, finding Lucasâs bedside cold. She saw him at the foot of the bed, and then he started mumbling to himself.
âLucasâ¦â Layla watched as Lucas paced the room, currently not available, as he was having an attack. âDarling, where are you? Where have you gone?â
âThere⦠Iâm thereâ¦â
