I paced the hall, Gordain watching me.
âIt doesnât add up,â I grumbled. âThe motivation. Somethingâs not right.â
âWhatâs not right?â Elise said from the top of the stairs.
Just having her in my sight soothed me. âIâve been trying to make a connection between all the events that happened. We know your mother is behind the blackmail, but why would she care about ye going onstage with Leo? She already had a solution for ye and your ex, and any publicity, good or bad, would boost the film. Theyâd move over it and on, with ye pacified and still earning for her. The man who tried to stop your performance was sent by someone else, Iâm almost certain.â
She descended carefully, a hand to the banister, but her gaze inward. âYouâre right. Mom didnât know I was at the festival, or care when I told her about it. Why didnât I think of this?â
So much had happened, it was all such a tangled mess.
I continued my line of thinking. âThat guard at the first festival was paid off to spy on ye and then threaten ye. The person who did that had to know where ye were.â
Elise blinked hard, reaching the bottom of the stairs. âMomâs at Roryâs house looking for me.â
At Maxâs exclamation, she waved him down.
âDonât worry, Rory fled to a friendâs place. My point is she doesnât know where I am.â
I rubbed my hands together, trying hard to make sense of my intuition. âThen who did at that point? Or better still, who had the most to lose from your performance?â
âMy ex-boyfriend, but howâ¦?â
âCould he have tracked your phone?â
Her jaw dropped. âMaybe. God, yes. I had my password written down in my notebook, and Iâve never changed it because no one knew it. Derrenâs been tracking me all this time?â
âIt adds up. He wouldâve had the money to pay off the agency who hired the guard. He really didnae want ye to spill what heâd done.â
She wilted, yet another revelation rocking her. âWell, that shipâs sailed in my report to the police. Shit, which my blackmailer knew about. Could they be working together?â
I played it through. âThe email didnât ask ye to retract the interview. Only to return to California. Your Ma focused on the only point that counts. Ye spearheading the movie campaign. Being where the money is. So I dinna think so. Derren is on his own.â
With shaking fingers, Elise held out her phone. âPlus Momâs in Temecula, so he isnât sharing information the other way, even if he knows exactly where I am. What do I do with this? Should I smash it up?â
Gordain gave a sharp shake of his head. âYouâre staying here in the castle, both of ye. If your ex-boyfriend was willing to pay someone to hurt ye to prevent the stage performance, heâll lose his shite when he finds out about the police report. Assuming your conclusions are correct. I recommend ye stick with the plan. Derren canât touch ye here. Let the pieces fall where they will. In a little over a day, it will be over and done with. Your message will be out there, and they willnae be able to do anything about it.â
Elise looked to me. âDo you agree?â
âI do. Ye cannae back down now. Weâve got ye.â
She took a shaky breath. âFirst, I need to draw Mom away from Rory.â
âYour credit card statement will do that when the flights register,â Gordain pointed out.
âIâll do something sooner. Then set up my video. Because Iâm going to do this. Let them try and stop me.â She set her jaw. âIâll ring Janelle and tell her exactly where I am. That will get back to my mom fast. I doubt sheâll come here, but itâs a possibility.â
I loved this, the ability to provide her with family and support. Gordain and I exchanged an impressed nod, and Elise got on with calling her manager.
In short sentences, she told the woman she was in Scotland and had no intention of leaving. Then in the midst of a squawking reply, Elise hung up.
She dusted off her hands and, with the help of Viola, settled down to write a list of all she wanted to cover in her interview exposé.
She was handling this so well, as cool as a queen. If only I had her calmness.
Unable to sit still, I worked with Gordain in his office, surrounded by computers and equipment, while he tried to corroborate my idea of Derren tracking Elise.
âGot it.â He tapped the screen. âElise stopped using this email account, but itâs the one attached to her phone ID. It notified her that someone else had logged on a few times, but she obviously didnât see it.â
Sheâd given us access to her systems, and it was the work of a moment to change passwords and block the fucker out. And yet still, it wasnât enough.
âI want to fucking break him,â I uttered to my uncle. âThe man is scum for the way he treated her. He sent a man to hurt her. I bet it was him who led to the break-in at the La Jolla place, too.â
He dipped his head in understanding. âWith any luck, the wee chat she had with the police will uncover that. She can add this to the report.â He lifted his chin, regarding me. âNow youâre starting to see this side of the business, beyond the role of crowd control, does it interest ye more? I do this for love, and because I cannae bear the thought of my family at risk when all they want to do is earn a living, in Leoâs case, or be happy, in Violaâs. What happens when Elise goes back to work? I assume youâre together now for good.â
There was no hesitation on my part. âIâll be there for her. If she wants me, Iâll be the one doing what ye do. Or at least helping. I know my limitations.â
Gordain tapped his desk. âThen youâll take the job with me.â
He hadnât posed it as a question because he already knew my mind.
âIf it means protecting her, Iâll do it. Hell, Iâll enjoy it.â
A hard knock came at the door, and Gordain called out for them to enter. Max stood in the frame. His gaze flicked between us.
âI need a word,â he said, settling on me.
Gordain waved me away, and I strode with Max into the hall.
At the archway to the hall, he stopped me. On the sofas, Elise, Viola, and Leo talked, Violaâs ma now home and with Baby G.
âIâm worried about Rory,â Max said.
âWhy?â
âI sent her a message to check in, and she replied that sheâs travelling somewhere. Not hiding out like she told Elise.â
âDidnae know the two of ye were in contact.â
âYeah, well.â He scrubbed over his auburn hair, his gaze darting away. âSheâs up to something.â
I indicated to the phone in his hand. âCall her.â
He did, and the lass answered right away. âHey, handsome.â
âWhat are ye doing? Youâre on loudspeaker. Cameronâs here, too, by the way.â
Rory gave a laugh. âCameron, take care of Elise. Sheâs special. And delicate.â
âI will,â I told her. âNow where are ye?â
âMy mom called me to say Eliseâs mom had left abruptly.â
She mustâve got the message from Janelle.
âApparently she got angry, yelled a lot, and said she was heading to San Diego. So I borrowed a car and am tailing her.â
âWhy?â Max bit out.
âI want to help. Thereâs only one reason for her to go to San D.â
âWhich isâ¦?â I prompted.
âOur father lived there, and Eliseâs mom despised him far more than we knew. Mom told me. I left after her but Iâm nearing Dadâs place now and I bet thatâs where she went. Hold up. Turning.â
âElise,â I called. âYou need to hear this.â
She climbed from the couch and joined us.
âRory tailed your ma to San Diego.â
âShe did what?â
Roryâs voice returned. She drew a hard breath then choked out, âElise, can you hear me? Oh God. Itâs bad. I half suspectedâ¦â
âWhat? Whatâs happened?â
âDadâs house has smoke billowing from the windows. Thereâs two engines outside. Fire crew everywhere. Wait, Iâll get closer.â
Elise grabbed my arm. âNo! Stay away. Get back in the car.â She peeked at me. âChristina still lived there, and her boyfriend. Oh God. Her baby.â
âFuck.â Rory coughed. âThe doorâs open. Theyâre leading two people out.â
âA blonde woman and a slim man?â
âYes.â
Elise slumped against me. âMom set fire to Dadâs house. A final act of revenge even though heâs been gone for so long. Thatâs a message to me, right? Sheâs lost it.â
Max snapped the phone to his mouth. âGet the hell away, Aurora. Now.â
âSheesh. Bossy,â she replied. âFine. Iâm in the car, doors locked.â
âAnd thereâs no one hiding in the back?â he added.
âNope. Weâre good.â
âGo to the airport. Get on a plane and come here,â Elise begged. âIâll arrange a ticket. Just donât get hurt. I couldnât bear it.â
Rory hummed over the thought, but at Eliseâs begging agreed.
Now we had a new person to collect and keep safe. I was in my element. Gordain had been right. This was for me. And only another reason why I was perfect for Elise.
