M e h r b a n o
A new day, a new beginning.
Today's sunrise was very special to me. I kept standing at the hostel's top floor with my eyes fixed in the direction of the sun. It was heartwarming to stand there in hope that today would be different from the past.
I had breakfast with my roommate in the dining area where I met some of her friends. They met nicely and welcomed me warmly. It was my first day here and I had already met with kindness.
It filled my heart with warmth.
I changed into a formal suit I loved. It's color is red. The color of love and the most beautiful flower. I did minimal makeup which gave an instant glow to my dull face.
I loved doing makeup and from now on I would do it everyday. A little smile lingered on my lips as I saw my reflection in the mirror.
I walked from the hostel building to the main road. It just took me three minutes, from there I rode on the bus which took me to the main markaz of a renowned sector. It wasn't far from my hostel.
For the first time in my life, I traveled alone.
When mama was alive, I used to travel with her in the local buses but she was always there to protect me. After getting married, I never travelled alone without Ehan. It was never needed anyway. He would take me shopping and outings on his own without me asking for anything.
"Jab main hoon to koi zaroorat nahi hy akele jane ki. Shehar ke halaat ache nahi hain" His protective voice echoed around me.
(When I am there for you then there is no need to go alone. City isn't safe for woman)
Now, I didn't have any of them to protect me.
It's only myself now.
I glanced at the tall building in front of me. It was a fancy building and had many floors. The board says Sama's boutique and I realized it's one of the upscale retail stores in the city.
Right there, looking myself into the mirror I realized what I was wearing.
"Here! This is perfect" Ehan showed me a dress.
"You like it?" I asked him.
I didn't like the dress but if he liked it I am gonna buy this. Whatever please him I am gonna do that.
"Yes" He nodded, placing the dress at my front. We were standing in front of the mirror in a clothing store.
"You will look beautiful in it!" He leaned down at my ear and whispered.
I turned my face to him and passed a genuine smile. I loved every time he would compliment me because it was always rare.
He held my hand for a moment but didn't say anything. His eyes had something but his lips were silent as always.
I loved this dress after that. I have forgotten about him buying it for me but now looking into the mirror saddens me.
Will I ever be able to remove him from my head?
Because every other thing reminds me of the time I had spent with him. His words, his not so silent eyes stay with me. I want to forget him completely but I am not able to.
I would hard to pretend it doesn't affect me anymore but only my heart know what it's feeling.
I released a long sigh and walked into the building with firm steps.
Inside, many customers were choosing the articles they wanted to buy. A few staff members were present around them for assistance.
I went to the reception and asked for Sama Jahangir. The man at the reception asked me a few questions and guided me to the left at the back.
The lift stopped at the desired floor, walking out of it I entered into my dreamland. The floor had fashion studios.
A girl working at a desk looked up at me.
"You are here to meet Madam Sama?" She asked, the man at the reception must have informed her.
"Yes" I nodded.
"Come with me" She passed a small smile and took me to an office. She knocked at the door and I followed her into the room.
"Madam! She is the girl Madam Farhanda was talking about" She told the woman sitting on the revolving chair behind the desk.
I gazed her. She was a classy woman in her fifties. The most prominent thing in her appearance was her bob cut hair. Her personality was charismatic just as K wanted for myself once in the past.
"Okay" The girl left us alone in the room.
"Have a seat!" Madam Sama said.
I forwarded my file to her.
"Mehrbano! Such a nice name" She said reading the file and commented on my CV. I had done two internships in the renowned clothing brands.
"Darling! this not how we select our employees but as Farhanda asked me a favor I couldn't say no to her. She is like a sister to me. So just on her request you will be working here.
As for now you will assist our fashion designer Sameera. It will also benefit you professionally because without any prior experience it's difficult to get designing jobs. I like to give fresh graduates a chance to prove themselves. I am giving one to you as well. I hope you won't disappoint Farhanda!" She said strictly.
"I will try my best ma'am!" I replied confidently.
Later after doing some paperwork, I was working in the studio with a woman named Sameera.
"How does it look?" She asked my opinion, when she moved away from the mannequine she was working on earlier.
"Beautiful" I replied watching the beautiful dress she designed.
"Girl! You have been with me for three hours and you have just spoken a few words only" She rolled her eyes at me.
"I don't talk much" I smiled at her awkwardly, and defended myself.
"That's not how it works, especially around me. You have to speak up so that the next person knows everything is going well. This kind of job demands good communication skills Mehrbano!" She said with a little smile this time.
"You are right. I will try to improve myself" I nodded.
"Good. Now, get the samples from Afsheen. We have to complete the sketches today. The client wants the dress by this weekend" She said walking to her desk.
I walked around the studio in search of a woman named Afsheen. I got the samples and walked back to my desk. People were working efficiently at their places.
This is my workplace now. I thought excitedly, in my excitement I forgot to look straight and bumped into someone. The file in my hand went straight on the floor, pages scattered here and there.
"Ya khuda" The man I bumped into, whispered in amazement.
I moved behind instantly and looked up to face him. He was a young man in his late twenties. His personality was charismatic, eyes were dark in color, which looked at me for an answer.
"I wasn't looking straight. I am so sorry!" I mumbled.
His eyes softened on my words and lips curled into a little smile. His eyes were fixed at my face.
"Zaydan!" Someone called him from the back.
He was Zaydan Jahangir, the only son of the owner of this boutique and my boss.
