Chapter 52 – Like Glass (Devin Rosario POV) Pt.2

"I cannot believe that Javier left and didn't even warn us," Taylor says fuming as we leave Oregon, crossing into Nevada. Keeping one eye on the road I turn to face her with a bit of doubtfulness in my eyes.

"Really?" Because I could. I mean he was devoted to Talia. He might love Taylor and I, but Javier never once pushed us or really inquired about our doings with Samson and Brennan. Sure he wanted to know we were happy, but that's as far as he delved into our private relationships.

He also never encouraged Samson and Taylor to become a couple, only focusing on his own relationship with Talia which was why I sort of paid more attention. No one made me reassure Taylor, but it just seemed as though Samson and her were made for one another.

I had stopped boosting that goal, but Samson leaving his car for us seemed like such a whiplash moment. He had said that he wanted nothing to do with Taylor, but he left his car for her, us to get out of Bend safely?

It was such a lead Taylor on move in my eyes but maybe Taylor and I weren't reading too much into Samson's feelings.

He had them.

He might not be ready for a relationship with Taylor, heck he might just want to be her friend.

"Are you..." I bite my lip as Taylor tinkered around on my laptop. "Am I what?"

Sighing, I move around in my seat, just stiff. "We cannot be like we were before in Bend. I – I cannot be the way I was Taylor," I said softly, voice shaking but after three plus hours of driving, all I had was my thoughts and the occasional conversation with Taylor.

"I really love Brennan, and if Samson does not want a relationship with you Taylor, we cannot hound him like before. If he just wants to be your friend, is that going – will that be enough?" I realize as the car toots, alerting us that we needed to find a gas station immediately that this was a conversation that we should have had way back in Bend.

"He left the car so we'd get out safely. Brennan knows you know where the next locations are going to be. I mean you have them all here," she waves to my laptop screen.

I nod, reading the sign on the side of the road as I pass it.

Exit.

Three images underneath the bold white words.

"Okay but what if he did leave the car not for you as a romantic gesture? But saying... she's my friend, I don't want her to get trapped in Bend?"

She's silent for a minute before she finally closes my laptop, turning her body to face me.

"Samson and I... I know he has feelings for me Devin. I've handled everything badly, but once we catch up to them, I'm just going to play things cool. Before, I was not myself around him, and that's what he wants, for me to be me. I have no reason to pretend anymore..."

I bite my lip to keep the words that are on the tip of my tongue from coming out, just exhaling instead.

"And you know, if he'd just lower his inhibitions," she says forcing me to dart my eyes from the road to her, and back. "I don't know what he see's in her," she doesn't say Faith's name but I do not need her too.

"If he had just come to the Halloween party, I'm sure our plan would have worked. He'd drink a little and just be so much more relaxed-" my phone chirps, cutting her off, but when she picks it up from the middle console without answering, any hope that it was Brennan somehow reaching out to me is dashed.

"It's dad," she says quietly, before declining the call and placing it back where it was between us. Puffing out the air from inside, I slow down as I merge to the exit lane going from sixty to twenty-five as we take the turn.

Driving vigilantly, I remain silent for the sharp curve until I right the car going to a stop at the sign.

"Taylor, I," I shake my head, reading the signs to lead to the gas station. Impossible to miss the gas station ahead, I pull into one of the spots at the pumps, surveying the area. Not overly packed, but I do note five other cars besides my own, and a few people inside the lit store of the gas station.

Reaching forward after she's unclipped her seat belt, Taylor reaches for the money from the middle console, grabbing one hundred dollar bill from the stack.

"Okay, I'll pay and get us a few things, as well, and you pump," she instructions before jumping from the car, closing the door behind her, before righting herself, and stretching out her limbs. I turn the car off, but remain inside, rubbing my face roughly and shaking my head in frustration.

When I finally do leave the car, I've pumped the gas and watched Taylor head over to the washroom with a key attached to a two by five inch wooden rectangle. A bag of goods with her as well.

Keys in my hand, doors locked I go inside walking and ready to buy something to eat, but hold off because I saw Taylor with a fairly large filled bag. Heading outside, the doorbell chimes and the chilled air nothing compared to what we left back in Bend bleeds through my sweater.

Head down, I go to knock on the door listening not just to Taylor or in the area I'm in. Everywhere, unsure that we had somehow stopped where there were packs or maybe even another Den, though I do not recall one being in the Northern part of Nevada.

So I keep lookout, glancing over my shoulder, as there is very little light near this part of the gas station.

"No – no they left Devin and I in Bend," I hear Taylor saying muffled. "No, not because they found out that I tampered with the plane," she stops speaking, but when she starts again, I take a step away from the closed door.

"No they have no idea that I caused the crash, they left us behind because someone found the money I was hiding. Under pressure I said I stole-" eyes wide I back away from the door, confused, heart pounding in my chest, panting as I shook.

She caused – the plane – the – I – Taylor.

I sway slightly on my feet, my legs ready to go to jelly, weak beneath me but once I'm eight feet from the washroom door, I turn back to the car, getting in quickly. My heart pounding, racing, knowing I had not heard wrong, I flick the key in the ignition.

And without even having my seatbelt on, I move to car into drive and quickly pull out from the gas station, leaving Taylor behind. My vision blurring as tears drip down my face and my breathing coming out choppily, my leg still shaking as it presses down on the gas pedal.

Oh god, what did she do?
