chapter 14

The attorney blew in like a tornado. Brian Thought. Her name was Dayna Tyler.. she was tall and slim she had long brown hair and big blue eyes.

"Harassing good citizens again.Lieutenant?" she asked Looking at Phil.She turned to Brian and said"Who are you?

"Brian Ful--

"He is former special agent Brian Fuller with the FBI."

"Former? she asked "Who is he now?"

"I asked him to consult with me. He has knowledge of a related case Phil answered."Could we talk about the case now?"

"Sure obstruction of justice? what kind of charge is that?"

"Its a charge to shake the woman into identifying a man calling her on her phone Phil said."A man we think committed a murder 9 years ago and might be at it again."

She straightened. Hadn't expected that Brian thought.

"Tell me." she said.

Brian told her first of Gloria Michaels, Then Phil laid out the dead girl in Seattle and the missing Denver woman and their phones being used to call Sarra.

"Did my client admit to talking to anyone?"

"she claims they were obscene phone calls."

She rolled her eyes "You guys are incred-------

"Whoa there is more. Phil said Sarra got another call a few hours ago from the cell phone belonging to a third woman whose family says she disappeared this morning in Omaha we got the recording of that call."

"Shit" Dayna said. she drew a breath through her nose." Have you told Sarra this man is a murderer?"

"Not yet." Phil said.

"And why is that?" afraid of another lawsuit she looked back and fourth between them a smug look on her face. "You are not sure this caller murdered anyone at all are you?" Phil opened his mouth but she held up a hand."The Seattle woman's phone was never found. so anyone could of used it and what about the Denver woman? You are not even sure she is a victim of foul play."

"That is bull shit," Brian said but Phil cut in.

"Maybe not"

"What?" Brian asked and Phil looked at the floor.

"A little while ago Denver FBI got Thelma cox's support group counselor talking." Phil said "The day she disappeared Cox had learned the cancer wan't gone.

She was despondent, talking about not wanting her son to have to deal with her care and all that."

"Ah man." Brian said.

"so Dayna said."the counselor believes she might have run off or killed herself.?"

"And wiped down her own fucking car.? Brian shot back"Made a phone call to same woman as Jessica Davis?'

Daynna was undaunted."And let me guess the omaha woman isn't officially missing You said she dissapered this morning."

"She skipped an appt. that's all Phil said. But her family insist that is not like her."He suddenly looked beat. People thought that cops had ulcers from criminals they got them from attorneys.

Of course If Brian was being totally honest the information about The Denver woman  threw him for a loop, too. Maybe they didn't really have 2 missing woman. Maybe they had some woman with cancer who ran away and another who simply forgot about a hair apt. and scared her family half to death. Maybe some random stranger who made random calls to Sarra Jane. And maybe all the likenesses between the murders of Gloria Michaels and Jessica Davis was figments of Brian's imagination.

And maybe pigs fly..

"Even if you dismiss the two missing women what about my case?" Brian asked "There are too many similarities between Gloria michaels and Jessica Davis?"

"Like what?"

He ticked them off and Dayna listened, then went silent for a long long moment. Finally she squared off to Brian "And based on those similarities has the DA reopened that case? The FBI?"

Brian glared

"That is what I thought." She picked up her briefcase "Excuse me gentlemen i would like to speak to my client now.:"

Brian watched her disappear into the interview room frowning at her back. when the door closed, he turned to Phil"She didn't ask the logical question."

"Huh?"

"You told her we had a recording of the last call made to Sarra. Dayna didn't ask what was on it."

ACrease burrowed between Phil's eyes"You think she already knows?"

"I don't know how she could we have been on Sarra since before the call came" A thought hit."Unless Sarra had already told her about the calls."

Phil rubbed a hand over his face."If that is the case  then she has known for a while, she was in trouble. otherwise why bother with a lawyer?"

Brian thought about it and came up with nothing. There was a reason Sarra was lying and Dayna seemed to have heads up about the calls. But there was also a reason Sarra went around every corner with her fist balled up ready for a fight.

"I barely touched Sarra today and she just about beat me up. Brian said.

"What?"

"I am beginning to think she is scared, You saw the way she was shaking in there talking to you. It was like she was on crack or something."

"Then why doesn't she tell us?"

"Maybe she is more scared of him than us.Maybe he has something on her."

"Or....You think she might be in love with him?"

The image of Sarra loving a faceless murderer drove a knife through Brandon's gut. He remembered too well what a woman would do to protect a man she cared about.

Anything.

"We have to find out how this guy's pushing Sarra's buttons. Tap her phone."

Phil Blinked."I know you just didn't say that." He said heading for his office.

"Why not?"

"Why not?" Phil moved faster "Patriot act aside Brian police departments are queasy about tapping personal phone lines.

"The sentry isn't."

Phil stuck his fingers in his ears.and rounded the corner. he began to hum.

"The sentry taps everyone it guards, secure all lines to and from."

"I can't hear you."

"Ive still got some connections there."

"She has lawyer-ed up" Phil said between humming.

"I will keep the police department out of it."

Phil got to his office door looked around to see if anyone was listening and stopped. he pulled his fingers from his ears. "Out of what?" Did you say something.?"

"Right so it is settled."Brian looked at his watch.

"what are you going to do about Abby?"

Phil already had his Rolex out dialing. He put the phone on speaker and a woman with a smokers voice answered "Sammy Barnes child protective services."

"Sammy how is my favorite cps worker?"

Phil. I paid off those parking tickets with the due kids, remember? A crew of 7 and you busting my chops to keep them together. Not an easy thing to do by the way."

"But you are a resident miracle worker."

"And you are a resident shit talker. What do you want?"

"I have a mom in custody but not for long. I need to cover her kid for a little while."

"File the papers and we will send someone."

"Man there is no sense in that  It will be only for a few hours. maybe not even that."

"You are suggesting?.....

"Nancy will watch her no need for anything formal. You come with me to pick her up. we will swing by the house and before you know it her mom show's up."

"so you don;t want the daughter in the system. but you don;t wanna be charged with kidnapping?"

"I'm funny that way."

silence."Meet me down stairs and Phil you owe me. again."

"Next time you are in jail, I'll arrange for the special menu."
