Chapter 5: The Path to the Source

The van driver scratched his head, staring at the empty stretch of road by Burnham Park where the Watcher crew was supposed to meet him. The rented vehicle idled softly, its presence out of place amidst the fading hustle of Baguio's evening streets. He muttered to himself, perplexed, "Where'd they go?" Shaking his head, he climbed back into the vehicle, leaving behind a spot now eerily quiet.

Meanwhile, miles away, a rickety taxi slowed to a halt at the edge of a forest. The engine gave a final sputter before dying, leaving the crew in a suffocating silence. Ryan, Shane, Producer Steven Lim, and the rest of the Watcher crew exchanged uneasy glances as they peered out the windows. Before them stretched a narrow dirt path, framed by trees so thick their branches intertwined high above, forming a canopy that allowed only slivers of moonlight to filter through.

The driver, silent for most of the journey, finally turned to them. His face was obscured in shadow, save for his gleaming eyes in the rearview mirror. When he spoke, his voice was low and deliberate, as though each word carried weight.

"You've reached the spot," he said. "The path ahead is narrow, but it's the safest way. Once you start walking, you might feel... something. It's the forest-it watches, listens. Go slow. Don't rush. And remember, not everything you see is real. But if you find what you're looking for..." He paused, as if searching for the right words. "It's worth it. Good luck."

Without another word, he turned off the ignition, leaving the crew in deafening stillness. He didn't wait for a response. He gave a slight nod and, with a gravelly cough from the engine, drove off, leaving them standing at the forest's edge.

The crew exited the taxi hesitantly. The crunch of their boots on loose gravel felt almost intrusive against the profound quiet of the forest. Ryan broke the silence with a shaky chuckle.

"Cool, so we're on our own now," Shane muttered, glancing nervously at the looming trees. "And we got a 'good luck' from Creepy Taxi Guy. This is gonna end well."

Ryan smirked, though his shoulders were tense. "Hey, we didn't fly all the way to Baguio to chicken out now. We're here for answers. Let's just... stay sharp, alright?"

Steven adjusted the camera slung across his chest, his expression serious. "This place feels... alive. I don't think we're just walking into a forest. It's like it's waiting for us."

The group exchanged uneasy glances before stepping onto the dirt path.

The forest seemed to close in around them as they walked. The air was heavy, thick with the earthy scent of damp moss and decaying leaves. The path twisted and turned, its uneven surface forcing them to tread carefully. Each step felt deliberate, as though the forest demanded respect.

The occasional rustle in the undergrowth made them pause, their breaths catching. Were those animals, or... something else? Shadows moved in their peripheral vision, too fluid and deliberate to be tricks of the light. The deeper they went, the more oppressive the atmosphere became, as if the forest itself was aware of their presence.

After what felt like hours, they stumbled into a clearing. Moonlight spilled through the breaks in the canopy, illuminating a small shrine nestled against a backdrop of ancient foliage. The shrine was unassuming yet intricate. Its wooden frame, worn smooth by time, was adorned with offerings-flowers, incense sticks reduced to ashes, coins, and trinkets that glimmered faintly under the moonlight. Miniature wooden statues crowded its base, some resembling animals, others human figures, their designs both simple and hauntingly intricate.

Shane exhaled sharply, breaking the silence. "This place... it's something else. Look at all this. People have been coming here for generations."

Ryan stepped closer, his voice quiet with reverence. "It's like stepping back in time. Everything feels preserved, untouched. It's ancient, but... it feels alive."

Steven adjusted his camera, his hands trembling slightly. "This is more than just a shrine. There's history here. And not just history-something still... present."

Their attention was drawn to the massive tree towering behind the shrine. Its trunk was gnarled and thick, its bark weathered by centuries of storms and sunlight. Its roots sprawled outward, some half-buried, others breaking through the earth in twisting, serpentine patterns. Old ropes hung from its branches and large thick ropes also bind the trunk of the tree, frayed and faded, their knots intricate, as though tied with sacred intent.

A small shrine was also placed just near the tree.

The air shifted. A subtle vibration hummed beneath their feet, an unspoken acknowledgment from the tree itself.

Shane approached cautiously, his voice hushed. "This thing is massive. It's like... it's breathing. It doesn't feel threatening, though. It feels... like it's welcoming us."

Ryan, eyes fixed on the tree, nodded slowly. "I've read about sacred trees like this. In a lot of cultures, they're seen as bridges-links between the physical and spiritual worlds. Judging by what we're seeing here... this tree isn't just a tree. It's something much more."

Steven moved closer to the shrine, his camera capturing every detail. "Look at these offerings," he said, his voice tinged with awe. "Flowers, coins... even the way the ropes are tied. People still come here. This isn't just a relic-it's alive in every sense of the word."

Near the shrine, Shane noticed scraps of parchment covered in symbols and prayers. He held one up, his brow furrowing. "These are... prayers, right? I can't read the language, but it feels... sacred. Like these people believed in this tree's power. Still do."

Ryan adjusted his camera, his expression thoughtful. "If the stories are true, and this tree really is a conduit... then this is the heart of it. Whatever happens next, it's going to happen here."

The crew moved with deliberate care, setting up their equipment as though entering a sacred space. The forest seemed to hold its breath, the ropes hanging from the tree swaying gently despite the still air.

As Ryan spoke into the microphone, his voice steady but laced with awe, the world around them grew quieter still. The energy of the place was palpable, a silent watcher observing their every move.

"This is it," Ryan said softly. "This is what we came for. Let's see if this sacred tree has a story to tell."

And as they began their investigation, the forest seemed to come alive-not with sound, but with a presence so ancient, so immense, it defied comprehension. The sacred tree loomed above them, a guardian of secrets older than time.
