Episode 6: The Sacred Shrine and the Mysterious Encounter
The forest around the Sacred Tree seemed to breathe with life, every rustling leaf and distant chirp of a cicada adding to the growing sense of unease. The Watcher team, their footsteps muted on the moss-covered ground, worked in practiced silence. Equipment beeped and flickered, casting faint glows into the encroaching darkness. A thin mist crept through the underbrush, curling around their legs like curious fingers.
Ryan crouched beside the Spirit Box, his hands steady despite the pounding of his heart. The device emitted its usual static crackle, but suddenly, a single word cut through the noise:
"Stay..."
The clarity of the voice froze him in place. His wide eyes darted to Shane, who was adjusting his flashlight. "Shane," Ryan whispered, his voice taut with excitement. "It just said 'stay.' Clear as day. Did you hear that?"
Shane paused, the beam of his flashlight trembling slightly as he glanced over. "Are you serious?" His usual smirk faded, replaced by a furrowed brow. He crouched beside Ryan, leaning in close to the Spirit Box.
"Listen," Ryan urged, motioning to the device.
The static surged again, then ebbed. Another faint whisper emerged, more distinct this time: "Come..."
Shane's skeptical mask cracked, replaced by something approaching wonder. "Okay," he muttered, his voice barely audible. "This is... different."
Steven, monitoring the EMF meter nearby, looked up. The device's needle remained eerily steady, a stark contrast to the fluctuating activity they'd observed earlier. "It's not spiking," he said, almost to himself. "It's... calm. Like whatever's here is choosing to let us in."
The atmosphere around them had shifted subtly but unmistakably. The oppressive weight that had been pressing on their shoulders all night lifted, replaced by a strange serenity. The forest no longer felt menacing-it felt alive, as if they were being observed by something ancient and patient.
"This is it," Ryan whispered, his voice trembling with excitement. "This is real evidence. Something wants us to follow."
Before they could discuss their next move, Josh, a member from the camera crew, broke the silence. His voice was hushed but urgent. "Guys... there's something ahead. Look."
All heads turned to where she was pointing. Through the mist, a structure emerged, half-shrouded by the towering trees. It was a house, its silhouette stark against the faint light of the setting sun.
"Wait a second," Shane murmured, stepping closer for a better look.
The house was a peculiar blend of eras. Its red-tiled roof sloped gently, weathered with age but intact. Rough-hewn timber walls were interspersed with patches of stone, and arched windows with intricate metalwork gleamed faintly in the fading light. The porch was flanked by columns that seemed too ornate for such a secluded place, their carved surfaces telling stories of a bygone era.
"This is... bizarre," Shane said, his voice laced with awe. "It doesn't belong here. It looks like something out of a history book."
Ryan adjusted his camera, zooming in on the structure. "It's out of place, but... it's not abandned. Look at those windows-clean. Someone's living here."
As if to confirm his observation, the distant hum of a tricycle's engine reached their ears, growing louder as it approached. The vehicle came into view moments later, its headlight cutting through the mist. It pulled up to the house, and a figure stepped out.
The woman moved with effortless grace, her light pinkish-white dress fluttering in the gentle breeze. A white hat perched elegantly on her head, and in her hands, she carried a woven basket filled with what appeared to be groceries and the other...a Starbucks cup. She paid the tricycle driver with a soft smile, her movements deliberate and unhurried.
Ryan's breath caught in his throat. "No way," he whispered, lowering his camera slightly.
Shane glanced at him, frowning. "What?" before also noticing the cup." You've got to be kidding..."
Ryan gestured toward the woman, who was now walking toward the house. "That's her. that's the woman we've seen before. At Starbucks, and then again at Burnham Park. She looks exactly the same."
Shane's eyes widened. "No way... And now she's just... here?"
Ryan nodded, his mind racing. "She's real. Not a ghost. She looks... normal."
Shane added" And that Starbucks cup...Don't tell me that this is a product placement."
The team stood frozen, their eyes glued to the woman as she reached the porch. She paused, her head tilting slightly as if sensing their presence. Then, she turned.
Her gaze locked onto Ryan's, and a small, knowing smile spread across her lips. It wasn't a smile of surprise or discomfort-it was a smile of recognition.
Shane muttered under his breath, "Okay, that's officially creepy."
The woman took a step toward them, her posture relaxed, her expression warm. Her voice, when she spoke, was light and playful, yet carried an undertone of authority. "You're not lost, are you?"
Ryan swallowed hard, stepping forward cautiously. "Uh... no. We're, uh, investigating. The Tree and the area around it. We didn't mean to intrude."
Her smile widened slightly, and she nodded. "I know why you're here. It's alright. Curious minds are always welcome." She glanced at the house behind her. "Would you like to come in? It's not much, but it's comfortable."
The team exchanged nervous glances. Steven finally broke the silence. "We don't want to impose..."
The woman laughed softly, a melodic sound that seemed to echo in the still air. "You're not imposing. Besides, I think you've come this far for a reason. Answers are best found when you're willing to step inside."
Shane, ever the joker, grinned nervously. "Well, when you put it like that, how can we say no? Though I should warn you, we don't handle mysteries well. We just make bad jokes and run away."
The woman's eyes twinkled with amusement. "Then you'll fit right in. Come on, before it gets too dark."
She turned and disappeared through the door, leaving it ajar. The team hesitated only for a moment before following, their cameras capturing every step.
Inside, the air was cool and fragrant, carrying the faint scent of wood smoke and something floral. The interior was a harmonious blend of rustic charm and understated elegance. Wooden beams crisscrossed the ceiling, and the walls were lined with shelves filled with books and trinkets that seemed both ancient and otherworldly.
As the door creaked shut behind them, the team couldn't shake the feeling that they had just crossed a threshold into a place where the rules of the world no longer applied.
And somewhere in the shadows, the faint sound of laughter echoed, as if the house itself was alive and delighted by their presence.
