lost cause | billie eilish2,289 words~12 min read

the wedding began and i don't have much to say about it. saylor looked beautiful as ever. her bitch looked ugly as ever.

only thing that stood out was the fact that the entire audience was paige's family and friends. the only people who were friends of saylor were the few figure skaters she's friends with that she asked to be bridesmaids.

the ceremony was going and going and i was so out of it. watching saylor hold hands with that abusive girl, knowing she wants nothing to do with her.

and she had this grin on her face that was clearly forced.

after so much talking, the officiant said "should anyone present know of any reason that this couple should not be joined in holy matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace."

i moved an inch and zoe put her hand on my leg, stopping me. "don't even think about it."

i huffed.

"you keep forgetting who you are," she whispered.

the ceremony went on and so did the torture. then it was time for them to sign the marriage license papers and i honestly just face palmed as i watched saylor sign her life away.

but after awhile, the officiant finally said "by the love that has brought you here today and by the vows you have pledged, it is my great honor to now pronounce you wife and wife. you may now share a kiss."

i just looked down cause i couldn't even watch that bullshit.

the crowd cheered and cheered for them though.

and then they continued to cheer as saylor, paige, and the rest of their bridal party exited the room. after that, they directed us to another room for the reception.

zoe and i walked into the reception hand in hand as she could sense my irritation and anxiousness. "you're good," she told me. "you're good."

the reception was what it was. saylor and paige did their first dance and shit. saylor was pretty busy running around thanking people for coming and what not so i hadn't had a chance to speak to her.

now i cant lie, the food and music and everything was fire.

but whatever.

saylor and paige were at the head table with the bridesmaids. and as we (the guest) were eating/ sitting and enjoying the atmosphere, paige stood up. she had a glass in her hand filled with liquor of course, and she wanted to give a speech.

"disclaimer," she cleared her throat. "im already like three drinks in so things might get a little slurry," she started.

saylor glanced up at her, still sitting down.

"thank you to everyone who came. and thank you to everyone who has been here with moony and i since day one."

saylor just grinned.

"anybody who knows moony and i for real, knows that we definitely bud heads," paige chuckled. "but she's my rock, and i wouldn't wanna go through life with anyone else."

everyone was in awe and i just rolled my eyes. meanwhile, saylor was giving the fakest smile ever. she's definitely over it.

"though she continues and continues to piss me off... i'll never let her leave-"

"paige," saylor cut her off, shaking her head no. "stop."

"hey!" paige called out. "bartender, can you grab me another drink? anyway, as i was saying.."

"paige," saylor said.

"you guys know moony and i were high school sweet hearts," she went on. "we were joint at the hip. and then moony really started succeeding in figure skating.. until she didn't."

then it got silent. and awkward silence.

zoe and i looked at each other with wide eyes.

"moony had lots of fails in life but i was there to pick her up from every one of them," she shrugged. "what would she do without me?" she laughed.

"okay," saylor stood up. "that's enough," she took the microphone out of paige's hand. "sit down."

"what?" paige asked in confusion. "im not wrong. here say something to the people."

saylor sighed and rolled her eyes before speaking into the microphone.

"thank you guys for coming and being in support of paige and i," she started. "some know that it has not been easy, but we made it."

then saylor took a breath.

"it's just so funny whenever paige talks about my failures in life as if she wasn't the reason for every one of them," she chuckled in the shadiest way.

but paige didn't find that funny. her face frowned up so quick that even i tensed up from nervousness.

"everyone's been asking me all night why my family isn't here," saylor continued. "well funny story-"

"moony," paige started.

"what?" she looked at her.

smart of her to test her when she know she won't do anything right now, but she still could later.

but then tatum nudged saylor. "not now."

saylor rolled her eyes before saying. "thank you again," into the mic and sitting down.

after that, the dj had to come back and fix the vibes by playing uplifting music. paige was going around mingling with everybody while saylor was at the gift table, going through them.

zoe and i had walked over to the table while saylor was opening the gifts and then she turned around. "oh my god," she laughed. "security cameras!"

tatum furrowed her eyebrows. "i didn't get that."

"but i didn't put it on my registry," saylor said in confusion. "and i only mentioned it to you."

then its like something clicked in her and she looked at me.

i just smiled and winked at her.

she mouthed the words "thank you."

but after that, she was called over to somewhere else and ran off.

i sighed as i approached tatum. "i'll never get to talk to her," i said. "and she'll probably be gone back to palm springs tomorrow."

"stop don't say that," tatum pushed my shoulder.

"am i wrong?" i rose my eyebrows.

she just shook her head. "i- i can't."

after awhile of people wanting pics with me and talking to me, quinn approached me with a smile on her face.

"popular huh?" she rose her eyebrows, joking.

"nah," i chuckled, my hands in my pockets.

"you look really nice," she told me.

"thank you," i smiled. "so do you."

"um i texted you last night," she started. "i didn't know if you got it or not."

"oh," i said as i looked down, remembering what i was doing last night. "yeah sorry i was out with saylor for her bachelorette last night. i wasn't paying attention to my phone."

"oh," she said in a tone that let me know she didn't really care. "cool."

"um yeah but tonight was really nice," i lied.

"yeah it was," she said. "so what are you doing after?"

"oh um actually i don't know. i don't have plans," i told her.

"well if you wanna hang out we ca-"

"quinn!" someone yelled.

she turned around and saylor was walking up to her. "they want you for a group photo back there," she pointed.

"but i don't see-"

"you will when you walk over there," saylor cut her off.

the look on saylor's face was really hot, seeing how possessive she was being over me.

quinn then squinted at her, and saylor gave her a glare. quinn just rolled her eyes and told me "i'll be right back," before walking off.

saylor turned to me and squinted for a second.

"what?" i laughed nervously.

"stay away from her," she told me.

"why?" i asked.

"not the girl you want," she shook her head. "trust me."

"jealous much?" i rose my eyebrows.

"hey, if you wanna talk to one of paige's close friends then be my guest-"

"nope never mind," i quickly replied, making us both laugh.

"thank you for coming," she told me. "means a lot."

"i need you to know that i'll always show up for you saylor," i assured her.

she nodded. "i know that."

then she looked back at paige who was looking at us from afar. and she turned back to me, just very nervous.

"um i gotta go now," she said.

"wait saylor are you mov-"

"moony!" paige called.

saylor looked back at her again before turning back to me and hugging me tightly.

"i love you, billie."

my eyes widened, and i was in pure shock. but before i could say anything back, she broke the hug and walked away quickly.

- saylor's pov -

i had left the wedding before paige did so i could come back to my apartment and take care of some things. i got out of my dress and into some comfy clothes.

but after awhile, paige made it home and was drunk and ready to do it all. but at this point, i was over it and ready to lay down.

"cmon baby take this off," she said to me, trying to seduce me.

"no no im good," i shook my head. "i just wanna lay down."

she kinda frowned up. "cmon we just got married, i can't get nun?"

"im tired paige," i said. "we've been up since 7am getting ready for this shit, im exhausted. and plus, you're drunk."

"you're acting like we've never had drunk sex before."

"was it ever consensual?" i tilted my head.

she glared at me. "you really wanna do this now? we can't even make it to our honeymoon yet?"

"where's the honeymoon?" i rose my eyebrows. "palm springs? fuck outta here," i scoffed.

"watch your mouth moon," paige said sternly.

i just rolled my eyes.

"and what was that shit you pulled earlier in your speech?" she furrowed her eyebrows.

"the truth?" i rose my eyebrows.

"don't play with me saylor," she said. "that shit wasn't funny."

"it wasn't supposed to be funny," i shrugged. "i was telling the truth and i should've kept going."

she scoffed. "you know better."

"what were you gonna do paige?" i looked at her. "hit me in front of all your friends and family? show the abusive bitch you really are?"

she began chuckling. "did you just call me a bitch?"

"your ears work," i told her nonchalantly.

"you really don't wanna do this right now saylor i swear to god," she got closer to me.

i backed up. "when are you gonna stop treating me like a fucking piece of shit?"

"when you stop being one!"

"i did what you wanted!" i yelled. "what else do you want from me?"

she just huffed.

"the night you proposed," i started. "i tried to say no and you said you'd kill me if i didn't marry you."

she just looked at me, drunk and high.

"so i fucking did," i nodded. "i did it. what else can i do for you to treat me with some type of fucking respect?"

she rolled her eyes.

"and for you to have the nerve to confront billie in a fucking grocery store and tell her im a lost cause," i rose my eyebrows.

her eyes kinda lit up in shock. sure she didn't expect billie to tell me.

but billie didn't, tatum did.

"you go around telling this narrative like im a lost cause and i can't do anything for you," i started. "whole time, you need me."

"excuse me?" paige rose her eyebrows.

"you need me," i chuckled. "and you know you do. you're nothing without me. i make you feel whole, which is why you want control over my life."

"i don't fucking need you!" she exclaimed. "you have nothing! no job! no money!"

"you sure about that?" i rose my eyebrows with a giggle as i began to walk away.

"the fuck is that supposed to mean?" she followed me.

"you think after skating professionally all those years that i don't have any money?" i tilted my head. "im just broke off my ass right?"

she just looked, confused as ever.

"of course because you don't think," i told her. "i have money. i have plenty of money and this whole time i've been able to save it by letting you think i was broke and couldn't afford shit so you could pay for it."

her mouth slightly dropped.

"so yeah," i shrugged. "i let you pay on our apartment in palm springs by yourself, i let you pay for the wedding by yourself and everything else BY YOURSELF since im a lost cause."

should i have said all that? idk. but it's too late now.

paige started chuckling in anger as she walked towards me. heel toe, heel toe.

i began backing up, trying my hardest not to regret anything.

"you've been playing me this whole time?" she squinted.

i kept silent.

"not smart for a girl who has to live the rest of her life with me," she chuckled as she shook her head.

"but i don't," i shook my head.

"you just married me," she tilted her head. "if you want a divorce, you would have to get me to sign the papers."

i took a deep breath, knowing im probably gonna regret this.

"i may have married you in ceremony," i said. "but i didn't marry you legally."

she furrowed her eyebrows.

"you really thought i would sign my name on that marriage license?" i tilted my head. "how dumb do you think i am?"

"but- but i watched you write-"

"i wrote your name down," i grinned. "and you would've noticed if you weren't so damn high when we were doing it."

her eyes just got so wide as she realized how stupid she looked.

"so congratulations," i shrugged. "you are married to yourself, as it should be."

her face dropped.

and suddenly, regret set in.
