ðð»ð¼ð¿ððð»ððµð¼ð´ ð¼ð ð´ ð¹ð¸ð´ð of love. This fear can become so intense that the person cursed by it may find it impossible to form and maintain any kind of loving relationship. All phobias stem from something traumatic or impactful in a person's life, thus it becoming a defence mechanism.
No one could blame Jolene Dalton for being so standoffish when it came to relationships, friendships, and emotion of any kind. After all, everything she's been through has lacked so much love to the point where she only ever found comfort in the disturbed.
Jack Torrance from the Shining has always been Jolene's favourite fictional character. This is a man that no one should look up to. He slowly lost his mind, isolated in a hotel until he met his demise. Jolene saw part of herself within that.
She has always had problems with control whether it be her anger, her snark, or her unique abilities. These too stemmed from her disdain of love.
Jolene may be able to fit in with a crowd that is always being watched, she too being one of the few girls in Beacon Hills High School that everyone had their eye on, but she always knew that there was one small switch in the back of her mind; one small impulse that made her dangerous.
Like Jack Torrance, Jolene constantly feels stuck in situations and it drives her mad. Jolene has a habit of hitting her head with her hand when she feels overwhelmed, she clenches her fists or digs her nails into her palm when she doesn't understand something, and Jolene has a difficult time accepting things to the point where she can get violent if she's too emotional. Jolene has never hurt anyone with these habits, she's only ever been the victim of an equally vicious father.
Mick Dalton, Jolene's father, has always been a caring and loving parent, the fault was the cards he was dealt in life. Mick got a woman pregnant at a young age and dumped Jolene on him when he was only nineteen. This woman ran off, never to be seen or heard from by the Dalton family again. This is what turned Mick to alcohol.
Mick knew he had a problem, knew he was addicted, but he was too weak to get sober. Mick wants to be there for Jolene, take care of his daughter, and be an amazing father, but he lost the woman he was in love with and has been forced to take care of a strangely gifted child.
Jolene was born a siren and she had no idea how it worked. Neither did Mick, who had been the unfortunate victim a few times as she was learning to wield her powers.
Jolene figured out what she was through research, but that didn't help her control. There were only two significant things that Jolene could do: she could read other people's minds and manipulate illusions.
Manipulating illusions came like riding a bike, simple practice and she could never forget it. However, up until she was six, Jolene could hear everyone else's thoughts around her. She knew what everyone was thinking at all times, it was like internal screams. Jolene had become far better at silencing these voices, but at times, when she gets too emotional, the voices come back.
Not only did Jolene spend the first few years of her life being driven mad, but she too grew up taking care of her father when it should have been the other way around. Jolene couldn't count the amount of times she had to pick him up from a bar because he got kicked out, the amount of times she carried him to bed, the amount of times she helped him sober up in the morning, and the amount of times she was the one being the shoulder to cry on.
Jolene's aunt and Mick's younger sister, Bowie, was the one who was more of a parent to Jolene. She didn't have a drinking problem, she was actually quite successful. Bowie is a fashion designer that has been trying to get custody of Jolene for years. She wanted Jolene to have an easier life, one where she didn't have to grow up that fast. The main reason she hadn't succeeded yet was because Jolene didn't want to leave her father. Bowie seemed completely perfect, it made Jolene insecure. With Mick, she felt she could actually be herself, her father always made her feel safe. It helped too that he knew she was a siren and Bowie didn't.
Even if Jolene had these small inconsistencies and habits, she could hide them decently well. So well to the point that she went around with Lydia Martin's clique, a group many people had an eye on.
She and Lydia drew attention, everyone knew them, wanted to be with them, or be them. They had their pick of the litter. Lydia and Jolene could be friends with anybody, date anybody, yet they both still seemed to have horrible taste.
Lydia chose to be with a guy that Jolene hated. She only hurt herself more by being with Jackson Whittemore and it pained Jolene to see her best friend change everything about herself for his benefit. Although, Jolene was no better.
Jolene had been pining after a boy for years. A boy that has always had an eye on her best friend. Stiles Stilinski has done nothing but feel desperation to be so much as in the same room as Lydia Martin. Jolene would have given anything for Stiles to just look her way, but no matter what she did, Stiles would only have eyes for Lydia.
Sometimes it stung to see Stiles. If Jolene wanted to, she could listen to his mind, hear every compliment and piece of admiration he had for Lydia, but he was the person she wanted to tune out the most. Jolene couldn't bear to know that she may never occupy his mind, not even for a second.
It was bittersweet to see Stiles at school everyday and it wasn't going to help that she got stuck with the seat right next to him in their homeroom. Everything Jolene had ever wanted, the boy she has been practically in love with was less than a meter away from her and she knew that all he could think about was how beautiful the ginger girl was sitting in front of her.
"As you all know, there indeed was a body found in the woods last night." Mr. Curtis, their English teacher, began as he turned to the class. Not many of the students were actually listening to him, Jolene included. She had her leg resting on her desk while she drew cartoon versions of her favourite horror villains on her thigh, the cap of the pen sitting between her teeth.
"And I am sure your eager little minds are coming up with various macabre scenarios as to what happened. But I am here to tell you that the police have a suspect in custody, which means you can give your undivided attention to the syllabus, which is on your desk outlining the semester."
Many of the eyes of the students moved to their work, eager to actually make something of this class, but Jolene's eyes had moved elsewhere. She could hear a faint whisper, an internal mention of someone forgetting their pen. Jolene looked outside as she moved her foot back onto the ground, seeing someone unfamiliar sitting on the bench.
Jolene tapped her best friend's shoulder, Lydia turning around to look at her. "New girl, two o'clock."
Lydia followed her friend's eyes to see the dark haired girl sitting outside. Lydia twirled her hair, trying to see if this new girl was worth anything. "I like her boots."
"She looks French." It can be considered an honour amongst certain people in Beacon Hills High School to be considered by Lydia and Jolene. These two girls have been best friends since kindergarten and have been inseparable. They never had a third, only smaller friends outside their group. Danny and Jackson are the two they're closest with. This was mostly because Jolene and Lydia thought everyone around them was either irritating or idiotic.
Lydia and Jolene are a lot smarter than they let on. Lydia passed every single class with flying colours, it seemed she was effortlessly incredible at everything she tried. Jolene wasn't exactly the academic type, but it was no secret that she had physical smarts. Jolene did kickboxing outside of school and was the pitcher on the baseball team. She was the only girl on the team, but she was good enough to play with them. Jolene too had an artistic mind. She was known for her incredibly paintings in art class.
To the simple eye, Jolene and Lydia seemed completely flawless. They were the epitome of perfect, but that was far from the truth. Few could see that due to Jolene and Lydia being fantastic liars. It's a far more helpful skill than it seemed.
Suddenly, the vice principal had walked in with that exact girl Lydia and Jolene had their eye on. "Class, this is our new student, Allison Argent."
"I told you. French." Jolene whispered to Lydia, seeing as how her last name was such.
"Please do your best to make her feel welcome." Allison, who looked nervous, sent everyone a small smile before she sat at the only desk available. Jolene and Lydia watched her every move until she sat down, it would have been intimidating had she noticed.
Allison Argent was going to be their new test subject.
After school, Lydia and Jolene wanted to talk to Allison, see if she was actually nice. They both liked her style, how she carried herself, she clearly had confidence, but there were dozens of girls like that who proved to not be a good fit.
Allison was at her locker and the two girls saw this as their time. Lydia and Jolene approached Allison to strike up a conversation, the ginger immediately complimenting, "That jacket is absolutely killer. Where'd you get it?"
"My mom was a buyer for a boutique back in San Francisco." Allison responded, slightly taken aback at the fact that these two girls just started talking to her. Not to mention the stare from Lydia that told her there was in fact a wrong answer and Jolene with her arms crossed in front of her chest.
Luckily, it seemed that Allison answered right since Lydia smiled. "And you are my new best friend."
Jolene lightly wacked her friend's ar and sent her an incredulous look, to which Lydia waved her off. "She actually has style, you dress like a teenage boy from the eighties."
"That's exactly what I'm going for, asshole." Jolene then turned back to the new girl and introduced, "Jolene. This is Lydia."
"Allison." She sent the two girls a friendly smile just as Jackson, Lydia's boyfriend, suddenly joined them. He put his arm around Lydia's shoulders and hers around his waist, which made Allison visibly uncomfortable, especially with his flirtatious smile sent to Allison. It did make the black haired girl feel slightly more at ease when Jolene made a disgusted noise as soon as she caught sight of him.
"Allison, this is Jackson, my boyfriend-"
"Douche on a leash." Jolene corrected, then getting wacked on the head by Lydia. Allison let out a small laugh, but quickly covered it when the focus was shifted back to her, Lydia informing, "So, this Friday night, there's a party. You should totally come."
Allison seemed a little bashful as she expressed, "I can't. It's family night this Friday. But thanks for asking."
"What the hell is 'family night?'" Jolene looked to Lydia, hoping she may have the answer. All Jolene did at home was comfort her father and clean up after him when he was drunk, she never actually got to do anything normal families did. Bowie too only ever stressed her out, what with her reminding Jolene constantly that she didn't have to take care of Mick.
"It's like when you come over and yell at Hell's Kitchen with my mom, but more normal and with your own family." Lydia explained to her, Jolene then nodding her head, showing she understood.
"Are you sure you can't go? I mean, everyone's going after the scrimmage." Jackson tried to convince her, but Allison wasn't quite sure what he was referring to in the first place. "You mean like football?"
Jackson laughed. "Football's a joke in Beacon. The sport here is lacrosse. We've won state championship for the past three years."
"That's because of a certain team captain." Lydia looked to Jackson with a loving expression before she planted a small kiss to his hand that was around her. Jackson only brought her closer, which made Jolene scrunch her nose in disgust before she turned to Allison desperately. "I will do literally anything for you if you come to the practice in a few minutes because I will die if I have to be around these two for any longer."
Allison let out a small laugh before she nodded her head. "Sure, I'll go."
Jolene smiled and took the girl's arm. The four immediately set out to go watch the tryouts. It was really only for Jackson and the rest were being supportive, but this was a better time for Allison to actually see what Beacon Hills was like; Beacon Hills and all it's strange events.
