ðð´ðð» ð¼ð ðµð ð¹ð´ð Jolene's greatest enemy, but chemistry was a close second. She was over the moon that Stiles offered to help her with the work they were doing, not only because she was horrible at this subject, but because she got to spend time with Stiles. He was happy to be with her, and was quite charmed by her room. It is true that a room shows people's hearts.
One of Jolene's walls was painted to look like Van Gogh's Farmhouses Among Trees while the rest of her walls were covered with horror posters and nothing else. She had a bay window where her orange cat Jonesy was sleeping. Stiles had yet to say hello to the cat since he had been sleeping ever since they got there; Jonesy only ever sleeps or runs around like a madman. Jolene too had a carpet that looked like a vinyl record while her pillows and blankets on her bed were black. Jolene and Stiles were sitting on the ground with their backs against her bed, going over what they had learned in chemistry- or what Stiles had learned.
Jolene had a pounding headache, she was exhausted, and beyond confused. None of this information was registering for her. Stiles was going on and on, but that was his job, it was the whole reason he was there. Jolene, however, couldn't take it anymore. She put her finger over his lips and shushed him. That was when Stiles glanced over at her and went to speak again, "Jo, you have to learn-"
Jolene shushed him again, cutting him off as she took his binder out of his hands and put it on her bed behind her. She did the same with her own, which confused Stiles a little, but Jolene cleared the air, "If we keep doing science, I'm gonna lose my mind."
"I thought you wanted help learning it?" Stiles wondered, her finger no longer touching his lips much to his dismay.
"Yeah, and I'm getting some of it, but we've been here for three hours. Can't we take a break? Just talk? And if you say the word formula, I'll cry." Stiles let out a small laugh at the comment, happy to know that it wasn't him that was the issue, it was the subject matter. Jolene still wanted to hang out with him, talk to him, just not about school.
Stiles shifted a little bit to face her a bit more, wanting to give this girl his full attention. "Alright, what do you want to talk about?"
Jolene looked down at her hands as she cracked her knuckles. There was one elephant in the room there, one neither had really come to terms with. Stiles was unaware that Jolene has a massive crush on him and Jolene was unaware that Stiles took such a deep liking to her, yet they were going on a date with each other that Lydia had created out of thin air.
"The date?"
Stiles took a deep breath in before he nodded his head. Both of these teenagers were obviously nervous to go out with each other, but didn't want the other person knowing. It was a bit awkward between the two of them since they both felt so deeply for each other, even if it was ignorantly so. Jolene didn't want Stiles to think this could be more than it was, she couldn't be that vulnerable. "You know, if it's too weird or anything, we don't have to do it. I mean, Lydia just kind of made it, it's not even a real date."
That comment did make Stiles' heart ache. He knew it was the truth, this wasn't a real date. There were going to be other people there, actual couples. The only reason he was going was so that Jolene wouldn't be a fifth wheel around her friends. Stiles had been planning a real date with her for years, he knew exactly what it would look like, could even envision her smile, but he would take all that he could get. "No, I don't think it'll be weird. And like you said, it's not a real date. I mean, we'd never go on a date anyway, so it can just be a platonic thing."
It hurt Stiles to admit and it hurt Jolene to hear, but she seemed to be more offended. The brunette girl furrowed her eyebrows and turned more to Stiles. "We'd never go out?"
Stiles shrugged his shoulders. "You wouldn't ask me out?"
"Would you ever say yes?" Jolene let out a small laugh, more due to the fact that she was nervous and terrified at the idea of actually dating Stiles Stilinski.
"I asked you first." Jolene challenged. As Stiles looked into her eyes, he noticed her expectant look behind the dark brown of her iris. He averted his gaze to contemplate, letting out a breath. Stiles would ask her out, there was no doubt about it. He wanted to date Jolene, talk to her, be with her. Stiles would do anything to call Jolene his, but that laid in his wildest fantasy; it couldn't be reality.
"No." Stiles expressed. "I wouldn't ask you out."
Jolene was a little taken aback by that answer. Not because she expected him to say yes, but because he was so blunt.
"Really?"
"Of course not. A Greek god wouldn't even be good enough for you, I don't stand a chance."
Jolene smiled and rolled her eyes, an unimaginable amount of fluster present on her rosy cheeks. Stiles smiled too, quite proud of his teasing. Jolene whacked his arm, which only made him laugh. She brought her knees to her chest, unable to wipe that smile off her face. Stiles leaned back against her bed and did the same, bringing his knees to his chest, but resting his forearms on them. His head fell, glancing over to her. "What about you?"
"What about me?"
"Would you go out with me?"
"No, 'cause you said you wouldn't go out with me." Jolene responded with a small laugh. Stiles wasn't as amused.
"I'm serious." Jolene looked over at him. "Would you go out with me?"
Jolene hesitated. Yes, she would. If she ever had the chance to love Stiles, she would never ask the universe for anything else. Not for her life to become more simple, not for the curse of the siren to be taken from her, not for eternal happiness because Stiles would be her eternal happiness. Realistically, however, she had no place speaking a word to him. Stiles is kind, generous, smart, creative, adorable, open, beautiful; he is everything Jolene feels she isn't.
Jolene looked back down at her hands. "You deserve someone better than me."
"That's not an answer." Stiles spoke barely above a whisper, his gaze still on her as Jolene looked up at him. She had no clue how to respond other than to be honest, but that couldn't happen. She couldn't be that vulnerable. Stiles clearly wanted a specific answer, even if his own was the opposite. Jolene was on the cusp of answering him after her long moments of confliction, but was interrupted when Stiles' phone suddenly started ringing. He took his phone out of his pocket and put it to his ear, Jolene only hearing his side of the conversation, "Hello?...Yeah, I'm with her...Scott, what are you talking about?...Yeah, we can come get you...Okay, we'll be there in a few minutes."
Stiles hung up the phone, leaving Jolene anxious and curious. "What?"
Scott needed them at the school. It seemed everything recently had been about Scott. About him being a werewolf, about what he was going through, about him and Allison. Not once did Stiles and Jolene have a second to think about each other, to understand what was happening. They had cared for each other so long and now were getting somewhere, even if it was simply friends. Still, they had no moment to understand what they were to each other.
But, Stiles and Jolene have the curse of a kind heart. They couldn't leave Scott to be on his own, especially since Scott desperately needed Jolene for what he was going to do.
Night had already fallen and Stiles and Jolene had picked up their friend. They were heading back to the school, as Scott told them to and was explaining that Derek had told him how to remember the night he assumed he killed the bus driver, to understand if he would hurt Allison or not. Derek had told him to take Jolene back to the school and get to that bus. Allow her to overtake his mind, his senses so that she could see the truth of what really happened that night. Derek may not like Jolene, may see her as a monster, in his mind a synonym for siren, but he knew that she was an incredible creature. Her powers developed much earlier than the stories he had heard, she had far more control over her limits within people's minds than any other siren Derek had heard of, and Jolene was the only siren left living--to their knowledge--if Scott had access to her, Derek didn't believe it would be out of character for a werewolf to utilise her abilities. Of course, Scott didn't tell her that part. It was only that he needed a favour.
As they drove up to the school by the back way close to the woods, Scott, Stiles, and Jolene got out of the car. Scott wasn't fond of his friend following them. "Hey, no--just me and Jolene. Someone needs to keep watch."
Stiles stopped in his tracks, scoffing since she was offended about being excluded. "How come I'm always the guy keeping watch?"
Stiles didn't care what Scott's answer was, he just started to climb up the fence between where they parked and the school, but Scott grabbed his shoulder and pulled him down as he explained, "Because Jolene is the one that needs to see what happened and she needs me there to do it."
"Okay, why's it starting to feel like you guys are Batman and Catwoman and I'm Robin? I don't want to be Robin all the time." Stiles complained, which was earning a confused look from Scott and Jolene, who was the one to respond, "Alright, first of all, I'm totally the Joker. Second of all; reading his mind hurts, so unless you want to be in excruciating pain, you have to stay."
Stiles let out a groan of annoyance, aware that she had caught him. Stiles turned around and returned to the Jeep while Scott and Jolene began to climb the fence. The two of them hopped right over, Jolene somehow landing more firmly on her feet than Scott, who stumbled a little. The two of them looked on at the bus, the crime scene. Scott was hesitant, even a little scared, but he became distracted when Jolene suddenly interlocked their fingers. He looked down at their hands, confused by the sudden sign of affection, but that wasn't what it was. Of course, Stiles didn't know that and it didn't improve his jealousy.
As they began to walk towards the bus, Jolene leading the way, Scott felt his heart begin to beat faster and his head start to hurt. Jolene's eyes had slowly turned black, her irises far darker than usual. Scott's head didn't hurt as much as the first time she overtook it, it was only a bad headache. His eyes were glowing white, he seemingly had no pupil or iris. As the two walked onto the bus, hand in hand, Jolene stood in front and held her free hand out. It moved fluidly through the air, seemingly touching something. Jolene could feel the fear that Scott felt at that very moment; it felt like silk or maybe a nice tailored suit. Most people's fear was delicate to the touch.
Jolene could see a man being dragged through the bus--the driver--blood being spread on the seats, and large claws scraping through his skin. Jolene didn't see Allison, she never once felt Allison's fear. It was only Scott and the bus driver's, both delicate to the touch. Jolene could see the glowing eyes of a werewolf. None other than Derek Hale. She did watch this werewolf slash right at her, where Scott was standing before. He had clearly been injured the night before, but it healed. Jolene never once flinched because she wasn't scared. Jolene was a little distracted by Scott's, and besides, it was rare that Jolene was actually scared of a werewolf. Her hatred overtook fear.
Jolene was suddenly snapped out of her trance, both she and Scott's eyes turning normal, as they heard Stiles' car horn going off. The two of them suddenly realised that there was a security guard coming out of the school and they had to get out of there. The two teenagers frantically turned around and ran right out of the bus. Even if Scott was supernatural in aspects of strength and agility, Jolene had no issue keeping up with him. Scott leapt onto a red truck with Jolene right behind him. They used it as a vault to get over the chain-link fence, Scott getting much more height. They both rolled on the ground to break their fall before rushing right towards the Jeep. Stiles started the car and the second that Jolene and Scott were inside, he started driving.
Stiles flew down the road, Scott and Jolene not even bothering to put their seat belts on, they were too frantic and Scott's head was still in a lot of pain. As they soared down the road, Stiles was still able to be focused enough to badger, "Did it work? What'd you see?"
"Yeah, it worked." Jolene nodded her head. "Scott was there last night and a lot of the blood is his. He got hurt."
"Wait, so I did attack him?" Scott asked, wanting to understand what exactly he had done, still terrified that he might have been responsible for this tragedy. Jolene shook her head. "No, there were glowing eyes on the bus, but they weren't yours. It had to be that stupid asshole, that prick, the absolute-"
"Derek?" Stiles asked, assuming the only person that isn't Jackson that would receive that many insults from Jolene was Derek Hale. She pointed right at Stiles, signalling the fact that he was right before she continued, "And it kind of felt like Scott was trying to protect the driver."
"Wait, why would Derek help you remember that he attacked the driver?" Stiles looked back at his best friend through the mirror, confused as to why Derek would be trying to prove his own crime. Jolene had no idea what it could be, neither did Scott. There was no way to tell what was going on in Derek's mind, Jolene wasn't close enough to invade it.
"It's gotta be a pack thing." Stiles suggested, but he needed to elaborate more.
"What do you mean?"
"Like an initiation. You do the kill together."
"Because ripping someone's throat out is a real bonding experience." Scott snarked sarcastically, which only gave Jolene ammunition. "Wouldn't be too shocked. Werewolves are basically rabid."
Scott sent her a pointed glare, not appreciating the assumption that he was some kind of monster. It wasn't anything personal with Scott, it was an in-general-situation. She just shrugged her shoulders, noticing the glare. "What? I'm not taking it back to make you feel better."
"You didn't kill the driver, Scott. That means you're not a killer. And it also means-" Stiles jumped in, hoping to be the mediator between the obvious tension that was happening between Scott and Jolene. Although, he was interrupted when Scott very excitedly expressed, "I can go out with Allison!"
Jolene glared back at him as Stiles elaborated, "I was gonna say it means you won't kill us..."
Scott, realising he hadn't even thought of them, looked back at Jolene, who rolled her eyes, and Stiles, who was clearly awaiting an apology. "Oh, yeah. That too..."
