Erik's POV
My eyes slowly opened and began to adjust. I was able to see the red velvet lining of my coffin. My cheek was throbbing with pain under the mask, and it and my clothes reeked of the disgusting odor of vomit.
Ugh! What happened? What time is it? Why do I smell so bad?
I slowly got out of it and headed for one of the shattered mirrors that I had in my room. My mask had numerous cracks, as well as tracks of some dried-out, yellow substance on it, my white shirt was off-colored and seemed to have bits of rotten food on it as well as my pants, my black hair was disheveled and all over the place, and my yellow eyes were rimmed red. I turned to return to my bed, when I saw my guest on a chair next to my coffin, fast asleep and still wearing the outfit I gave her.
Evangeline? What is she-
I froze, the memories of what happened earlier rushing through my mind.
She had struck me.
She had struck me so hard that I was knocked unconscious.
Rage filled my entire being at that moment of realization.
Why that little minx! How dare she-
Are you sure you should be the one outraged here?
It was the Voice again, sarcasm lacing It's words.
I have every right to be outraged! That little viper has struck me!
Well, what did you expect she would do? She did it for self-defense since you decided to put a noose around her neck.
She was about to pull off my-
You have to understand that not everyone you will meet in your life will try and unmask you. She was trying to hand you a piece of tissue so that you could wipe the snot off of your mask since your appearance is a very touchy subject matter for you.
Besides, you kind of owe an apology to her now, since she still stayed with you to make sure you were alright.
At first, I was still angry that the Voice had pretty much supported her assault, but in the end, I knew the Voice was right. Here she was, still in my room, sleeping in a chair that is right next to my coffin, even after I had tried to kill her. Twice! Not only that, but she had saved my life and had nursed me back to health.
But I don't want to just apologize to her. No, that simply just wouldn't do. I had already promised her voice lessons and even now I know that it wouldn't be enough. My unstable mind jumbled to find a good way to apologize to her.
Come on, you stupid monster, think! How should I approach her to express my deepest apologies?
Suddenly, I got an idea.
I first wrote Evangeline a heart-felt note from some leftover ink and a spare pen that had miraculously survived the mob, and as the ink began to dry, I picked her up to put her to bed.
As I lifted her out of her seat, I couldn't help but notice how light she felt. She was a few ounces heavier than my former prodigué, but still light nonetheless. I had expected her to be heavier since she had struck me with what seemed to be her entire weight. In fact, my cheek was still throbbing with a dull pain!
When I made it to her room and placed her on the bed, I rushed into my room, grabbed the fully dried out note, stuffed it into and envelope, and placed it next to her sleeping form.
Hopefully, she would read it in the morning and come to forgive me.
