Chapter 885: Risk
Camille shook her head in denial. "No."
"Really? You're sure?"
"Yes."
âI don't believe you," Ayan said in a gentle tone. "You and Rex just
teamed up to take advantage of me during dinner.â
"Wasn't it your voluntary agreement?" Camille asked lightly.
He lightly held Camille's hand and continued, "Yes, it was my choice,
but my choice is only for you."
He smiled faintly and didn't say much more, just repeating what he had
said earlier, telling Camille to meet him after work.
Camille nodded in agreement before getting out of the car.
She returned to the conference room at the museum, where only
Sophie and Summer were present; the other architects had not arrived
yet.
Seeing Camille, both Sophie and Summer greeted her immediately.
Since it wasn't yet time to start work, the three of them chatted casually.
Suddenly, Summer whispered, "Mr. Baxter hasn't been around recently.
Is he planning to withdraw from this project?"
Sophie chimed in, "Some people in our company are also talking about
it. They even asked me in our group chat. I wonder if it's true. I have no
idea where Mr. Baxter went."
"Miss Camille, do you know anything? You probably hear more than we
do. Do you have any inside information?" Both of them looked at
Camille.
Camille lightly shook her head. "Mr. Simpson is not involved in this
project, so how could I know more than you? You two have more
contact with Mr. Evans. You should be able to get more information by
chatting with him, right?"
Camille raised an eyebrow, and Sophie laughed along with her. "Miss
Camille, you don't know? Summer has had a crush on Mr. Evans for
quite some time. Lately, she's been too shy to contact him directly. Any
work updates have to go through me. She's acting all reserved now."
Camille looked surprised at Summer and smiled playfully, "Really?"
Summer covered her face with her hand, looking shy, "Oh no, please
don't talk about it. They'll make fun of me later.â
Summer's expression made Camille and Sophie couldn't help but
laugh.
Camille said, "If you like him, try putting in more effort. Don't have any
regrets.â
Sophie added, "I think Miss Camille is right. Now, here comes the
question: Why haven't you let Mr. Simpson know that you've secretly
loved him for many years?"
The topic suddenly shifted to Camille, and this sudden and rapid
change left her somewhat stunned for a moment.
Camille raised an eyebrow and replied calmly, âWhy haven't I let him
know? Maybe I'm afraid he'll become too arrogant once he finds out.â
Sophie and Summer both gave her a thumbs-up. Sophie laughed,
âYou're right. Men shouldn't be spoiled.â
The three of them chatted until other colleagues gradually arrived, and
the topic ended.
During the afternoon work, Jenson came to the conference room.
Jenson brought afternoon tea, sat beside Summer, and said to
everyone, "We have about half a month left until the finalization of the
design drafts. We might need to work overtime or revise the drawings
at any time. I want to thank everyone in advance for your hard work. If
there's anything, feel free to communicate with me right away. Let's all
work together to produce the best work."
Jenson's attitude and words were well-received, and everyone nodded
in agreement. Then, someone asked, "Mr. Evans, why haven't we seen
Mr. Baxter recently? Is he leaving this project?"
Since the architects present were all recruited by Preston from the
beginning, they had different attitudes towards him compared to
Jenson. They began to worry that if Preston left, they might be replaced
as well.
Facing this question, Jenson didn't avoid or conceal anything. He
honestly told them, "Mr. Baxter is not planning to withdraw. I am not Mr.
Baxter himself, so I cannot guarantee that he will stay on this project
indefinitely. However, I can tell you that there are no signs of him
leaving at the moment. Recently, he hasn't been around because he
went to Flento to handle some personal matters. He will be back once
he finishes dealing with them."
After Jenson's explanation, everyone's speculations were resolved, and
the topic was not brought up again.
As for Preston's whereabouts and what he was doing in Flento, Camille
was not curious at all. She had been trying to reduce her attention to
Preston and everything related to him.
But last night's phone call from Preston made her wonder again. After
all, it was a bit surprising for him to call her at that hour.
It wasn't too early, and based on Preston's understanding of her, he
should have known that she didn't like answering calls at night. Usually,
if there was something, they would contact during the day. If it was
necessary to call at night, there must be a good reason.
But his call didn't seem to have a clear purpose.
So, what was Preston's true intention?
Was it really just to call and say something about Ayan?
Camille couldn't come up with a convincing answer, and because she
wasn't a mind-reader, she couldn't know what Preston was really
thinking.
She pushed aside her thoughts and continued to work.
In the Simpson Group headquarters, in the CEO's office.
After dropping Camille off at the museum, Ayan returned to the
company. Since Kian wasn't there, an assistant took over Kian's work.
The assistant mentioned the phone call from Camille earlier, and Ayan
nodded to acknowledge it. Then, he asked, "Other than my wife, has
anyone else called me?"
The assistant, puzzled by Ayan's cold tone, shook his head and replied,
"No, only your wife called.â
"I see, you can go now!" Ayan's voice was indifferent, and the assistant
left the office. Ayan put down the pen in his hand and leaned back in
his chair, looking out the window.
Rex's words at the restaurant were still on his mind, and he silently
asked himself how he would handle the situation if he were Cora,
considering all that had happened.
The answer was not much different from what Rex had said, and the
person who best fit that criteria was also the same as his guess.
Ayan sat there silently without any action, lost in thought. Until the
office door was knocked again and pushed open, Kian came in looking
tired.
Kian immediately sensed the heavy atmosphere and Ayan's indifferent
expression. He stared at Ayan and walked briskly to the desk before
stopping.
He fixed his gaze on Ayan and said in a low voice, "Mr. Simpson, I
checked all the nearby surveillance cameras, but there were no clear
findings. There was quite a bit of vehicle traffic, so it would require
considerable manpower and resources to investigate each vehicle."
Ayan nodded, acknowledging that he heard the report but didn't
respond to whether Kian should continue the investigation.
Kian couldn't read his mind at the moment, and his eyes were fixed on
Ayan, filled with questions.
After nearly half a minute, Ayan finally looked up at Kian and said,
"Check on Preston's people. He didn't return alone from Flento, right?
What about his secretary, Quintus? Find out if there have been any
actions.â
Kian nodded in acknowledgment but couldn't help but ask in confusion,
"Mr. Simpson, are you suspecting that Cora contacted Preston?"
âIt's not suspicion; it's almost certain that she contacted Preston. In
Hance, she doesn't know anyone anymore, and Austin doesn't have the
ability to reach out to Hance so effortlessly. Do you think Austin would
take the risk of exposing himself to interfere in her affairs?"
Ayan snorted softly, and when doubts arose in his mind, they gradually
turned into certain facts.
