Chapter 798: Threat
Sean quickly shook his head, "Of course not. We're definitely on the
same side. I would never do anything to betray you."
He was on the verge of a swearing gesture.
In response to his assurance, Preston smiled lightly, a deep smile
evident in his eyes. He said, "No need to be so nervous. I was just
joking. I know you will never betray me. But I still want to remind you
that Ayan is a cunning and scheming person. He's very calculating. I'm
afraid you might unintentionally fall into his trap, so be careful.â
Sean nodded, "Don't worry, I understand.â
"Good, that's settled then.â Preston didn't say anything more. He
pushed open the car door and got out. He said, "I'm not going back
tonight. You can stay at my place.â
âIt's okay, I can go back to my apartment.â
"You'll stay at my place.â It was no longer a question or a polite request;
there was a hint of command in his tone. He said, "I might need you to
handle something tonight, and it would be more convenient if you stay
with me, understood?"
Sean nodded and didn't refuse.
After all, it was work-related, and he didn't think too much about other
things.
He watched Preston go upstairs before driving back to Preston's place.
But he couldn't shake off the feeling of unease, though he couldn't quite
put his finger on it. It was a sense of uncertainty, neither here nor there.
Sean had trouble sleeping and stayed awake until late at night.
Then, in the early hours of the morning, the doorbell rang outside his
door. Since he couldn't sleep, he immediately heard it.
He got out of bed, put on his shoes, and walked out, looking through
the peephole in the door. Outside stood a few men. What were they
doing here at this hour?
Because no one answered, the doorbell turned into knocking.
Sean didn't dare to open the door and even held his breath. As no one
responded, the men didn't wait long before leaving.
Shortly after the men left, Sean's phone rang.
He held his breath and answered the call, "Hello?"
"Sean, Preston has betrayed you. Are you still going to hide what you
did for him?" It was Kian calling.
Kian's words left Sean in silence, and his mind seemed to pause for a
moment.
He couldn't believe it and said, âThat's impossible."
"The police received a video evidence of you contacting Louise and
threatening her. The evidence is solid. Do you still think it's
impossible?"
Sean couldn't hear what Kian was saying anymore. He hung up the
phone immediately and called Preston.
Preston didn't answer the first time.
He finally picked up on the second call.
When the call connected, Sean immediately questioned, "Mr. Walker,
did you frame everything on me?"
"What are you talking about? I can't understand what you're saying!"
Preston showed no displeasure. His tone was gentle, and there was
even a hint of a shallow smile in his response.
He denied it. Sean's expression turned extremely grim, but he didn't
stop there. He said, "Stop pretending. I know it's you. You made me
come back and stay with you, and you provided the video to the police,
didn't you? Why would you do this?"
Preston chuckled and asked, "Ayan told you, didn't he? He's quite good
to you. What did you offer him in exchange for such generosity? Sean,
have you ever betrayed me? Hm?"
He showed no signs of anger, asking as if it were just an ordinary
question.
But Sean knew him well enough. He knew that despite his calm
appearance, he had long been furious inside.
However, he always liked to hide his emotions, hardly ever revealing
them easily. That's why he always gave people the impression of being
gentle and refined. But deep down, he could cause others timid and
feel chills down one's spine.
Sean's face turned pale, and in the face of such questioning, he tried to
maintain a facade of composure because Preston wasn't in front of him
to see his expression. He had to control his inner emotions and silently
tell himself not to panic.
He took a deep breath and replied in a hoarse voice, "No, if you
suspect that I betrayed you and that's why you're treating me like this,
Mr. Walker, then I can only tell you that you're wrong. I haven't betrayed
you. If I had, would Ayan still do nothing?"
Preston didn't respond to his words; he only smirked and spoke in an
indifferent tone, "I don't trust anyone; I only trust my own eyes and
instincts. Sean, I haven't gone too far considering your father. If you're
truly loyal to me, then this situation is an opportunity for you to prove
your loyalty. The police will soon locate your whereabouts. You have
about half an hour to leave Hance City. I've given you the chance;
whether you can seize it is up to you."
After he finished speaking, without waiting for Sean's response, he
abruptly ended the call.
Staring at his disconnected phone, Sean's emotions reached their
breaking point. He clenched the phone tightly, gritting his teeth and
muttered, "Preston... you bastard!"
He knew Preston wasn't joking. The person who had knocked on the
door earlier was probably the police, but they must have realized he
wasn't inside, so they left.
But if they were certain he was here, they would undoubtedly break in
directly.
Quickly putting on his shoes, he didn't even bother with socks and
hastily left the apartment.
He didn't dare to take the elevator, opting to use the emergency
staircase instead. He practically ran down, nearly exhausting himself.
Once he got into his car, he received a message from Preston: "You
better watch what you say, and don't you dare cooperate with Ayan to
go against me just to save yourself. Your father is still in jail, and even
though he's my uncle, I won't hesitate due to family ties. Don't believe
me? You can ask your father. He understands me better than you do.
No one can stop me."
Preston's warning and threat in his words were evident, each one
landing on Sean's face like a slap, neither light nor heavy.
Sean pounded the steering wheel as if going mad, causing the horn to
emit a loud sound that echoed in the parking garage, lingering for a
long time.
He turned off his phone, driving aimlessly on the road. He didn't dare to
return to his apartment, wandering like a lost soul.
Ayan naturally learned about Sean's situation.
Kian tried to contact Sean, but his phone was already turned off. Kian
asked with uncertainty, "Mr. Simpson, do you think Preston has killed
Sean?"
Ayan lightly tapped his knee with his fingertip, leaning back on the chair
on the balcony. His deep eyes gazed at the starry night sky, and he
calmly said, "Preston needs a scapegoat. After finally finding the
perfect one, do you think he would be foolish enough to shoot himself
in the foot?"
Kian nodded slightly, "Should we look for Sean then?"
âThe police are already searching for him. Going after him again would
be a waste of manpower. If he truly has no way out, he will naturally
come to us. Preston thinks he can escape by pushing everything onto
Sean. I won't let him have his way. Once Sean shows up, you should
personally talk to Logan and make everything public. Even if he has
enough reasons to defend himself, it doesn't mean he can walk away
unscathed."
With Louise's situation having developed to this point after so many
days, as long as this dirty water wasn't splashed on the people he
cared about, Ayan didn't care. As for who would be responsible in the
end, he didn't care in the slightest.
But what puzzled him was Preston's motive for doing this.
