âIf you help me, I'll do anything for you, Mr. Baxter. Just let me leave
this project and my current company. You can ask for anything in
return,â Louise put all her hopes on Preston, he was her only lifeline.
Preston snorted coldly without any warmth in his voice, "Do you think
you're worth it?"
Louise suddenly fell silent.
She remained tight-lipped for a long time before saying softly, "Mr.
Baxter, there's nothing for me to do right now but who knows when you
might need my help in the future? I just want to leave this project and
not be taken advantage of by anyone. Maybe you feel like I've offended
Miss Armstrong but I've already apologized to her and she's not
pursuing it anymore so there's no need for you to apologize either.
You'll lose nothing, Mr. Baxter."
Louise tried to read Preston's mind because from their conversation
earlier she could tell that Preston and Camille were good friends who
had known each other for years.
But can a man really have a pure friendship with a woman besides
romantic feelings? Louise was a woman herself, so maybe she
understood women better than men did, especially someone like
Preston whose main focus was always on benefits.
After thinking deeply about it, Louise said quickly again, "Mr. Baxter, if
there are things that may be inconvenient for you to handle personally,
then maybe I can take care of them instead. Whatever task is given to
me, I'm willing to do it."
Preston didn't know what he was thinking as his gaze softened slightly
but his expression remained indifferent as water when he said: "This
matter isn't urgent. Since you've offended her, then punishment is
necessary. We'll see how well your behavior improves.â
Although Louise felt dissatisfied deep down inside, she still nodded
obediently saying: "Thank-you Mr. Baxter". She took it as though he
had agreed with her request.
Louise couldn't help feeling that dealing with someone like Preston
would be difficult because his thoughts were too complex which made
him a difficult person overall however; she had no choice since nobody
else wanted or could help her therefore; she had no choice but cling
onto the hope of relying on Preston.
After parting ways with Camille at the museum, they both went their
separate ways where Jenson stayed behind while talking with the
museum staff whereas; after finishing up work at the museum early,
instead of heading back home directly, Preston drove over towards
Zoie's apartment.
Zoie didn't need to go to the dance studio today, so she stayed in the
apartment until Preston arrived.
Zoie was a very gentle girl, especially in front of Preston. No matter
what he said, she was obedient like a docile kitten.
This kind of girl made Preston feel very comfortable, especially
compared to Molly. He felt more at ease with Zoie.
However, just as he sat down at Zoie's place, Molly called again.
Without asking anything, Zoie simply said: "I'll go read in the bedroom.
You can handle your business first."
Zoie's thoughtfulness made Preston nod with satisfaction. After
watching her enter the room, he answered the phone call from Molly.
Molly asked impatiently on the other end of the line: "Preston, when are
you coming back to Flento City?"
Molly's tone was full of displeasure and seemed like blaming him for
something.
Preston replied expressionlessly: "In a little while."
"How much longer do I have to wait?"
âI have many things going on here and Sean hasn't given me any
updates yet. I can't leave Hance City right now. Can you understand
that?"
Of course Molly couldn't understand it; especially when she thought
about those things that made her unable to stay calm anymore.
She started throwing tantrums and accusing Preston of everything
wrong which only made him increasingly annoyed until all his patience
disappeared without a trace and his voice became cold: "Enough! If
you keep acting this way we don't need contact anymore! Let's talk
after you calm down!"
He ended their conversation directly after speaking those words.
Molly's fussing had left him feeling extremely frustrated until Zoie came
out from her bedroom without asking anything and poured him a glass
of water before sitting next to him watching TV together silently.
Her silence prompted Preston ask: "Don't you have any questions for
me?"
Zoie just smiled slightly saying "If there is something important enough
for you say then naturally it will come out eventually; actively asking
doesn't hold much value."
Zoie's answer left him stunned for a moment as if seeing glimpses of
someone else within her personality.
Unique with an individualistic character.
He narrowed his eyes slightly before reaching out and gently pulling
Zoie into his embrace.
Preston stayed with Zoie until evening where they had dinner together.
He received another phone call, which caused his face changed
slightly. Then he abruptly stood up, saying "I still have some matters I
need attend too; I'll leave first.â
Zoie nodded and watched him leave, then immediately sent a message
to update Preston's whereabouts.
After leaving Zoie, Preston drove straight back to his residence.
Ayan's men kept an eye on his car as it entered the garage of his home
and immediately called Kian. âKian, Preston is back.â
Kian relayed the message to Ayan, who responded with a nonchalant
"Hmm."
The reason for having Zoie report on Preston's movements while also
keeping tabs on him was for double insurance. Ayan wanted to have
concrete answers instead of relying solely on one person's actions.
This wasn't Ayan's style of doing things nor was it the main reason for
success in any given situation.
As for Zoie, Ayan trusted her completely since Kian had personally
vetted her and thoroughly investigated all aspects of her background.
The main goal was to give Zoie more time with Preston.
Ayan didn't need to explain much as Kian quickly guessed what he was
thinking. He spoke up right away: "Mr. Simpson, after we send Sean
back, won't Preston still believe him completely? What if Sean is lying?"
"We'll find out if he is or not," replied Ayan calmly. Even if Sean lied or
deceived them in some way, there would be no loss since he was
expendable at this point anyway. What interested him now more than
anything else was how Preston would react when he saw that Sean
returned unharmed.
Ayan narrowed his eyes slightly and remained silent for two seconds
before saying: "You go investigate Elijah and his relationship with
Preston first; there's no need to start from scratch with investigating just
from looking into Prestons' identity alone since that could be fake too,
given how easily he managed to get adopted by the Walker family as
an orphan.â
"If someone knows Elijah best around here, it would probably be
Madam's father,â said Kian suddenly raising a question about their
approach strategy: "Shouldn't we start by asking Madam's father
directly? Maybe this way we can save time without going down
unnecessary paths?"
Ayan frowned and didn't respond immediately, but his expression was
deep and low, and there was a coldness in his expression, and his
voice trailed off. "Don't worry,â he said. "I'll take care of this.
Kian: "OK, I see. Shall I take you to the restaurant to meet Mrs.
Simpson?"
"HMM."
Ayan also just finished the work meeting and had an appointment with
Camille for dinner in the morning. However, he was delayed by work.
Camille had already arrived at the restaurant, so he could go there
directly.
However, Camille was not a pretentious girl, because he had a job, she
was also very understanding. After all, no one can predict what will
happen in the next second, and you can have dinner together at any
time, but some important work is not to be refused.
Her thoughtfulness made Ayan feel guilty, and he apologized again and
again after meeting her.
Camille shook her head and said, "It's okay. I'm not angry.â
Ayan was not sure: "Really not angry?"
