Chapter 1267: Approaching
Mr. Nores had been socializing outside for most of the evening,
naturally feeling elated. After all, this collaboration with the Simpson
Group and King Group brought numerous benefits.
Tonight, he was the center of attention. Those who had previously
looked down on him and refused to cooperate were now actively
seeking him out for drinks and conversation.
So Mr. Nores was basking in the limelight tonight, in high spirits and a
cheerful mood.
Ayan naturally didn't respond to his words, and Rex remained silent as
well since they had no official collaboration. Therefore, the one who
ultimately responded was Horace.
Horace calmly said, "Mr. Nores, you're too kind. We were just
discussing how perfect tonight's gathering was thanks to your
arrangements.â
Praised by Horace, Mr. Nores felt even better. However, he modestly
replied, "You give me too much credit, Mr. Burris. I do these things for
the sake of the project. As long as it benefits the project, I'm willing to
do it."
The responses from everyone else were relatively plain. Mr. Nores
quickly shifted the topic away from himself and said, "Mr. King also
worked hard tonight. Although King Group's headquarters are in Flento
City, their reputation in Hance City is not small. Tonight's success owes
much to Mr. King's influence.â
Mario also entered the room, and Mr. Nores promptly pulled a chair for
him. Only after Mario sat down did Mr. Nores take a seat beside him.
Although Mario was younger and of lower status, his identity and
position were clear. Even in this project collaboration, Mr. Nores had to
elevate Mario.
Everyone noticed Mr. Nores's actions, but no one spoke up. It was the
unspoken rule in this circle.
Once Mario was seated, Horace greeted him with a nod, followed by
Camille, who glanced at Mario and called out, "Brother Shengxing."
Mario nodded slightly and wore a faint smile on his face,
acknowledging the greeting.
As for Sienna, with no outsiders present, she naturally remained silent,
and Rex was even less likely to speak.
The atmosphere was considerably quieter than before, and there was a
hint of unease. However, Ayan and Horace were the most unaffected,
showing no signs of concern or discomfort.
For a while, everyone maintained silence, and it was somewhat too
quiet. At such a moment, someone naturally took the initiative to ease
the atmosphere.
Sure enough, Mr. Nores put down his glass and began to speak.
Mr. Nores looked at Rex and said, "Mr. Ward, it is truly an honor for you
to attend this gathering tonight. I know you are good friends with Mr.
Simpson, otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to invite you and give us
such face."
Rex leaned back in his chair, his expression devoid of emotion, slightly
cold. However, he still responded, "Mr. Nores, you're too kind. I'm just
here to have a drink."
"Mr. Ward, your presence is not just a drink, but the entire gathering.
The key is that Mr. Ward graces us with his presence. It's our privilege,"
Mr. Nores continued, eager to make the most of the opportunity to win
over the influential figures at the table. He added, "By the way, Mr.
Ward is also related to Mr. King. Mrs. Ward is Mr. King's sister. Look at
the coincidence."
One sentence about their family relationship, and one sentence about
Mrs. Ward being Mr. King's sister, naturally causing mixed feelings
among the people. Mario's face had already become extremely gloomy,
compared to his icy indifference, Rex seemed much happier.
A bright smile appeared on Rex's face, a smile that carried a deeper
meaning. He chuckled and said, "Yes, I should address Mr. King as my
brother-in-law. I should also express my gratitude to the King family for
taking care of my wife all these years."
As Rex spoke, he lifted the glass in front of him and looked directly at
Mario. He continued, "Mr. King, I toast to you. Thank you for your care
towards Sienna in the name of a brother. If Mr. King ever needs
anything from me in the future, just ask. Both my wife and I will be there
without hesitation.â
Rex's words seemed both provocative and boastful, especially to those
present who knew about their relationship. Even Horace, who had
limited knowledge, had a vague understanding. Hearing Rex's words
confirmed his suspicions.
But Horace naturally remained silent throughout, not uttering a word or
leaking any information.
After Rex finished speaking, Mario showed no reaction. He remained
completely still and silent. This lack of response and stoicism puzzled
Mr. Nores.
Mr. Nores looked at Rex and then at Mario. The former continued to
smile without any change, which gave Mr. Nores the impression that
Rex seemed somewhat pleased. However, the latter's expression was
much more complex. Mario's face turned extremely unpleasant, and his
deep eyes were filled with a cold indifference.
This made Mr. Nores feel puzzled. These two individuals didn't seem to
be engaged in a fierce confrontation, or perhaps he was just
overthinking it?
After about half a minute of Rex holding his glass, Mario, who had
remained motionless throughout, finally lifted his own glass. He held it
up as they were facing each other at the perfect distance, the best way
to handle the situation.
Looking at Rex, Mario's voice devoid of any emotion, he said, "It's only
natural for family members to take care of each other, no need for
excessive gratitude. And if there is any gratitude to be expressed, she
should do it herself."
Rex narrowed his eyes slightly, a hint of coldness appearing in the
depths of his gaze. However, he maintained his smile and said, "We
are husband and wife, one entity. Her matters are my matters. Now that
she belongs to the Ward family, we naturally want to express our
gratitude to the King family and Mr. King. Let's toast Mr. King with this
glass."
After finishing his words, Rex raised his glass slightly and didn't wait for
Mario to speak. He took a sip.
The atmosphere had reached a tense point, and Mario had no choice
but to drink his glass of wine. He couldn't afford to lose face in front of
so many people, nor would he truly confront Rex.
From this moment on, the atmosphere became increasingly heavy.
Fortunately, the rest of the evening went relatively smoothly without any
further interaction or friction.
The dinner lasted until 10 p. m., and by this time, most of the guests
had already left. Only a few remained, hoping to have a chat with Ayan
or seize the opportunity to connect with Rex. Since Rex was present,
they naturally wanted to associate with these influential figures, even if
it was just to show their faces and exchange a few words, as it could
potentially lead to future collaborations.
However, having operated in the business circle for many years, they
were well aware of the unspoken rules.
Ayan suggested that they end the evening here and let Rex and Sienna
leave first through a side door, avoiding any unwanted conversations at
the main exit.
After the two left, the atmosphere became much more relaxed. Ayan
spoke up, "Everyone worked hard tonight. After this evening, the news
will be broadcasted by various media outlets tomorrow, providing free
publicity and attention to our project. So far, everything seems to be
going smoothly. Now, I'll hand over the focus to Mr. King. Is there
anything you would like to say, Mr. King?"
