Chapter Twelve: eBay

Two months went by, and it's already December 1st. Like, hallelujah. Did I ever mention that I love Christmas? No? Well I do.

Cole's birthday was a success. I spent Halloween with my mom. I was dressed as a hotdog and she was dressed as a hamburger. We believe she's about to pop anytime now, so I'm expecting a little me. Mom is thinking of naming her Danielle. Me and Nova haven't gotten any closer. I mean, sorta? What I'm trying to say is he doesn't like me, and he doesn't really insult me as much, but he still does. And I still annoy him.. hehe. Manon and Cole went on a date, praise the Lord. I had to force Manon to ask him out since he was 'too scared' to. Rose has been ignoring me, like usual. I spent Thanksgiving at my grandmas house with my cousins and other family members. And now, oh now it's December.

Today is Monday, oh the horror. School ended, thank god, and I have a bunch of science homework... and I'm not going to do it. Oh, and by the way, I aced that math test.

I rewarded myself with some chips.

I watch the snow fall, sticking onto my front porch. I hold a cup of hot cocoa in my hands, the heat warming them up.

I see Nova and Cole walk by. Cole spots me and waves. I wave back, smiling. Nova looks at me with a frown. He begins to wave but then flips me off.

Rude.

I laugh and slightly wave back.

Buttface: are you stalking me now?

4:12 p.m

Me: yep! I've been doing it since the third grade.

4:12 p.m

Buttface: I don't know if I should be afraid or not..

4:12 p.m

Me: I'm just joking!

4:13 p.m

"Hey honey, can you come here please?" Mom calls for me from the couch.

I plop down on my bean bag, "What's up ma?"

The sky.

"Um.. your father and Nailia are coming to spend Christmas with us." she says, giving me a small smile.

"I would have to answer no." I reply, crossing my arms.

I don't mind my dad coming over, but it's just Nailia. She's only sixteen, and literally cannot stand me. She dislikes me more than Nova, and it would take a miracle to find somebody who dislikes me, more than he does! I don't like her either. She's constantly on her phone, and then she says I'm not her sister.

Like, excuse me?

And then she acts even worse when her mom is around.

She sighs, "Honey I know you guys don't get along but could you at least try?"

"When do they get here?" I ask and just as I do, the doorbell rings. I breath in deeply, stand up, and walk to the door. I open the door and see an older version of me.

"Hi dad and Nailia," I greet and Nailia walks in, and just as expected, she's plops down on my bean bag.

"Hey Frost," he pats my head, walking in himself. No 'thank you'? No 'how are you'? God this is going to be a disaster. Just before I close the door, Nova catches my eye. I frantically wave him over.

"What's wrong Matthews? Who is that? Are you hurt? Do I need to beat somebody up?" he says, peeking over and glaring at my dad.

"Nothing is wrong, that's my dad, no I'm not hurt and yes. Yes you may need to beat somebody up," I step outside, closing the door so my parents and Nailia don't hear.

"I, uh, need you to come in and act like we're best friends." I say and his face falls.

"Matthews, you know that is impossible. I don't like you, and I just cannot deal with your annoying self." he states and I groan.

"Look my dad is a big judger about who I hang out with. And maybe you can act like you do like me, and show him I'm not a total loser."

He stares at me, digging into my eyes. "Please? I'll buy you food.." he sighs, rolling his eyes.

"Fine. Only this one time."

I turn my frown upside down, and grab his arm. "Hey dad! Look who arrived!" I pull Nova inside my house.

My mom opens her mouth but I shush her. "Dad, this is my best friend Nova. Nova, this is my dad." Nailia glances up from her phone, and her eyes linger on Nova.

Hiss! He's ours! my inner self hisses. I internally roll my eyes.

Shut up.

"Yep. We're such.. good.. friends." Nova says through clenched teeth and I elbow him.

"Well hello son. You look like someone who is going to be successful in life! Unlike.. someone else I know." Dad says, looking at me. I glare at him, breathing deeply.

Wow. He really wants to go there? I've been taking care of a woman carrying his child and my sister, for months. He hasn't done anything. He didn't even help put together her new room.

"Dean shut up." Mom snarls, kicking dad's shin. I snicker, and Nova leans down to my ear.

"Who's that?" he motions to Nailia.

"The seed, of Chucky." I whisper and she glares at me. "Hey Nailia, it's snowing! Want to go-"

"You're not my sister." she grumbles.

I curl my lips, "Yes. I believe that's true."

"Frost! Don't talk to your sister that way!" Dad scolds and mom kicks his leg again. I smirk at him, crossing my arms.

"Hey Matth- I mean Frost, can we talk in the kitchen?" Nova doesn't give me a chance to say anything before grabbing my arm and pulling me away, into the kitchen.

"Yeah?" I ask.

"Are you okay? I mean.. you aren't your usual annoying self today.."

Really.

He thinks that something is wrong with me?

"I'm fine," I answer.

"Are you sure? Usually you'd be annoying or irritating but now you're not. Matthews.. if there is something wrong then you can-"

I cut him off, "Look I said I am fine! Don't you have your own life to get to, or do you need to buy one on eBay?" I snap. He does a double take, but quickly regains his senses.

"Whatever Matthews, be like that." he snarls, walking past me. Our shoulders bump and I scoff.

Rude.

I sit on my bed, sulking. I hold a picture in my hands, staring at it sadly. It was a picture I had taken of my mom and dad a long time ago.

My dad had once called me a failure.

I was a freshman, just starting high school, and we had this big test. I actually only scored twenty out of forty. It wasn't so bad to me and my mom, but it was for my dad.

That's when we started growing apart. I was realizing that I wasn't the perfect daughter in his eyes.

I may never be.

And that's just fine.

A knock brings me out of my thoughts, "I hope you're studying in there! Don't want you to fail!" dad yells before it goes silent. I roll my eyes, wiping them.

Yeah because studying is the first thing that comes to my mind. There isn't even a test! Anyways, I never study. I always wing it.

"Big girls don't cry," I whisper, keeping my hands on my eyes. I grab my laptop, turning on Netflix. I click on Mean Girls.

"If you're from Africa, why are you white?" I watch the loading screen.

"You can't just ask people why they're white!" My mom exclaims from outside my door. I softly chuckle and she walks in. "Hey honey. Want some chips?" I nod, taking the bag of Doritos from her.

"What's wrong?" she asks, sitting next to me. I shrug, shoving a Dorito in my mouth.

"Ma.. I don't like him being here."

"Honey..."

"No ma. He doesn't understand. He wants me to live up to his expectations. 'Study, don't slouch' or 'don't snort while you laugh'. 'Did you do what I wanted you to do?'. 'You hang out with the wrong people!' It's always about him and what he wants. It's never about what I want," I pause, smiling sadly.

"I like being weird and annoying. I like snorting when I laugh, because it makes other people laugh. I like hanging out with Manon.. I like making people happy,"

"He just wants the best for you honey.." she pulls me into her side, hugging me. "Whatever that is."

"But.. not being myself isn't the best." I mutter and she sighs.

"Just wait till Christmas and they'll be out of our hair."

"That's too far.. can't we just trap them in a box and mail them away?" I ask and she laughs, making me laugh.

She pats my back, "Come on silly. Dinner is ready."

I push pause and set my laptop down. I stand up, stretching. I trudge downstairs, my mom following. Nailia sits at the table, on her phone. Dad is already eating. Mom plops down in between them.

I sit at the very far end, away from them. I grab a plate and put some tortillas on it.

As I'm scooping some beans in it, dad clears his throat. "So Frost. How's school?"

"Good," I scoop some meat, cheese and some cilantro. I fold my burito and begin eating.

"Sit up straight," he comments and mom gives him a look. "What? I'm making sure our daughter is being a proper lady! I didn't raise her to be a sloppy person."

"Dad, I'm pretty sure she couldn't care less about who raised her. Leave her alone," Nailia speaks up, her eyes not once leaving her phone.

I smile to myself, and continue stuffing my face. "Have you found out which college you're going to yet?"

I sigh, "No dad. I just started my senior year-"

"Well I know a couple of good colleges, like Yale University or Harvard University or even Stanford University! Which one do you like?"

"Stop pressuring her, will you?" Mom cuts in, glaring at him.

I, honestly have no idea what my mom saw in my dad when she married him.

"It's never too early!"

"You sound like my English teacher.." I mutter, making another burito. "And that isn't good."

Dad stares at me, deep in thought. "Have you tried a face mask before? A face lifting mask one will work. Oh and some moisturizer. Maybe some-"

"Okay I'll be in my room, watching Mean Girls so if you need me, I'll be up there!" I abruptly stand up, fuming with anger.

I stomp upstairs, cursing underneath my breath. "Stupid, stupid, stupid." I mutter, slamming my door. I throw myself on my bed, and scream into a pillow. My phone beeps and I see a message from Manon.

Manon: what's wrong? I could hear your scream from a mile away.

6:09 p.m

Me: nothing. I missed half of my Mean Girls.

6:09 p.m

I shut my phone off, grabbing my laptop. I wrap myself in my blankets, and set my laptop in my lap.

Suddenly, Nailia walks in, surprisingly not on her phone. "Your dad is annoying." she says and sits down on the floor.

"He's your dad too." I reply, rolling my eyes. "What do you want?"

"I like Mean Girls too," she says, watching the movie. I turn up the volume and zone in on watching it.

My mind drifts off to Nova. Was I too harsh? I think I was. I mean, I didn't have to say, go buy a life on eBay.

God I'm so mean.

"Is Nova your boyfriend?"

"No."

"Oh. Do you like him?"

"No."

"Does he like you?"

"No."

"Are you on your period?"

"No, Nailia. Shut up and watch the movie."

"Okay.."

We sat in a comfortable silence.

"Have you guys kissed?"

"Nailia!"
