Chapter Eleven: A Chicken Ate Me!

"We can surprise him by screaming."

"But the last time you did something like that, you nearly gave the guy a heart attack."

"Gee Manon, thanks for suggesting some ideas! You're a great helper!" I exclaim sarcastically.

Monday is here, and I honestly want to cry. I just want to sleep, forever and ever. Nova actually did already have a present for Cole. He wouldn't tell me what he got him though, saying it was a surprise. So I basically wasted money, when I could've bought a bag of takis.

No, I'm just joking.

I choke on them every time.

But they're so good..

"Ladies, please be quiet." Mr. Earl shushes us. I quiet down, but continue talking.

I'm not finished.

"But maybe we can grab people and have a surprise party for him at my house." I offered just as the bell rang. Right on time too. I grab my stuff, bolting out of class.

"Stay with Cole," I tell Manon.

"Nova! Hey Nova!" I run up to him, tapping his shoulder. He glances behind his shoulder, sighing.

"What Matthews? Who did you make mad now?"

"Nobody I swear! Want to come over and surprise Cole with a party?" I ask, walking besides him.

"Yeah sure." he states.

"Good, I'll see you in History!" I push through the crowd. I keep pushing my way, until I see the person I need.

I, Frost Matthews, am once in my lifetime, going to admit that what I'm about to do...

Is stupid.

I tap Rose's shoulder, holding my breath. She whips around, instantly glaring at me. She waves her little followers off. "What do you want?"

Manon once asked me, what is something I really want to do before I die. And I know what it is.

I want to put butter all over my head.

"You care about Nova right," I ask and she hesitantly nods. "And you care about Cole too, right?"

"What is this about?"

"Well it's Cole's birthday today.. and I'm planning a surprise party. It'll probably make Cole a little bit more happy, since he's a nice guy... I'm sure he doesn't hate you."

She sighs, "But Nova is going to be there, and god forbid me if I even breath in your presence."

I grab her arm, pulling her down the hall.

Please don't kill me...

"If he gets mad, I'll say I invited you." I say, letting her go. "Come on, it'll be fun. And it will give us a chance to get a fresh start! Even though you hate me, you can still be nice for once in your lifetime. Life is too short to miss out on the fun stuff," I wiggle my brows, and she sighs.

"Fine."

I jump in joy, "Make sure to buy a present! Meet me in the library after school! I'll give out the details!" I run, looking over everybody's tall figures.

Why must I be short? Couldn't I have taken my dad's height instead of my moms? Like, that would be so much better. I wouldn't need a stool to get something from the cupboard..

If only I was tall..

I spot a familiar figure trudging through the other kids.

"Chip!" I shout, gaining a couple of stares. I run up to him, but he doesn't stop walking. "Chip stop walking," I grab his shoulder, and he looks at me. His lips are slightly turned upside down, and his brows are furrowed.

He's even adorable when he is frowning.

"Oh hi Frost! How is your day so far?" he smiles brightly. "I missed you,"

There's my Chip..

I grin, pulling him in. "I missed your adorable self too!" We step into History, and sit down. Cole and Nova walk in, smiling.

"Happy birthday Cole you big, golden nugget!" I beam, smiling at him. Nova snickers, plopping down next to me. Manon walks in.

"Thanks," he smiles back, watching Manon.

"Oh my god! Just kiss al-" Nova's hand flies to my mouth, stopping me from talking.

"Don't open your big mouth and ruin everything damn it." Nova harshly whispers in my ear. He pulls his hand away, wiping it off on his sweatshirt.

"You're hand tastes like soap."

Classes went by quickly, and lunch came. Kai agreed to coming to the party, and so did Iris.

"Is butter a carb?" I ask myself. As I'm waiting in line for my lunch, two certain people catch my attention.

Everyone on the football team, including Nova, are giving Cole birthday punches. Manon walks up to me, pulling me out of line.

Sigh.

Now I'll never get to eat.

"What's with the blush?" I ask, poking her red cheeks.

"I-I'm going to do it. You've told me to go for it for years, so I'm going for it." she states before speed walking away. Do it? Do what?! Go for what?!!

Don't just ever leave me without any explanation or details. I will go supersane!

"Hold on! I need details woman!" I yell, chasing after her. And being the clumsy person I am, I trip and fall. Lying on the floor, I watch Manon walk straight up to Cole, grab his face, and press her lips onto his.

Everybody goes quiet.

Oh.

My..

God...

She.. he. They kissed! They freaking kissed! My prayers have been answered! Thank you God, I owe you one.

"SOMEBODY TAKE A PICTURE!" I scream at the top of my lungs. Slowly, he kisses her back. I hear a camera click, and satisfied with myself, I stand up.

"Go best friend! That's my best friend everybody!" I cheer. They pull away, blushing furiously.

"Hey who is that? My best friend!" I cheer.

"Yeah Manny! Show 'em who's boss!"

God they took forever. I actually have a wrinkle named Forever because they took forever to get together.

"Who run the world? Girls! Who run the world? Girls! Well in this case, it's Manon's mouth!" I shout running up to them.

Forget lunch, it's now teasing time.

"So Manon," I throw my arm over her, "how was it? Is he really a good kisser?" I ask and she blushes more. The other footballers give Cole the 'nice one man' punches and smirks.

"Frost stop it," she laughs, blushing even more. Nova pats Cole's back, smiling.

"Was it wet?"

"Frost!"

"I am a real unicorn,"

Bang.

"I am a real unicorn,"

Bang.

"I am a real unicorn."

Bang.

"I am-"

"Matthews what are you doing?" A hand suddenly stops my head banging. I look up through my lashes, a smile forming on my lips.

"Hi Nova. Whatcha doing in the library?" I ask and he removes his hand. I put my head in my palms, watching him sit down.

"Practice got canceled today. I'm waiting for Cole. Why are you in here?" he responds, messing with my books.

I sigh, "Waiting for Rose." he nods, staring off into space. I stare in shock, my lips slightly parted.

Gee. And I thought he would freak out. You know, like the whole "why are you hanging out with her? I thought you don't like her?"

Well I don't hate anybody. I may not like them, but like a hate are two different things. Just as like and love. I never hate anybody, even if they hate me.

He suddenly snaps his eyes to me, "What? When? Where? Why? How?"

It took him like 500 years to realize what I said? That sure is a shame.

"Calm your dong, she agreed to go to the surprise party. So, don't be mean."

"Are you stupid?"

"Yes. Yes I am. Thank you for asking," I say and see Rose walk in. "Hey Rose! Come over here!"

She hesitantly walks over, clutching her back pack straps. Nova watches her with a glare, his jaw clenching. He scoots his chair closer to me as she sits down.

I give him the stink eye, "Before you start a cat fight with her, please understand that this is for Cole. Your bestie, remember him?"

He sighs, "Fine whatever, but if you try anything.." he points a finger at Rose. She holds her hands up.

"So Frost, what's the plan?" Rose asks in a nicer tone than usual.

Ladies, gents, unknown species. This might be the only time Rose is ever going to be nice to me. I expect extreme attitude after this event.

"So, I already told Manon, Iris and Chip, but we're all going to gather at my house. I'm going to send Cole to the store to get something, and while he's gone, we'll get the cake and presents, and other stuff ready." I explain, taking a dramatic breath.

"When he comes back, we'll all yell 'surprise!' and blah blah. Eat cake, open presents, spend time together. Possibly tease him about what happened at lunch."

Nova nods along with Rose. "Maybe we could all even go out afterwards? I heard there was this festival.." she suggests and I clap in approval.

The librarian walks by, dropping off one of the books I told him to save for me.

"What a beautiful chocolate man!" I exclaim with a laugh. He laughs himself before walking away.

"You actually like that movie?" Nova asks, a smile taking over his frown.

"Um, yes! It's like the best movie besides Mean Girls!" I answer.

"We have to watch it together or I'm going to have a BF." I say, poking his arm.

He laughs beautifully, catching me off guard.

Huh. I guess I was too focused on annoying him, I never realized how innocent he is. His features even look so.. innocent. He looks as if he isn't mean. His freckles scattered all over his face, his high cheekbones and jaw. His pale skin making his dark brown eyes, look darker. His dark brown hair perfectly frames his features.

Oh my god, what is wrong with me.

Was I checking him out? I need some serious help.

"Uh.. Matthews?"

I clear my throat awkwardly as I notice him staring at me confused. Rose also stares in confusion. "There... was something... on your face.." I lie, burrying my head in my arms, hiding the blush.

This is so awkward. He saw me checking him out! I mean, can anything be more awkward than that!This is probably the most awkward situation I've ever been in.

"Were you checking me out, Matthews?"

I could practically hear the smirk in his voice. "No...?" my words come out muffled from my arm.

"If you say so,"

"I'll see you guys later, I'm going to miss the bus." Rose states before I hear the sound of footsteps fading away.

I just want to be whisked away by a flying nugget. Can someone make that happen please?

We sit in a very awkward and tense silence. I gaze at my tore up Converse as if they're the most interesting thing I've ever come across.

Nova sighs deeply, tapping my shoulder gently.

"Matthews there's something I want to get straight to the point of, and out of the way. I like-"

"Hey guys! How's it going?" Cole's voice interjects Nova's sentence. I muffle out a hey, lifting my head.

"Hi Manny," I perk up, smiling at Manon. She waves, but slowly stops walking when she notices Cole.

Come on Manon, stop being so shy for once.. man up!

She gulps, putting on a bright smile, "H-Hi C-Cole.." she stutters and blushes. I face palm myself, groaning.

"What's wrong?" Cole asks, bringing Manon in close to him.

"You're supposed to kiss, that's how it works." I say in disappointment. "I mean, can you feel, the love, tonight?" I sing.

He grins, leaning down to her face. "Like this?" he then pecks her lips, leaving her with a light blush.

"Yes," I nod, "just like that. I'm proud of my best friend. Kiss kiss, fall in love!"

"You're weird," Nova mutters.

"I know."

•.•

"Okay people! Listen up! Do we have the sodas?"

"Yes."

"What about chips?"

"Yes."

"Decorations?"

"We're working on it."

"And the cake?"

"Yes."

"Thank you Chip for answering my questions, you deserve a sticker." I put a smiley face sticker on Chip's forehead.

Nova rolls his eyes, and continues tapping party hats. Rose is working on decorating the cake, and let me just say. Her decorating skills are fabulous. Kai sits on the ground, helping Manon make a birthday banner. Iris is wrapping the presents while I am 'helping'. Mom is in the kitchen, doing what she loves to do.

We also invited his siblings and they're on their way.

"How many siblings does he have?" I ask, standing by the table. He shrugs, pausing for a moment to think.

"He has twelve but only lives with four of them. And the ones he lives with are all boys."

Dang.

"Here," he stands up with a hat. He places the hat on my head, adjusting it to fit right. "There. You look like a child." he comments with a playful grin.

"Why thank you," I grin back, walking over to Iris. I catch her staring at Kai before quickly looking at me.

"Oo, somebody got a little crush?" I tease, sitting down on the floor next to her. She blushes and laughs, shaking her head.

"No?" I stand up, "You should. He's so cute and adorable."

I walk over to Rose, checking out her cake. "Nice cake," I compliment.

"Thanks for inviting me, even though I hate your guts, this is actually quite fun." she smiles sincerely, and I do a double take.

If this was Nova, he'd say I was insane for thinking I could make anything be fun.

"Thank you. And I mean that. It's quite a praise coming from someone like you." I state before sauntering away to Kai and Manon.

"Hey best friends." I wave, plopping down. "Whatcha up to?"

"Look what I made! It's like this ombre effect thing!" Kai shows me his ombre letters. Manon smiles, quietly laughing.

I smile, "That's neat my dude. Keep up the work Chip." I pat his head just as the doorbell rings. I go to answer it, and see three young triplets, and one older one. The triplets look maybe around kindergarten age, and the older one, possibly a freshman.

And they all look like Cole.

I open the door, "Hello! Come in," I move aside and let them in. The three little one bolt for Nova.

"Nova!" They scream and he swoops them all up. "We missed you!" they giggle, and he laughs.

"I missed you too you rascals! What have you been up to?" Nova laughs, kneeling down. I watch in amusement.

I've never once seen him act this sweet to anybody. Even me. And I'm the nicest person here!

"Hi, I'm Caleb." the oldest sticks his hand out. I take it, shaking it.

"Hey C-dog, I'm Frost and I give everyone nicknames. What's their name?" I ask, gesturing towards the little ones.

"That one is Coran, this one is Cal, and the one that Nova is holding, is Cody." he explains, pointing to each of them.

"All C's huh? They're all so cute! How do you know who is who?" I ask.

"Just look at their eyes. Coran has green eyes, Cal has blue eyes and Cody has brown." I open my mouth to say something but I see a car pulling up.

"Everyone he's here! Get into position!" I yell, switching off the lights. We— including my mom— scramble into position, which is gathered around the table where the food and presents are.

I stand behind Nova, but I jump on his back. His hands automatically fly underneath my knees so I don't fall. "You're too tall, I couldn't see." I explain.

"When he walks in, everyone yell surprise or something." I state just as the doorknob jiggles.

The door opens and Cole steps in.

"SURPRISE!!" Everyone yells, making Cole jump.

"A chicken ate me!" I yell without thinking, and everyone looks at me. "What? I panicked!" Cole laughs, fanning his face.

"Oh my god, you guys scared me to death! What is this?" he asks with a large smile.

"A surprise party for you. Happy birthday you old man!" I exclaim, climbing off of Nova.

"I.. I.. wow.. you guys did all of this, for me?" If his smile were to grow more, I'm afraid it would tear his face in half.

"Well duh, you're our best friend and we would do anything for you," Nova states, walking up to Cole and giving him a bro hug.

I cup my mouth with my hands, "You softie!"

"Be quiet Matthews."
