The morning was awkward. Although Hawks acted as if nothing happened I couldn't stop thinking about it.
Though I did find one thing different. The state of the cabin. It started small. Just extra blankets on the couch. Though it wasn't till I heard what sounded like a swarm of bees and Hawks obvious excitement booking it towards the door like a kid on Christmas.
"Whats going on?" I yelled after him
I watched him come back in with a large box, "Nothing"
"Nothing" I look at the box
"Its...bird...seed. I bought a lot of bird seed"
"I know for a fact you're a better Liar that that"
"Well it's the truth" he huffed taking the box to his room.
This continued throughout the day. A drone buzzing followed by a new package. Some were small while others were like moving boxes.
He had no intent on talking about it. Eventually, I gave up and just accepted he had his secrets and I'd just do my own thing.
That was my mentality until that night. The sound of moving furniture, boxes being ripped open and at one point I heard a curse and a thud. It was a relief when the vacuuming stopped at least. I could hardly sleep yet I decided it best not to deal with whatever chaos Hawks was a part of. I would just deal with it in the morning.
The morning chaos was not what I imagined though. Fluffy blankets, enough plush stuffies you could drown in a pile of them.
There were plants in pots, all the windows opened letting in the air and natural light. The place went from some dark mancave to ghibli film in a night.
At the center of the chaos Hawks was curled up in a large papasan chair, passed out, with 3 stuffed plushes around him.
I took a long moment. Am I angry for him limiting my sleep? Am I confused by the scenery change? Am I frusterated by how cozy everything looks I just wanna flop down anywhere and sleep.
I gather my thoughts and finally go poke the bear, or bird rather.
"Hawks, what is all this?" I poke his cheek
He mumbled something completely unintelligible.
"Wake up"
"'M 'wake" he mumbled
"What did you do?"
His eyes finally opened though he still had a sleepy look, "I finished it"
"Finished what?" I get more confused
"The house, it's all ready now" he shrugged, "I handled it, you just rest k?" He shifted seeming to get comfy and start dozing again.
With more questions than I started with I turn to the internet. When in doubt, Google it out.
First step was trying to figure out what this is. Could it be OCD? They say the obsessive change could be that? Or it's ADHD? This is so sudden though?
He said the house is ready? Ready for what??? I finally land on what I think this is. Is this nesting?
I start a long trail of research. First on humans...then on birds... you know, just in case. Can you blame me??
Its definitely a nesting behavior, the thing that's got me confused and admittedly concerned is it's usually during the last few months before labor does nesting begin in humans and is usually seen in doing heavy cleaning.
In birds its...well literally building a nest. It's a bit hard to research though without knowing exactly WHAT bird I want to research.
I was mid-search when arms wrapped around me and a Large body pressed against my back, "What 'cha doin?"
I close my phone a bit more focused now pulling has arms off of me, "Why all this?" I point at the couch that has the pile of blankets, pillows and plushes
"Decorating?" He shrugged
"Hawks, this is beyond decor"
"Remodeling then"
"Just tell me whats up" I cross my arms
He looked like a kid in trouble for trying to steal a lolli, "Well...I don't know" he mumbled
"You don't know?"
"I don't know" he refused to look me in the eye, "I just thought... you know it should be cozier here. And plants help with the air and it was gross around here so I cleaned..."
"You're nesti-"
"No- no no no. I'm just...cleaning"
"Ok, why are you cleaning. Why this effort?"
"Well" he hummed playing with his hands, "Maybe I wanted you comfortable"
"Why?"
"Well you're here for a while so...I don't know"
"Ok Hawks" I huff sitting down, "You're nesting. I wanna know why"
"I don't know" he huffed
"Uh huh. Could it be preparing for something?"
"Maybe" he huffed
"I can't help if you don't communicate"
"My brain says we are mates ok?" He scoffed, "I don't know what to tell you. I have been trying really hard to keep you comfortable but all I really want is you in bed all day, ready for kids. I am trying EVERYTHING to stop it!"
"You-"
"And i mean everything!" He continued, "I tried to keep sexual thoughts away, tried to increase or act on them. I made this place my territory and a more nested area. I've preened to the point I have pulled out feathers I didn't need to"
"Hawks, is it that bad?" I raise a brow
"Everytime you speak I have to keep from shoving my tongue down your throat"
Yup, that settles it. This is a drastic situation. I pull out my phone and order them, "Fine, then I have the solution. Just wait till tomorrow"
"What is-"
"Don't worry about it" I murmer. This WILL cause confusion when he leaves rut but it will protect me.
Hawks POV
She spent the day seeming to placate me. If I wanted to make her food she ate it, she even took the extra portions I gave her. She helped me all ways she was comfortable.
Admittedly this was a bit odd but it kept me fairly calm. The next day though I woke to a surprise.
2 large eggs sat on the couch. She was sat between them passed out.
My brain went into overdrive. Logic mode tried to kick in of HOW?? but that vacated my brain when I touched one feeling how cold it was. I immediately started piling blankets to keep it safe and warm.
She woke up when the blanket pile had gotten absurd, "Not so much. Just needs to be warm enough"
"It was cold! We need to take care of it"
She pulled out a paper list crossing off a number of things
"What is that?"
"Just cataloging something" she mumbled getting up, "You're gonna help me care for these?"
"Well if course!" I snort getting the second one Well covered in warmth
She nodded scratching something else off her list, "Great. Then can I go now?"
"Go?? Go!? Why the hell would you go?" I stop my meticulous fixing of the blankets to look at her directly, "You can't just go"
"Well you seem to have this handled" she put away her note pad looking satisfied, "You have eggs, I should be able to have my freedom"
"What will they do without a mother?? You're my mate now. You can't just leave. We need to keep them warm and safe and then nurture them until they can survive out there"
Readers POV
"You know i-" oh shit. I watched in real time his face fall and the sudden anxiety flood his expression, "Its ok-"
"How the fuck are we going to raise kids in this world. Oh my God they aren't going to survive" he mumbled more to himself
"No no no. It's ok" maybe buying giant porcelain eggs was a bad idea but that's what all the websites said I should do!
"How can you think of leaving us?? I can't care for them alone!"
"Hawks, you're a hero I'm sure-"
"Oh god, I'm a hero. Do you think villains would target them!? They are too young. I have so much going on too..."
Ok, maybe this was too far, "Ok, it's ok. I'll take them and give-"
"Don't take my babies!" He stopped to put himself between me and the eggs.
I swear to God all those websites were lieing. They said if you wanted to calm down a avian partner during their time giving them a couple fake eggs would do the trick. He is NOT calm though.
Then again the sexual tension seems to have disappeared so that is at least solved. Though based off this reaction I'm kinda scared how he'll react when he realizes they are fake. I'm kinda amazed he's even fallen for it thus far.
Either way I feel like I solved one problem by causing another.
