I watch Jessie and my brothers walk to her room before I head off to find Shane. Vladâs announcement has completely floored me. I suppose that Shane has a point about her being safer in Ireland. If the Wolf knows sheâs here then itâs only a matter of time before he comes for her. Despite that, I canât shake the feeling that she would be safer here with me and the twins. Safer with me. I would never let anyone harm a hair on her head, even if it meant never letting her out of my sight for a second. I consider the possibility of going with them, even though Iâve sworn never to set foot in Ireland again, but I would for her.
Shane is in his room when I find him. I walk inside and sit on the bed while he packs his small suitcase.
âIâll keep her safe, Con,â he says, reading my mind. Weâve always been in sync, he and I, but I donât agree with him on this one.
âI know you will, Shaneâ¦â
âBut?â
âYouâll be distracted there. You wonât be able to watch her every second of every day.â
He closes his suitcase and shoves his hands into his trouser pockets. âThe Wolf is in Moscow. Iâm certain if he knows about Alexei then he knows about Jessie too, and itâs only a matter of time before he comes here looking for her, Con.â He shakes his head and I see the worry etched on his face.
âYou really think sheâll be safer there with you?â
He nods at me. âLiam still isnât one hundred percent. Youâll be running the businesses. Mikey will be run off his feet helping you. There are more distractions here, and you know she wonât stand for being locked up in this place.â
âAnd in Ireland?â
âSheâll either be with me or sheâll be in the suite at the hotel.â
I let out a long breath and close my eyes. âI canât believe heâs back, Shane. I was starting to believe he was dead. I think she was, too.â
âI know. But once we get back, we can focus our energies on finding him. When Iâve sorted out Patrickâs estate and tidied up all of our affairs, there will be nothing tying us to Ireland any longer. Liam will have had another week to recover. Weâll be back to full strength and we can focus on what needs to be done.â
âI suppose youâre right.â I look up at him. âYou sure you donât need me to come with you?â
He narrows his eyes at me. âYou want to come?â
âNo!â I shake my head. âBut I will if I need to. If you both need me to.â
âI need you to take care of business here, Con. Me and Jessie will be fine.â
âYou just want her to yourself for a week,â I say, throwing a pair of balled up socks at him.
He shrugs and grins at me. âYep.â
âLucky fucker.â
âI sure am,â he winks at me.
âIâll miss you both,â I say. The thought of him in Ireland makes me feel something I canât quite put my finger on. Perhaps Iâm worried that heâll remember how much he loved the place and never come back home.
âIâll miss you too, Con. Weâve spent more time apart these past few months than we have in our whole lives. Sheâll miss you too,â he adds, âso youâd better go and give her the send-off she deserves.â
âYep,â I say as I stand. âIâll catch you in the morning, bro.â
âI love her just as much as you do, you know?â he says as Iâm near the door.
I turn to him and frown. âI know.â
He nods. âI know it might not always seem like it, thatâs all. But I would die before I let anyone hurt her.â
âWell, yeah. How much youâre into Jessie isnât quite the secret that you think it is, bro,â I chuckle. âAnyone can see youâve got it bad for her.â
He picks up the socks I just threw at him and launches them across the room at my head. âAsshole.â
