Iopen the door to our suite and walk inside to see her lying on the sofa, her legs draped over the end and a cushion under her head as she flicks through a magazine. She hasnât heard me come in and she jumps with fright when I lift her legs so I can sit beside her.
âShane!â she shrieks. âYou almost gave me a heart attack!â
âSorry, sweetheart,â I chuckle as I take a seat. âYou were lost in your own little world.â
âI was reading about this man who married his truck.â She arches one eyebrow at me. âHis truck! Like he has sex with it and everything.â
âWith a truck?â
âA truck!â She places the magazine on the floor beside her. âThose things are addictive,â she giggles and it makes me smile. Sheâs never had the chance to switch off and relax before and it is fucking beautiful to see her doing it, and especially with me.
âWhy are you back so early, anyway?â she asks as she slides her bare foot onto my groin and rubs my cock. I take hold of it, keeping it in place.
âNot to fuck you, as much as I would love to, but we donât have time right now.â
âWhy?â
âIâm taking you to meet someone.â I smile at her and tap her legs. âPut some shoes on. We need to leave.â
She sits up and reaches for her socks and sneakers beside the sofa. âWho?â
âItâs a surprise.â
She rolls her eyes at me. âIs it business stuff?â
I shake my head.
âCan I have a hint?â
âNo.â
An hour later, we pull up outside the cottage in the countryside and Jessie peers out of the window. There are wind chimes hanging all around the outside as well as overgrown bushes that hide the house largely from view. It hasnât changed much since I was a kid. I love this place.
âCome on,â I say as I climb out of the car and Jessie follows suit.
âWhose is this place?â she asks, wide eyed as she looks around at the flowers in huge colorful flowerpots. There is a giant sundial on the middle of the lawn and a fountain a few meters behind it. âI love it,â she breathes.
I take her hand and walk her up the path. I donât even have a chance to knock on the door before my Aunt Em opens it. She has barely changed either, except her hair is slightly grayer, but she still wears it loose and wavy. She still wears long flowing skirts and dozens of bracelets and I only just realized how much I have missed her.
âShane!â she says as she steps out and pulls me into a hug. The smell of patchouli and jasmine takes me back to the summers we would spend at this cottage when we were kids. It was my grandmotherâs back then. Em inherited it when she died, given that she was the only surviving daughter.
When she releases me, she doesnât even let me introduce Jessie before she wraps her in her arms too. âAnd this must be Jessie. Shane has told me so much about you.â
âThis is my Aunt Em,â I say as Jessie looks at me over Emâs shoulder with a huge smile on her face.
âCome in,â Em says when she finally lets Jessie go. âAoife is here too.â
âWho is Aoife?â Jessie mouths to me as we go inside.
I slide my hand around her waist and press my lips close to her ear. âMy cousin.â
We follow Em into her sitting room and are immediately greeted by a tall, dark haired woman in her mid twenties, with a huge pregnant bump, whose smile is even wider than my auntâs.
âShane!â she says excitedly. âYou havenât changed at all. From your pictures, I mean.â
âWell, you certainly have. I think you were about one the last time I saw you?â
âYes,â Em replies. âIt was about a year after your mumâs funeral.â She wipes a tear from her eyes. âIt was the last time I saw any of you.â
âI know,â I say as I wrap an arm around her shoulder and kiss the top of her head.
âCome on, tough guy,â she sniffs and straightens up. âYou can help me make the tea.â
I follow Em into the kitchen and she fills the kettle and places it on her stove. I recognize it immediately. Itâs an old fashioned kind that whistles when the water is boiled and it belonged to my grandmother too. She turns to face me, her hands resting on the countertop either side of her.
âYour Uncle Paul came to see me,â she says, searching my face for a reaction.
âOh? I didnât realize he was back yet?â
âIt was late last night,â she replies with a slight bob of her head.
I donât speak. I stand in her kitchen, listening to the sound of the water boiling while neither of us mentions the thing that is most obviously on both of our minds.
âI told him that I know,â she finally says before letting out a long, slow breath that it seemed like sheâd been bottling up for a while. âI told him that you know too.â
âFuck, Em!â I shake my head in exasperation.
âWhat else could I do, Shane? He was standing right here, asking me questions about you and the boys.â
âWhat did he say? Did he confirm it?â
She nods her head.
âFuck!â
âYou havenât told them yet then?â
âNo. There just hasnât seemed like the right time to do it. Every time I tried to, I just froze, you know? I mean how do you tell someone something like that?â
âIâm sorry that I burdened you with it, Shane.â She wipes a stray tear from her eye. I step closer to her and put my arms around her and she leans against me.
âDonât be. Someone has to tell them, and itâs better that it comes from me. And now that Paul knows we know,â I sigh, âI need to tell them as soon as possible, but I want to speak to him first.â
The whistling of the kettle pierces the air and she rushes to take it from the heat.
âThat makes sense. And what about Jessie? Does she know?â Em asks as she pours water into her old yellow teapot.
âNo. Itâs not fair to ask her to keep a secret like that.â
âOf course not,â she purses her lips and then looks up as the kitchen door opens and Aoife walks in.
âDo you have any of those ginger biscuits, Mammy?â
âOf course, petal,â Em turns and opens a cupboard. âYou feeling queasy again?â
âNo. I told Jessie how amazing they are,â she laughs. âSo I said we should have some with our tea.â
I roll my eyes. My girl has such a sweet tooth.
âIâll bring some through,â Em says with a smile and Aoife walks out of the kitchen, leaving us alone again.
âDid Paul leave a contact number, or tell you where heâs staying?â I ask.
âNo,â she replies with a shake of her head. âAs elusive as he ever was. Does he still have that old place out in Antrim?â
âNot as far as I know. My lawyer told me it was sold off years ago. Did he say what his plans were?â
âNot really. He did say he intended to catch up with you soon, so I expect youâll be seeing him shortly.â
âDid he tell you why, Em?â I ask, conscious that Aoife or Jessie could walk into the room at any moment.
She looks up at me with tears in her eyes. âHe said that he loved her,â she replies with a shrug. âIsnât that the reason any of us do anything, Shane?â
