Jazz apples are red, Shiitake mushrooms are brown

Harri's POV

"I can't believe we have detention," she huffs throwing herself into the chair.

I raise my brows as I take the seat beside her, "you're not serious are you?"

"What?" She asks in protest, almost like has no idea why we were sitting here.

"You literally made me stop to smell roses, Jazz. I told you we were going to be late but you still stopped to smell the stupid roses."

She throws her bangle covered arms in the air. "And I stand by that, Harri. Life is too short to not stop and smell the roses, or the daisies or whatever damn flower. And Mr G should understand that!"

"Mr G does understand that, Miss Lee. But what he also understands is that if one wants to progress in life they should have an education and to achieve this, students actually need to turn up to class and on time!" Mr Grayson announces walking through the door as if on cue. "And on that note, Miss Lee and Miss Harlow I am very pleased to see that you have not only managed to make yourself available for this detention but you've managed to arrive early."

"It's not like I had a choice," Jazz mutters under her breath in reference to my insistence that we arrive ten minutes ahead of time.

I try to cover my face with my hair and rest my chin on my hand so Mr Grayson can't see that I am laughing. I tilt my head and peek through my black strands at Jazz who cheeks are glowing red probably more at annoyance at our conversation being disturbed rather than through embarrassment at being caught talking about Mr Grayson behind his back.

"Anyway, you don't need an education to progress, Sir. I mean Ryan Gosling never finished high school and look at him."

I sit there, my mouth open, dumbfounded. I'm not so much shocked at Jazz's statement but the fact that she managed to say it with a straight face.

Mr Grayson lets his glasses fall to the tip of his nose. He looks at her from over the top of them studying her face like he can see the cogs of her brain ticking over. "Yes well, that's Ryan Gosling. People like Matt Powner were not so lucky."

"Who?" She asks twirling her blonde hair between her fingers.

"Exactly!" He states.

From the look on Jazz's face, I can tell the point is lost on her. From the look on Mr Grayson's face, I can tell he not in the mood to explain to her that she's never heard of him because he, like most people who haven't finished high school, never make it where they want to go.

I swear I hear him mutter, "may the odds be ever in your favour," under his breathe but when I look up at him he is standing there straight faced.

"Everyone sit down! This is not the social club this is detention. Stop talking!" He instructs sternly as more detainees enter the room.

I look towards the door as he says this just in time to see Theo, Erik with a K, and half of the Lacross team walk through the door. I give Theo a raised brow as if to ask what he could have done to earn himself detention but he just walks past my desk deliberately pushing my pencil case on to the floor on his way. "Dick," I mutter not caring is Mr Grayson can hear.

"Harri," Erik with a K says with a slight nod as he walks past my desk.

"Rob," I say nodding back. Resisting the urge to call him Erik with a K.

Following Erik with a K, is Jamison. Possibly the most popular guy in our school, save for Theo. The dick.

I've always had a thing for Jamison, along with every other girl in the school. I never dared tell Jazz about it. I mean, can you blame me? She'd never let me live it down. Plus he's way out of my league.

I watch as Jamison walks, no scratch that, saunters, past my desk. His long loose brown hair bouncing like he is in a shampoo commercial with every step that he takes like he's walking in slow motion.

His navy t-shirt clings in all the right places of his thick wide frame just enough that you can see the outline of his pecks but not enough that is looks like he is wearing a tank top. His jeans are perfectly cuffed too, showing off his muscly legs and perfectly laced black boots.

The waft of Tommy cologne assaults my senses as his aura hits my nostrils, as does the rough, gravely huskiness of his voice as he copies the boys ahead of him, acknowledging my presence with a simple nod and an uttering of my name, "Harri."

I'm so lost in the moment that it is not until I feel Jazz's leg smash against mine that I avert my gaze from Jamison's back as he takes a seat on the other side of the room and look back towards the door.

"Close your mouth, you're drooling, Harlow," Cleo scowls as closes the door behind her.

I should keep my mouth shut. I don't really know what comes over me. I guess I'm starting to care a little less about Cleo and her girl gang with every passing day, and it is showing.

"Like you can talk. I'm not the one chasing after some guy who has made it clear he isn't interested," I hiss, gesturing towards Theo who is slouched in his seat twirling a pen with his fingers. Dick.

"No, you're just the one checking out guys when you already have a boyfriend," she remarks, sitting down at the desk in front of me with a satisfied grin on her face.

I look to Jazz for support but she's too busy texting Jackson to have an even noticed what just went down. I return the leg bump to get her attention, which works but only enough for her to look at me with a ridiculously happy expression like I just told her we were getting ice cream on the way home. "Seriously Harri. I think I love him," she declares as if I had asked.

Mr Grayson taps his desk with a ruler. "ENOUGH! Phones away. Face the front."

The room falls silent as Jazz passes me a note. "What did they do?" I look up as she points to Theo, Erik with a K, Jamison and a few others.

I shrug my shoulders. I had considered apologizing to Theo for last night but I've since changed my mind. Now just the sight of him sitting there like he owns the place is getting me worked up. To distract myself I start scribbling on my notepad.

No more than a few minutes go by before there is a knock at the room. Mr Grayson takes a few steps towards the door before angrily asking the student why they dared disturb his class. I can't hear everything but hear  enough to work out that the student that is doing compulsory administrative duties for the Principle and has been asked to deliver some packages that were delivered to the office earlier. Mr Grayson argues with the student briefly before opening the door and allowing the student to enter.

As the boy pushes the trolley through the door there is an audible gasp from the room, and understandably so. On the trolley is a very large teddy and a massive bunch of rainbow coloured roses.

"Who did you impress, Sir?" Theo asks with a cheeky grin as the boy places the items on Grayson's desk.

Mr Grayson puts on his glasses and reads two notes attached to the gifts before looking at Theo from over the top of his glasses. "As much as I would  like to think I have left a lasting mark on someone Mr Harlow, I am not the recipient of these... these... gifts."

"I'm shocked, Sir. I mean you're so personable," Theo taunts, earning a chuckle from the boys. "I mean clearly whoever sent these is trying to make a good impression."

It takes all my strength not to groan out loud. He really is a dick sometimes.

Ignoring Theo, Jazz slides me a note while Grayson continues his conversation with the boys. "No surprises who they're for," she writes nodding in Cleo's direction.

Grayson walks back to the table and picks up the teddy. It is so big he uses both hands to hold it. He turns and heads towards Cleo who straightens up in her chair in expectation. "Well, Theo. Funny you should mention good impressions because it seems that is something that at least one person in the Harlow household is capable of this."

To my dismay he walks straight past the expectant Cleo, sitting the teddy on my desk. I am pretty sure you could actually hear the sound of my jaw dropping open, along with everyone else in the room.

I am about to explain that he must have the wrong person when Grayson pushes the teddy to the side revealing my face and hands me the note.

"A dream is not reality, but who is to say which is which- the mad hatter.

Lucky for me you are a reality. Thank you for a wonderful night on Saturday. SJ xx"

I read the note a few more times before Jazz snatches it from my hand, almost tearing it. I can just about hear her singing, "ah young love," but instead she grabs me by the arm, and smiles whispering, "he's too much, H," tearfully in my ear.

He's not the only one who is too much, I think shaking my head  as I watch her dab away the happy tears from her eyes.

"Look out Harlow, looks like your sister has a boyfriend," one of the boys calls out, earning himself a stern look from both Theo and Erik with a K who do not seem impressed.

"Is this the young fellow with the Mustang?" Grayson asks as he makes his way back to his desk.

"Mustang?" Jamison repeats his eyes wide with excitement like someone just said the magic word.

Grayson nods with a smile, "yes, Jamison. Red. Very clean. One of the cleanest I've seen."

I honestly do not understand the whole guys and cars thing. Ignoring the conversation I run my hand over the soft dark brown fur of the bear, before placing it on the floor by my feet. The thing is huge. It must be nearing a metre tall. I am not even sure I how I will be able to get it home.

A moment laterGrayson picks up the colourful roses and walks back in my direction.

"Seriously, the flowers too?" Erik with a K mutters, with a shake of his head.

"Respect the guy, he drives a 'Stang," Jamison instructs Erik with a K, who seemingly falls back in line at being given his orders.

"And these," Grayson says placing the flowers on Jazz's desk, 'are for you."

Her face just about explodes. "Oh my god, I love him!" she exclaims not caring who hears.

Theo instantly puts his head down, refusing to look in our direction. I feel a twinge of remorse for him. I mean clearly he likes Jazz, but he's still a dick. And would I like to see them together? No.

Do I prefer Jackson? Of course.

But still, I feel sorry for him. I make a mental note to be nice to him tonight. Well... as long as he is nice to me.

Grayson hands the note to Jazz, with a smirk. Her eyes skim over the words before she burst out laughing.

"What?" I ask surprised by her reaction. She hands me the note.

"For the girl who looks like a rainbow and likes to stop and smell the roses:

Jazz apples are red, Shiitake mushrooms are brown,

I suck at writing poems, Can I rhyme that with ass clown?"

I can't help but laugh too. Honestly, these two deserve each other. I hand the note back to Jazz who is still smiling like an idiot, running her fingers over the petals inspecting each colour of the rainbow computed flowers.

I turn to face the front just as Cleo turns around in her seat flicking her hair over my desk. "Can we get back to detention now, Sir?" she asks annoyed. A small part of me hopes that she is jealous.

Jamison holds his arm up, "I'd rather talk about the Mustang if you're taking suggestions, Sir?"

"Put your hand down, Jamison. While that is a topic I would love to discuss we are here because you and the team thought it would be funny to put bubble bath in the memorial fountain."

"To be fair it was pretty funny, Sir," he answers back with a smirk.

Grayson places his hands on his hips. "Not to the poor groundsmen who've spent the last three days cleaning it up!"

Theo slouches further down in his seat, pulling his arm all the way inside his sleeve and using it to block his face. I bet he thinks I am going to tell Mum and Dad on him. He is probably too stupid to work that since I am also in detention he probably has dirt on me too. Not that I am going to tell him that.

The rest of detention goes without incident, except for Cleo deliberately kicking the teddy which sat at my feet while making her way out of the room.

"Thanks for the teddy, SJ. Such a nice surprise. I love it xx." I text as soon as we are released.

"Something to hug, when I am not there."

"So you are saying I shouldn't hug Erik with a K, then?"

"No! I mean the teddy is there 'fur' your protection. haha"

"SJ, didn't we talk about the Dad jokes already?"

"No. No. I don't believe the topic has ever come up."

"I think it might have, once or twice."

"Are you in a 'grizzly' mood. lol"

"SJaayyyyyy."

"Yes?"

"Thank you. xx"

"My pleasure. My Queen."

Author's note:

Okay, beautiful people. How are you all?

Long chapter, huh? I could have kept writing but it might already be a record and I do have to sleep now. But truthfully I love writing these guys.

Anyway thoughts on this chapter? Do you feel sorry for Theo at all? What about Erik with a K (he seems pretty hurt about the whole SJ thing)?

Thoughts on Jamison? and are we still finding Mr Grayon creepy?

Oh and new question, what was your favourite bit of this chapter? and least fav?
