Chapter 50 You Actually Have Feelings for Her, Right?
Diane was sure of itâsheâd made sure that the cup was in Queenieâs hand before she let go of it.
However, the cup had toppled over nonetheless, spilling the piping hot milk all over the sheets.
Meanwhile, Queenieâs hand seemed to be scalded by the heat as well, for she clutched her hand as her face scrunched up in a grimace.
âWhatâs with you? Why canât you even hold a cup properly?â
Christopherâs sudden complaint came as a shock to Diane, and she shuddered slightly. She turned toward him in an instant, but his attention was already on Queenie as he stood up and swiftly tore away the blanket which was now drenched in milk.
âHowâs your hand? Does it hurt?â
âIâm fine.â
Queenie shook her head and said, âItâs nothingâitâs just a little splash. Itâs not Dianeâs fault.â
Christopher held her hand and carefully observed the scalded areas before turning back to Diane.
His expression was cold, and she wanted nothing more than to look away.
âIâll get the doctor to take a look at Miss Hayworthâs injury,â said Diane hastily. Then, she turned around and left the ward in a hurry without waiting for their response.
After walking for quite a distance, she finally started to calm down from her nervousness. She took a deep breath and headed to the doctorâs office when someone called out from behindâthe voice was cold and demanding.
âStop right there.â
She had always been an independent person, so she didn't feel the need to comply with anyoneâs command.
However, that particular voice had the power to make her instinctively stop short in her tracks.
Diane didnât turn around, but she could feel his intimidating presence approaching.
âWhy did you spill the milk earlier?â
Christopherâs mind seemed to be set on the matter; he came up to her and questioned her directly.
However, judging from the way he had asked⦠Does he think that I did it on purpose?
âMr. Wayne.â
Diane finally looked behind. She raised her head and stared straight at Christopherâs unblinking gaze without the intention to avoid the subject. At that moment, her almond eyes were firm and filled with determination.
âIf I was planning to spill it on purpose, firstlyâI wouldnât have done it right under your nose. Secondly, I would have splashed it directly onto her face, not all over the blanket where it wouldnât injure her at all.â
Her breaths were slightly rushed and she was trying her best to hide the fact that she was nervous.
Nevertheless, the flush that crept up her face as she spoke had completely betrayed her intentions.
Christopher lowered his gaze and caught the faint redness on her face. Soon enough, his eyes darkened considerably with realization.
âYouâre saying it was an accident, right? If thatâs the case, why are you nervous? Why are you panicking?â
He caught her wrist and gripped it tight before he pulled her close with a yank, stunning Diane briefly.
Meanwhile, his breaths became harsher as he narrowed the distance between them.
âW-Whatâs there to panic about? Please donât jump to conclusions, Mr. Wayne.â
âMe? Jumping to conclusions? If it was an accident and youâre not panicking, then what is it? Are you mentally retarded? Is that why you canât even hold a cup properly?â
The vicious insults which she was all too familiar with escaped his lips. Diane was rendered speechless by his snappy arguments, and she couldnât help but glare at him sharply.
âYouâre the one whoâs mentally retarded. Whatever it is, youâre wrong. Let me goâIâll go and get a doctor. After all, I canât afford to have your baby girl hurt her hand, so please let me go, Mr. Wayne.â
Diane flung away his hand and bolted like she was running for her life.
Christopher stood on the spot as he watched the leaving womanâs petite figure. The mocking smirk on his face faded away and he pursed his lips as a hint of curiosity surfaced in his eyes.
When he turned around, he noticed a frail figure by the door to the ward. Christopher immediately quickened his steps toward her.
âWhy did you get up?â
He frowned with faint displeasure in his eyes. Queenie was leaning against the door as she glanced at where Diane had run off to. Then, she slowly turned to look at Christopher again. Bearing her dull complexion and pale lips, she smiled weakly at Christopher and said, âYou actually have feelings for her deep inside, right?â
âThereâs no such thing,â Christopher replied almost immediately as his frown deepened momentarily.
Then, he put an arm around Queenieâs and helped her inside.
Although he was looking elsewhere, Queenie's gaze was fixed on his face.
âYou know, Christopher, Iâm not hoping that youâll stay with me forever. You know Iâ¦â
She paused, and the smile on her face took a melancholic turn. Queenie then continued, âTo be frank, Iâm happy just to be able to see you. I know anything more than that is too far out of reach now.â
Queenie spoke softly with a certain gentleness which sounded as though she was on the verge of tears âit was painful to hear indeed.
âDonât say thatâthereâs still time, so youâll be fine.â
âAre you sure thereâs still time?â
Queenie stopped walking and looked up at Christopher. On the other hand, he returned her gaze. After a long while, he finally nodded and said, âOf course there is.â
âChristopherâ¦â
Queenie breathed softly as she gently leaned forward and placed her head against his chest; she then wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tightly.
At that moment, she was immersed in her happiness. However, within seconds, she realized that the manâs body had visibly stiffened in her embrace.
The tenderness in her gaze darkened and she pursed her lips without loosening her hold around the man. Instead, she reached her arms further and hugged the man tighter before she said in a whisper, âDo you know, Christopher? My hopes were completely shattered when I first arrived in Australia. For the longest time, I missed you so muchâI thought about you day and night, and I couldnât sleep at all.
After some time, my mom told me that if I kept doing this to myself, I would torture myself to death before I even get to see you. I was so scared, Christopher; were you ever aware of that? I was so scared that I wouldnât see you again.â
Queenieâs trembling voice echoed in the room as she choked back her tears. Christopher clenched his fists before he eventually raised his arms and gently wrapped them around the womanâs body.
âYou shouldâve told me the truth earlier.â
âI couldnât tell you, Christopher. I was really scaredâ¦â
Queenie buried her head in his chest and kept on repeating the fact that she was afraid.
Christopher looked up from her, and his gaze shifted toward the floor-to-ceiling windows in front of him âit was now dark outside.
After a long moment, he let out a sigh so soft that it was barely audible.
âEverythingâs fine now, and itâs all in the past.â
Then, he pressed his lips together and didnât say another word. His eyes were still on the glass window; his heart grew heavier as he stared at the night sky.
Queenie finally raised her head after a while, and she slowly pulled away from Christopherâs arms.
Her face was stained with streaks of tearsâshe looked nothing like the strong-willed woman she usually was. The look in her eyes as she looked up at him even had a sense of misery to it.
âChristopher, if you have feelings for Diane, you should go for herâI wonât stop you. I just hope youâll be happy with her. After all, this is already more than enough for me.â
âHow could you say something like that? Nothing is going on between me and her.â
Christopher frowned as he recalled the moment when Diane ran away in a hurry. Just then, an odd feeling rose to his chest.
âAll right, thatâs enough. Go and lie down on the bed; the doctor said that you canât stand up for too long.â
Queenie looked toward Christopher as her vision was still blurry with tears. She wanted to say something else, but she swallowed her words after some thought. She nodded and simply said, âOkay.â
Then, she turned around and lowered her head as she buried the doubts in her heart.
