Chapter 38 So What if Iâm Interested in Him?
Right now, Christopher was still holding Dianeâs hand. Emiliaâs words had put Diane in a difficult position and she didnât know how to respond.
Her marriage with Christopher wasnât meant to be made public to begin withânot unless it was the last resort.
In fact, she wanted nothing more than to hide it from her family at that moment.
Thus, sheâd rather keep quiet and see how Christopher would answer her sister.
âIâve said it beforeâshe belongs to me.â
As soon as the words left his mouth, Diane shot him a glance; he didnât reveal nor deny the fact that she was his wife.
Even though she was satisfied with his ambiguous response, an inexplicable uneasiness surfaced in her chest.
âShe belongs to you? W-What does that mean?â Maria was quick to follow up. Meanwhile, George stared fixedly at the two of them as well. Without waiting for Christopher to reply, George said all of a sudden, âNo, you two canât be together.â
Diane jolted momentarily whereas Christopherâs expression dulled instantly. He replied, âIâm afraid you donât have the right to decide what I do with my personal life.â
His words were harsh and blunt, so Diane felt quite bad for her parents. As a result, she frowned in slight dissatisfaction.
George was overcome with awkwardness; even so, there wasnât a hint of frustration on his face.
Instead, he was very cautious with his choice of wordsâjust like how he was when he used to serve the Wayne Family as a housekeeper 20 years ago. He said carefully, âIâm not trying to decide your life for you, Young Master Wayne. However, we⦠y-you see, weâre far too different from you. Diane isnât suited to be together with you; youâre the Young Master while sheâsâ¦â
âI know very well who she is,â said Christopher, his voice cold as ice. His single sentence was enough to render George speechless, and the middle-aged manâs face paled immediately.
Mariaâs eyes were fixed on Christopher the whole time. After some time, she finally broke her silence and hissed at George all of a sudden. She said, âAre you crazy? How can you talk to Young Master Wayne like that? Youâre in no place to tell him how to live his life! Um⦠j-just get together if itâs your wishâitâs fine as long as Dianeâs happy. At any rate, youâre a much better man than Norman.â
Maria then forced a smile and chuckled stiffly, but it earned a sharp glare from George. He seemed to have something to say, but Maria stopped him with a grip on his arm. âAll right, stop it. Letâs not spoil the mood.â
George kept his opinions to himself in the end, but he still looked extremely discontented.
Meanwhile, Diane felt that the looks on her parentsâ faces were quite odd indeed.
Nevertheless, she couldnât tell what exactly was strange about their reaction. Just as she was lost in thought, Christopher spoke again.
âAfter what happened today, I donât think itâll be safe for you all to stay here. Iâll arrange somewhere safer for you guys to stay. If you need anything in the future, just let me knowâthereâs no need to look for Diane.â
Diane instantly returned to her senses at the sound of his words, and she looked up at the man in a daze.
Is he helping me to take care of my family?
At that moment, a warm feeling rushed up her chest and she was about to say something when Maria beat her to it with a laugh. âThatâs great. Iâve always known that youâre a nostalgic person, Young Master Wayneâyou treat Diane so well, and youâre even taking care of our family. Thank you, Young Master Wayne.â
âThereâs no need to thank me.â
Christopher was indifferent and cold toward Mariaâs earnest attitude. As Diane looked at her mother, she felt that behind her huge grin was an immense hunger for profit.
Mariaâs blatant butter-up made Diane uncomfortable to watch; she was afraid that her family would continue to leech off Christopher with more outrageous requests. With that in mind, she said, âSince Christopher had offered, you guys should pack up, Mom and Dad. Well then, Iâll be leaving with him first.â
Then, she gave Christopherâs hand a tug and turned around; he didnât object and followed suit.
To her surprise, Emilia quickly ran up to the two of them and blocked their way at the door.
âWhatâs the rush, Diane? Iâm not done yet.â
âWhat do you want now?â
Diane frowned at her sister. However, Emilia paid her no mind; she stared straight at Christopher innocently and put on a sweet smile.
âChristopherâcan I call you that? Youâre considered my brother-in-law now, right? Since youâre the president of Evergreen Incorporated, canât you hire me as an employee? Iâm not asking for muchâa secretary position is good enough. Itâs hard to find a job these days and Iâll never be able to get accepted in such a huge corporation like Evergreen. Since this is a piece of cake for you, youâll help me out, right? Come on, think about my sister!â
âEmilia.â
Dianeâs face fell as she warned her sister angrily and said, âYouâve gone too far. Every company has their own rules and regulations for hiring employees. Just send in your resume and follow the procedures if youâre interested. Donât try to cheat your way in.â
âHow is this considered cheating? Christopher is the president of Evergreen; they have tens of thousands of employees and positions. What difference would it make if they just hire another one?
Youâre the one whoâs gone too far, Diane.â
Emilia had been spoiled since young, so sheâd put on a pouty face whenever she was unhappy.
Meanwhile, Diane was at her witsâ end; she took a look at Christopher and realized that he was staring at her too.
His face was unreadable, and so were his deep-set eyes.
Since his stoic demeanor wasnât giving away his thoughts, Diane could only stick to her own. âDonât think too much of it. Sheâ¦â
Before she could finish, Christopher interrupted and said, âSheâs right. Itâs a piece of cake.â
He then turned to Emilia and said, âReport to HR tomorrow. Tell them itâs on me.â
âAll right. Thanks, Christopher.â
Emilia broke into a bright grin at once, her eyes gleaming with appreciation for Christopher.
âLetâs go.â
With that, Christopher held Dianeâs hand without another word as they left the apartment building together.
âSafe trip, Christopher!â
Emilia shouted farewells excitedly by the gate. Behind her, George scowled at Maria angrily.
âAre you insane? How could you agree to their relationship?â
âWhatâs the problem? Just let them be with each other if they want toâthereâs nothing wrong with that,â
Maria replied matter-of-factly.
George fixed his gaze on Maria; he was silent for a few moments before he said, âI never thought that youâd be even more cold-hearted than me, Maria. How could you put the two of them together? You should knowâ¦â
âWhat are you trying to say? Iâve suffered enough after being stuck with a gambling addict like you for so many years. If thereâs one thing I know, itâs the horrible financial state of our family right now!
Besides, Christopher is richâheâs filthy rich. Why are you acting so humble, George? How can you afford to act humble after youâve gambled away our whole family?â Maria argued in disdain. George didnât have the words to counter her attacks, and he suddenly raised his arm at her.
Maria didnât dodge and simply glared back at him provokingly, whereas George stopped short in his tracks; eventually, he put down his arm without landing the hit.
âIâm not going to argue with you. Just be careful what you wish for, and donât blame me for what happens if she stirs up any trouble with the Waynes.â
âWhatâs wrong with the Waynes? Youâre too naive, George. Theyâre just in a relationshipâthereâs nothing serious going on between them. Do you think theyâd actually get married and have kids?
Youâve overestimated yourself. Donât forget that sheâs your daughter, Georgeâdo you really think that the Wayne Family would accept her as their daughter-in-law? Pfft, in your dreams.â Mariaâs face was filled with scorn as she mocked her husband. Just then, Emilia added from the side and said, âExactly.
From what I see, things wonât end well between them. My sister canât be a good match for a man like Christopher! Theyâll break up very soon for sure.â
Emiliaâs eyes gleamed dreamily as she spoke. Maria took a lot at her daughter before she jolted in surprise.
âYou little b*tchâdonât tell me youâre interested in Christopher too?â
Georgeâs eyes shifted to Emilia as well. At the same time, a slight frown appeared on his forehead.
âWhat if I am? Is it unusual to be interested in a man like him?â Emilia snapped back matter-of-factly.
While ignoring her parentâs wide-eyed stares, she turned around and pranced over to her room.
