Chapter 31 Really Have No Idea Queenie Hayworthâs exquisite features froze for an instant before her red lips curled into a smile. âIâm just caring about you.â
âThanks, but I donât need it.â Christopher had a smile on his face, but his deep eyes were like two ice pools with a chilling glint and zero warmth in them.
Queenie fell silent and lowered her eyes for a moment before the faint smile on her face slowly faded.
âChris, even though Iâm back this time for the collaboration with Cavernstar Group, I actuallyââ
Before she could finish her sentence, Christopherâs cell phone rang on the table. Queenie stopped speaking as Christopher picked up his cell phone. It wasnât until she saw a sudden change in his countenance several seconds later did she ask, âWhatâs wrong? What happened?â
Instead of answering her question, Christopher merely shot her a glance and got up. âI have something else to attend to, so Iâll be leaving first. Congratulations on becoming Evergreen Incorporatedâs public relations director.â His congratulatory remark sounded as frosty and emotionless as his eyes.
âChristopher.â Queenie stood up, but Christopher had already picked up his jacket and left his seat. âIf you want to discuss work-related matters with me, it wonât make a difference to do so in the company tomorrow,â he said. Then, he turned around and hurried off.
Queenie stood in place while staring at him from behind. She mumbled, âI came back for you, actually.â
On the other hand, Christopher made a few phone calls as soon as he left the cafe. Then, he sped all the way to his company.
The eyes of Evergreen Incorporatedâs security guards bulged out of their sockets when they saw Christopher hurrying into the building at such a late hour. Before they could figure out what was going on, Scott also rushed inside anxiously.
A few minutes later, Scottâwho didnât even have time to catch his breathâpanted in the presidentâs office and said, âMr. Wayne, I have asked Mr. Waddington to look into it at NG Enterprise, but there isnât a reply yet. Those in the company have clocked off at such a late hour, so itâll probably take some time.â
Christopher stood in front of his desk with his hands clenched into fists. Upon hearing Scottâs words, he smashed a fist forcefully against the hard surface of the desk. âDamn it!â He gave off a frightening aura as he stood there, his face livid.
This was Scottâs first time seeing Christopher in such a furious state ever since he began working for the latter. As he didnât dare to speak thoughtlessly, he fell silent for a while. He then advised, âYou donât have to be too worried. Since the person is demanding a ransom from you, Mrs. Wayne must be fine.â
Upon hearing Scottâs words, Christopher darted a chilling look at him. He merely told Scott that Diane had been kidnapped without showing him the photo on his cell phone. What does Scott even know? he thought to himself. âIs there any news from the bank yet?â
âNo, not yet.â A cold sweat broke out on Scottâs forehead.
Christopherâs brow furrowed even more. He then ordered in a cold voice, âUrge them again.â
âYes, Mr. Wayne.â It was off-duty hours, but now that there was an emergency, Scott could only do so.
As soon as he finished making the phone call, he received an incoming call. After he ended the phone call, he said to Christopher, âMr. Wayne, the telecommunications company just called to say that this phone number is a temporary number that isnât registered to anyone. However, theyâve found some information about the last person Mrs. Wayne contacted.â
âWho is it?â Christopherâs eyes lit up.
Scott promptly answered, âItâs Emilia Cornell, her younger sister.â
âFind out Emiliaâs phone number for me,â Christopher ordered.
Since he didnât dare to keep Christopher waiting any longer, Scott immediately made the phone call.
As Scott was busy talking over the phone, Christopherâs cell phone rang. He picked it up and saw that it was a call from Xavier. After he finished answering the call, he put away his cell phone and asked directly, âDo you know where the Cornell Residence is?â
âItâs listed in the document.â After all, they had investigated the Cornell Familyâs recent situation previously.
âJust go to Cornell Residence directly. According to Xavier, some of NG Enterpriseâs employees said that Diane went to meet Emilia after clocking off,â Christopher said before leaving the office without another word. When he reached the ground floor, he suddenly looked at Scott. âTell the Finance Department to stand by tonight and get the money ready.â
Scott was stunned for a moment before he asked in surprise, âYouâre talking about 50 million, Mr.
Wayne. Moreover, the bank account that the person has provided is an offshore account. Iâm afraid itâll be difficult to recover the money if you really have it transferred.â
Upon hearing this, Christopher, who had been walking non-stop in a rush, suddenly stopped dead in his tracks. âIn that case, what do you think we should do? Should we leave her alone?â
Scott was speechless as another layer of cold sweat covered his forehead. He thought to himself, I didnât mean that. I⦠Wait a minute. Why would my boss seem to be at a loss? Why would he take nothing into consideration just to save Mrs. Wayne?
However, Christopher had turned around and left after throwing him an angry glance. Not daring to say anything else, he could only obey Christopherâs orders and called the Finance Department promptly.
Itâs already well into the night, and we can only transfer the money tomorrow morning. Letâs hope that Mrs. Wayne can be found tonight.
No one knew how many red lights the Rolls-Royce Phantom jumped as it sped along the road. The journey from Evergreen Incorporatedâs building to the Cornell Residence shouldâve taken more than an hour, but it took only half an hour for them to arrive.
After knocking on the door of the Cornell Residence, Christopher shoved Maria out of the way and burst inside, scaring her out of her wits. âW-What are you doing?â
Christopher didnât bother talking to her, though. He simply yelled in the house, âEmilia!â
Upon hearing his call, Emilia, who had been lying in bed, hurriedly ran out of her room. However, the instant she saw Christopher, she was totally stunned. Who is this outstandingly handsome guy? Is he coming for me? she thought to herself. People always judged someone by their looks, so she didnât think that Christopher was a bad person despite the anger all over his face. Dressed in her pajamas, she walked directly up to him without a qualm. âWho are you? Are you looking for me?â
At this moment, Maria had recovered from the initial fright and was staring at Christopherâs face. After doing so for a while, she suddenly exclaimed, âAre you Young Master Wayne?â Indeed, she had forgotten his face a little after so many years, but she could still recognize him if she looked closely.
Meanwhile, Christopher continued to ignore Maria. He merely stared at Emilia and asked in a cold and serious tone, âWas Diane together with you this evening? What happened afterward? Where did she go?â
âHuh?â Emilia was dumbfounded for a moment before she stared at Christopher with slight disappointment in her eyes. âSo you arenât coming for me.â
âIâm asking you where Diane is.â Suddenly, Christopher stretched out his hands, clutched Emiliaâs collar, and dragged her up close to him.
Emilia was startled by this and she turned as white as a sheet. âYouâre asking me about my sister.
Whatâs your relationship with her?â
âIâm asking you where Diane is!â Christopher was so mad that he almost went insane.
Even Scott was impatient. âMiss Cornell, where have you been with your sister this evening? Hurry up and tell us! Stop wasting our time.â
âWhat happened to Diane?â Maria asked.
Christopher let out a cold snort and shook Emilia off before he stared at her.
Emilia looked at him. After some thought, she answered, âHasnât my sister gone back yet? No, that canât be right. We didnât do anythingâwe just had dinner together, during which I asked her to help me look for a job opportunity.â
âWhere did you two have dinner?â asked Christopher. Once he found out where Diane was last seen, he would be able to find her whereabouts using the surveillance cameras.
âWe had dinner atâ¦â Emilia thought for a moment. âWe had dinner at a French restaurant located below her company. I came back right after dinner.â Judging by the look on this guyâs face, he probably couldnât reach Diane. Did something happen to her? That canât be possible, right? she thought to herself.
Emilia was unsettled, but she didnât dare to tell the truth. Diane was angry in the first place when she helped Norman ask her out, and sheâd definitely be in trouble if Norman really did do something to Diane. Since the guy before her eyes didnât seem like a guy to be trifled with, she felt that it was better not to get herself into trouble by admitting to what she had done. What if something really happened to Diane, though? No, no, no, that wonât be the case. Theyâre a divorced couple, so itâs not a big deal even if they have sex. What else could possibly happen?
At the thought of this, Emilia put her mind at rest and said with more certainty, âWe had dinner at the French restaurant. We parted ways after dinner, so I really have no idea where she went.â
