Chapter 24 The Wicked Mother-in-Law Arrives Stella made this phone call for the purpose of asking Norman to come to the branch office in his capacity as a director of NG Enterprise to back her up. Even if she couldnât touch Diane, she could at least teach Maureen a good lesson to let these thoughtless subordinates know she wasnât someone to be trifled with. This way, they would behave themselves in the future.
However, before she could withdraw her warning gaze, the news that she suddenly heard over the phone hit her like a thunderbolt. âWhat? What did you say?â she asked in disbelief with a sudden change in her countenance regardless of the numerous onlooking colleagues.
The onlookers couldnât make out what was said over the phone, but Maureen let out a sneer and cast her eyes over everyoneâs faces. âIâm right, ainât I? The headquarters must have issued the notice by now. Now that heâs no longer a director, who is she trying to scare?â she said with a disdainful snort before sitting down.
On the other hand, Stella hung up the phone. âItâs you! Youâre the one pulling tricks behind my back, Diane!â Her eyes popped in anger and resentment.
Diane kept her countenance, but she understood deep down what Stella meant. She merely replied flatly, âI said I would have Norman thrown out of that position within a month. It seems I have thought too highly of him.â
Truth be told, Diane had blurted that out on a whim back thenâshe wasnât confident of doing that at all.
Therefore, she was also shocked to learn on this day that Norman had been removed from his position.
However, she didnât give her feelings of shock away since she would like to see how Stella would smooth this dayâs matter over.
As their colleaguesâ discussions grew louder, their remarks became increasingly explicit and offensive.
Now that Norman had been removed from his post, how long could Stella stay in her position? In other words, they didnât have to be afraid of her anymore.
Stella stood frozen in front of Dianeâs desk. She then grabbed a folder from the desk, raised it up, and hurled it at Dianeâs head. âItâs all your fault!â
The folder rustled as it flew right at Dianeâs head. Luckily, Diane reacted quickly enough by tilting her head to one side. She managed to dodge the frontal assault, but the folder still hit her on the shoulder.
Just as she picked up the folder, she saw Mr. Weaving of the branch office coming in through the door.
Hence, she stood up.
Stella, who didnât see Mr. Weaving, pointed her finger at the tip of Dianeâs nose and swore, âDo you think youâre high and mighty because you managed to go to bed with Christopher? Nevertheless, youâre nothing but a mistressâyou even went to bed with Christopher before divorcing Norman. Does that make you any less disgraceful than I, Diane?â
âStella!â Mr. Weaving thundered coldly just then. Stella was startled by this, and she looked back with embarrassment written all over her face at the sight of Mr. Weaving.
Mr. Weaving reprimanded, âWhat are you talking about with that filthy mouth of yours? This is the office, so mind your image!â
âMr. Weaving, Iââ Stella tried to explain herself, but Mr. Weaving dismissed her impatiently with a wave of his hand. âYou donât have to say anything anymore. Just go to the Administration Department from today onward. Thereâs a vacancy for a photocopying clerk there.â
âWhat?â Stellaâs eyes were bulging out of their sockets. âFor what reason? Have I been demoted just because of a word from Diane? Who does she think she is? Sheâs but a mistress of Christopher Wayne. You canât do this, Mr. Weaving.â
âThis decision was made by the headquarters.â Mr. Weaving glared at Stella with a livid face. Then, he turned toward Diane.
âGood morning, Mr. Weaving,â Diane greeted.
Mr. Weaving immediately wore a smile on his face. âDiane, you really are too low-profile. Had Mr.
Waddington not told me about this, I wouldâve been still unaware of your relationship with Mr. Wayne.
Please forgive us for anything that you found unsatisfactory in the past, Mrs. Wayne.â
Mrs. Wayne? Everyone gave a gasp as Mr. Weavingâs words confirmed the rumor that Diane was indeed married to Christopher. Stellaâs face turned ghastly pale; even Diane herself was startled for a moment.
I never planned on disclosing this, though. Did Christopher tell them? she thought to herself. While she looked at Mr. Weavingâs wrinkled smiling face, she felt somewhat embarrassed; after forcing a smile in embarrassment, she replied at last, âThat would be an overstatement, Mr. Weaving. Iâm still an employee of NG Enterprise no matter what.â
Mr. Weaving nodded repeatedly before making several polite remarks. When he turned to face Stella, he pulled a long face again. âWhat are you waiting for? Pack up your stuff and report to the Administration Department immediately! Just get lost if you donât want to work here. Itâs so inappropriate to raise a racket in the office.â
âMr. Weavingââ Stella got anxious, but Mr. Weaving didnât bother paying any attention to her. Having greeted Diane, he left right away.
Meanwhile, the office was in an uproar as soon as he left. Everyone looked at Diane with envy, whereas Maureenâwhom Stella had dressed down just nowâcouldnât help mocking the latter. The farce went on for quite a while and wasnât over until Stella walked off in a huff.
It could be said that Diane never had a momentâs peace all day long because of such a shocking piece of news that day. Now that the previous rumors about her being a homewrecker were dispelled, everyone looked at her differently; it made her feel very embarrassed.
Indeed, she had asked Christopher to attend the banquet with the original intention of provoking Stella and Norman so that Stella would shut up in front of her and stop bringing up the subject of Normanâs promotion to planning director in the future. However, she didnât expect things to develop to the point where her marriage to Christopher was made public.
Thanks to the colleagues who came cozying up to her in various ways, her head was swimming that day. As a result, she had to work overtime after office hours to finish her work.
It was already late when Diane left the office. As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she heard someone arguing with the security guard at the entrance. Upon hearing the personâs voiceâwhich was shrill and high-pitched with a country accentâshe felt her scalp tingling. It was Elizabeth, her ex-
mother-in-law.
âThis is the office of a company, granny. You canât get inside as you please.â The security guard was still trying to stop Elizabeth, but she pressed in on him and yelled at the top of her voice, âWhy canât I get inside? Whatâs so magnificent about your company that Iâm not allowed to get inside? My son is one of the higher-ups here, so why wouldââ Before she could finish her sentence, though, she spotted Diane. Instantly, she turned around and swore at Diane, âDiane, you wicked little b*tch! Come over here!â
Since it was the only exit from the building, Diane had to go there even if she didnât want to. She walked toward the exit, but instead of heading toward Elizabethâs direction, she went straight to the revolving door.
However, Elizabeth was agile enough to run over and grab Diane before the latter could reach the door.
âDidnât you hear me when I called you?â
âWhat do you want?â Diane asked directly since she wasnât in the mood to waste her time talking to Elizabeth.
Elizabethâs aged face looked ferocious. âWhat do I want, you say? You made my son and daughter-in-
law lose their jobs! I didnât expect you to be so vicious, Diane.â
âYour son and daughter-in-law have simply been demoted. They havenât lost their jobs yet; they just have to start at the bottom,â Diane reminded her. âBesides, that is the companyâs decision, not mine.â
âCut that bullsh*t.â Elizabeth curled her lips. âWho doesnât know this is thanks to that lover of yours?
Heâs filthy rich, isnât he? Youâre so terrific, Dianeâyou little wh*re. Not only did you cuckold my son, you even had him fired from his job as a director. Iâm telling youâIâll never get this over with until you account for this!â Her eyes flickered as she spoke.
Her abuses struck a chill into Dianeâs heart. âHow do you want me to account for this?â
âJust pay for this. Isnât your lover very rich? You have to pay as much money as my son loses. My son would have earned several hundred thousand per year as a director, and he wouldâve made tens of millions after working for a few decades at the very least. Just give theââ
âHaha!â Diane sneered. âTo put it bluntly, you just want to extort money from me, donât you? Tens of millions? Do you think your son is worth that amount of money?â
âWhat do you mean? Are you looking down on Norman? You b*tch! How dare you be so arrogant after cheating on my son?!â With that, Elizabeth swung her arm and hit out at Dianeâs head.
