Lena gritted her teeth and sent Josefina a whopping 500k in a digital transfer. Not too much to make the elders frown, but not stingy either.
Hattie sat right there. That half a million was a real punch to Lenaâs gut.
When Josefina got the money, she raised an eyebrow, all smug and vibrant, making Lena bristling with irritation.
Just then, the butler came in, all respectful, and said, âMaâam, Mr. Brandon has arrived with Mr. Baldwin.â
After Oliverâs parents handed over the company reins, the couple took off to gallivant around the globe. Everyone in high society knew that. So the Mr. Baldwin the butler was referring to had to be the one and only.
Hearing about Oliverâs visit, Lena jumped up, all excited. âDid Oliver know Iâm back and came to see me especially?â Lenaâs face bloomed like a flower, shy and hopeful.
Hattie told the butler, âLet them in.â
The butler nodded, and soon Brandon and Oliver walked in. Their bodyguards lugged bags from high-end brands, one even shouldering a burlap sack. Joining them was Garrett, just back from work.
Hattie stood up to greet them, and they all exchanged pleasantries, settling on the couch.
Lenaâs eyes twinkled, glued to Oliver. âOliver, long time no see.â
Oliver glanced at Lena but didnât engage.
Lena was furious. True to form, Oliver still wasnât giving her the time of day.
Brandon chuckled looking at Josefina. âJosie, the main reason Oliver and I dropped by was to thank you for saving my life. If it hadnât been for you, I wouldâve probably bitten the dust.â
Josefina politely responded, âFortune favors the good, and youâre bound to live a long life.â
âThanks for the good vibes, Josie,â Brandon laughed heartily. His eyes were full of warmth as he looked at Josefina.
Lena stood there, dumbfounded. âYou know medical stuff too?â If that was the case, when Garrett and Hattie took Josefina to the hospital to visit grandma, was it for Josefina to treat her? Did Josefina figure out grandmaâs illness?
Lenaâs face turned even paler. She was restless in her seat.

Brandon answered Lenaâs question, recounting the story, âI collapsed at the roadside, and it was Josie who saved my life. Even my family doctor doesnât hold a candle to Josieâs skills.â
Oliver chimed in, âJosieâs medical skills are unmatched.â
Lena didnât know what to say. Oliverâs words were like a punch to her heart! She was a doctor too, not half-bad at it, so how come she couldnât hold a candle to Josefina, who came from a humble background?
Inside, Lena was seething with rage, but kept silent. With a gentle smile plastered on her face, she asked in a soft voice, âJosefina, who did you learn from?â
Josefina answered, âJust a country doctor.â
Lena breathed a sigh of relief. Josefina followed some country doc, so what good could come out of that? Surely nothing was worth mentioning!
Brandon beamed, âJosie, youâre too modest. I heard from the dean that you also know the Phoenix Touch. Even he canât do it. When he talks about you, itâs with nothing but admiration.â
Lenaâs heart, barely settled, was racing again. She blurted out, âBut isnât that the secret technique of the House of Adams, not taught to outsiders?
Youâre not a child of the House of Adams. How do you know it?â
Lena was flabbergasted. Just who was Josefina?
